Hey everyone, I´m new to this subreddit but I know people here is nice, so a little back story, I've had the CM Devastator II combo since i built my PC (3 years ago), now I think it's time for an upgrade, i was looking for an affordable RGB mechanical keyboard but I'm a bit short on cash atm.

I really love the idea of visible switches, i would like a simple and minimalistic design and i don't really care if the lights are software or keyboard controlled.

I have a few options in mind:

Hi, in my opinion, just my own useless opinion, you could have settled for generic mouse and keyboard and use that to buy a more powerful videocard such as r7 250 or gtx 750. First, I assume you are a gamer because of the gaming keyboard stuff so a powerful video card is always better than a pseudo-gaming keyboard (I called them as lighting keyboard)

Upon checking, the keyboard is not even mechanical, thus not really a gaming keyboard. It's only for the "lights" and "feels". In my humble opinion, it's not worth to sacrifice a nice upgrade in gpu for this.

Personally, I would save up for some real powerful equipment, but this is a great placeholder until you can afford the real gaming peripherals (I'd go to Corsair for keyboards, and Razer, Logitech, or ASUS ROG for mice)

Keyboard is okay, but the mouse is great IMO.

I have this and it's not bad. For that price I think it would be hard to find a better option.

If you're planning on using this for gaming, do not buy it! The CPU and GPU will struggle to run much of anything, and 4GB of RAM will be the same. See the list below with comparisons to your parts.

G4560 vs i5 750 = http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Pentium-G4560-vs-Intel-Core-i5-750/3892vs2773 . The G4560 came out earlier this year and is the first non quad core chip to be able to handle modern games, I was playing The Witcher 3 on it yesterday (which is a very CPU demanding game) and it ran it very well. The 750 is just too old to be able to run much that has come out for the last several years at this point.

The 1050 TI is newer, has better compatibility with modern games, takes up less energy (saving you money back on your GPU), will have better warranty etc and just general lifespan from being bought as new and really is just flat out the better option. The same build I was playing The Witcher on (and tested a few other titles like Shadow of Mordor and Arkham Knight which are also very demanding for graphics) and I was able to get high settings at about 47-52fps (medium settings for the CPU stuff, high for the GPU stuff). You can also move up to a 470/570 GPU for about $240 or a 480/580 for about $280 more for even more performance if you wish. I would not recommend going for an RX 460/560 or the GTX 1050 (non TI) as both are likely to struggle on some games already, and even moreso in the very near future. It would be saving $20 today only to have to buy a whole new GPU porbably in a years time.

The link also does not seem to factor in that it is double the amount of RAM, the difference would likely be 3x as much rather than just 2x as DDR4 is newer and faster. These are not comparisons of the exact models, just showing a 4GB DDR3 stick vs an 8GB DDR4.

The PSU is a good, reliable unit from a known brand and is easily the best available under $40 (it's also on $20 discount so buy it asap as they only last very for a day or two usually... if not, the EVGA 100 400W model is the only other PSU under $40 worth considering - a bad PSU can destroy everything inside your case so never, ever got for a $20 no name model). Your system is also only 224W or half of the PSU's capability, meaning it will run really well and silently, and will give plenty of space for future upgrades without needing to get a new PSU.

The case was just the lowest cost one available - anything labelled 'ATX' or 'MATX' will do fine if you want something else. Just keeping the cost down.

Other notes: Any system at this cost will not come with on board wifi. An ethernet cable will work for internet connectivity, but if you want wireless you can just pick up a USB or PCI wifi adapter for probably $20 or less... if you plan on using a gamepad for gaming this one fine on mine - https://www.amazon.ca/Cooler-Master-Devastator-II-SGB-3030-KKMF1-US/dp/B01CDYAF28/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1496749283&sr=8-1&keywords=devastator+keyboard - and you can get a cheapo mouse/keyboard combo for around $10-15... if you plan on using the mouse/keyboard for gaming you can get a decent knockoff one on Amazon for $20-30 or an Xbox 360 one for $40... if you need a monitor (I use the TV/projector personally), you can probably get one for $80 or less on Kijiji/craigslist/ebay/etc (or a 28-32" 1080 TV screen, was living in Toronto for a while and that seemed the going rate on kijiji in the GTA)

if you can find out what monitor is included, that alone might be worth it (i wouldn't use any monitor less than 1080p personally). i doubt anything else in that PC is worthwhile, maybe the hard drive but even then. in any case, find out the specs of that PC if you can. as for mouse and keyboard, if you're on a budget this is a good idea

This is what I have currently.

2 buttons will be good, I don’t mind wireless unless it adds latency. Probably will like lighter mice more, as for hand grip not sure but I think it’s the most general kind.

So I tried switching the sticks around and did the memtest86. When I switched the sticks to A1/B1 they had the same performance as in A2/B2. Still 4 GB reserved, my mobo still says it's in single channel mode while CPU-Z says dual channel. When I used only one stick in A2 here's what task manager showed. Looks like the reserved memory dropped to 47.0 MB and the available memory is still 4 GB. And here is CPU-Z. So basically it looks like I'm getting the same performance with using one stick as with using two, correct? That seems like a problem.

I then did the memtest86 with the sticks in A2/B2. Here is the summary and here is the benchmark graph. The summary says my total physical memory is 4 GB, which appears to back up what I saw in task manager. Is my mobo not using both sticks? I don't know how to interpret the results of the graph.

Aside from what's in the list in the OP, I have this kbm and also a wired Xbox 360 controller that are regularly connected. It says 128 MB RAM are needed for the controller and I am unsure about the kbm.

How would I go about doing this stuff? Should I download the BIOS from their website?

Edit: I updated the BIOS to 3.40 but it still says the memory is in single-channel mode. The hardware reserved RAM is now at 4.1 GB.

I ordered this which has already arrived. I wanted to go cheap, at least to start with, and a friend of mine said his friend uses it and highly recommended it (however reliable that is).

Probably will get something nicer at some point, but I burnt all my budget on build so I ended up having to go budget on mouse and keyboard and monitor for the moment

Function vs Aesthetic
I really like how the vortex vibe looks, but I very often use the arrow keys, page up/down, and media keys (music play/pause, next song, etc) so something like the K70 is certainly appealing to me feature wise.

Not sure if you're aware but there's a CM Devastator II out. Don't really see any differences other then the keys are compatible with customizable key-caps and are supposed to feel more like a mechanical keyboard, but might be worth checking out and its only $5 more. I have the Devastator you posted above and have no issues with it other than the mouse wheel squeal which appears to be a common issue from the reviews I've read. Been too lazy to RMA it and it seems that the replacement would probably do the same thing. Might just open it up and try the fix I saw on youtube.

There is an updated version for a few dollars more here on amazon. It seems like it improves on the mouse which is an area of complaint on the first version.
