Actually, I am talking about the revolution. :D

I highly recommend this book in particular: Cien Años de Confusción: La Construcción de la Narrativa que Legitimó al Régimen Autoritario del Siglo XX.

It's a great summary of the transition between a loose country of separate and unequal castes (españoles, mestizos, etc.) into a federal nation with a single unified identity based on the ancient Mexica tribe.

This happens after the Revolution in an attempt to forge a National Identity that the Independence from Spain was not able to give us.

Part of the book has a bit of a cynical tone to it, saying that this whole-cloth invention of an identity has been used a form of exploitation and oppression, but the historical descriptions are illuminating.
