This is the inside of my Technics SL-D1. The SL-D(1,2,3) series were never a top of the line offering, but are still a solid turntable. The main problem with this series is that the plinth is made out of plastic. The table just does not have enough weight to properly absorb vibrations and isolate the platter/motor like their bigger brothers with solid metal and wood plinths.

I put 5 pounds of oil-based, non hardening modeling clay on the underside of the plinth to help combat this. (rainbow colors were cheaper...) I would say the sound has definitely tightened up after doing this. No more vibration/feedback from the motor or surrounding objects. It is also a lot less sensitive to footsteps. I live on the 2nd floor of a very old house with wood floors, so just walking by the table will often make it skip.

This is the clay I used if anyone is curious. It was the best deal I could find. No local stores had anything this cheap. http://www.amazon.com/Chenille-Kraft-4099-Modeling-Assortment/dp/B003E7FA9W/ref=sr_1_41?ie=UTF8&qid=1331779367&sr=8-41 You could do this to pretty much any "lower end" table and get positive results from it. I highly recommend this mod.

I have also replaced the audio output lines with higher quality cables from monoprice and replaced the ground cable with a heavier wire. With the mods I have done to this table, I think it easily stands up to much higher end and more expensive tables.
