OP - since you live in the Burbs, perhaps you should pick up this:

And maybe learn about all of the interesting things in the city. Maybe take your kids and make it an educational thing. Maybe plan a scavenger hunt for your kids across the city (if they're old enough).
This city has TONS of great things for all who want to experience it - they will not however be delivered to your door step or handed to you on a gold or silver platter.
Instead of describing what you don't like about the city - why dont you tell us what you enjoy doing? If you're into camping (which is about the only thing I can gather from this thread)- there are tons of great camping spots less than 2 hours from the city. What else are you into OP?
