It diffuses calming hormones into the air. We kept one in our bedroom (where the cats slept) and one in the living room (where we spent a lot of time hanging out), and it helps to keep them calm and mitigate fighting. They don't prevent fighting completely, but we did notice a reduction in their fighting. The animal center I volunteer at also uses them in their cat room.
