There are many tips and tricks to overcoming smartphone addiction but none of them will be as effective as they can be without learning to make the distinction between searching and checking.

This distinction isn't a method of overcoming smartphone addiction, but rather the criteria by which all methods/tips/tricks should be judged vis a vis their effectiveness.

The distinction is simple. There are two very different ways that we use our smartphones. Sometimes we search and sometimes we check.

Searching is when you have a clear and specific purpose for using your phone.

Checking is when you open your phone because you are simply bored or want to be entertained.

Searching integrates your nondigital world with your digital one and helps you get things done.

Checking is escapist and trains our brains to crave novelty and distraction.

Learn to make this distinction and you can then select what other methods/tips/tricks are most suited to meet your needs. Fail to make this distinction and you could be wasting your time with apps and blockers.
