I have the version of this with no backlighting... but it sounds like you want that: Cooler Master Masterkeys Pro S

You’ll never get people to agree on here, but I really like this board. Cherry switches, solid heavy backplate, braided removable cable, simple clean aesthetic.

Edit: also, welcome!!!!

Great idea to have a hobby with your son!

  1. Coolermaster masterkeys Pro S RGB would probably be a good candidate for a first entry to the hobby. It is a pretty good quality board, and it has a standard layout, which means you can easily swap out keycaps without having to worry about special keysizes. It also has RGB, which i'm certain your son will find fun to play with as well. I just included a link to Amazon, but if you search a bit more i'm sure you could find a better deal.

  2. As for keycaps you have a lot of choices in every pricerange. If you are looking for something specific, i suggest /r/mechmarket. Almost always someone is willing to sell you what you are looking for, for a reasonable price.

Alternatively you could look at something like WASDkeyboards. They have a service, where you can make your own keyset, and have them make it. The quality is not the best, but i'm sure your son would appreciate being able to create something, and see his creation on his own keyboard.

As for higher end options, i'm not sure how relevant they are for you, but you can look into GMK and Signature Plastics keycaps, which are available through a ton of websites like www.originativeco.com, www.pimpmykeyboard.com, www.massdrop.com and the list goes on. If you want i can give you a ton of more links in a PM.

  3. Building a keyboard, is a good way to go deeper into the hobby, and i'm sure it would be a fun project. I suggest you take a good look at winkeyless' website. It's a store that sells keyboards in kit form, and they have pretty nice stuff. It's more expensive than a prebuilt like the Coolermaster, but that is just how it goes in this hobby.

As for building the board, that is a whole topic in it self, and i suggest you start with the first point in your post, and move on from there. Learning about everything is part of the experience IMO.

Hope the hobby brings you a ton of fun for you and your son. Also feel free to ask any question. There's a ton of people who would be happy to help. Including myself!

You can check out the Cooler Master Masterkeys Pro RGB series (full-size or TKL). Most people here would recommend those over Razer/Corsair/Logitech. You can also check out keyboards by Ducky or iKBC.

u/alose · 3 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

TKL is cheaper, takes up less desk space, and most importantly, provides better ergonomics. Full size keyboards induce either wrist strain or shoulder strain in right handed mouse users.

CM Masterkeys Pro S is a fantastic price right now. A Ganss GS87 is pretty nice and has PBT caps. A Ducky One TKL PBT is a solid choice.

Here is a timeline of the equipment I had in the past, during my B-line focus on funding my PC

May 2015: My first time getting a graphics card, which could run classic Doom extremely well, and allowed me to play Minecraft and some very light Skyrim, as shown

May 2016: My grandfather gave me his old Intel i3-550 PC and I got a used GTX 580 for $50. This is the first time I got to run some decent games. The Witcher 3 played at 30 fps on my 720 TV, which I captured footage of using FRAPS in August

December 2016: By then, a friend at work gave me his workstation PC, which had an FX-6200 in it. I slapped an RX 470 in the thing, replaced the CPU with an FX-8350, and had bought a bunch of new equipment, giving the old stuff to my roommate as shown. The monitor in the photo is actually my current tertiary display. This was also the first time I had premium peripherals: the G502 Spectrum and the CM MasterKeys Pro S. I went with a wireless headset: Turtle Beach Stealth 450

October 2017: Upgrade to the G910

January 2018: New secondary monitor, G440 mouse pad and G933 headset

May 2018: Best Buy had an open box PC and ultrawide monitor on sale. It's a Ryzen 5 system with an RX 580 in it. I also got a new keyboard, the G513. I had been struggling after being kicked out of my parent's house at this point, spending a couple months with my grandparents for food and shelter.

July 2018: Got my own place and mounted the old monitor

August 2018: Just style (and there's a G533 upgrade sneaking in the top-right corner)

September 2018: An old friend returns, looking sharper than ever

October 2018: Another ultrawide! 1440p this time

[some time in between]: I upgraded my GPU to the 1080Ti (used) and got a Ryzen 7 2700X just before getting my tax refund

February 2019: Glorious new speakers (G560)

March 2019: Rising desk!

May 2019: The mouse arrives and I mount my very first monitor next to my new ones

Recommended list is honestly pretty outdated.

Seems like what you want will be a TKL that has backlighting. Any idea on the switch choice? I'd suggest getting a switch tester / going to local stores with keyboards on display and trying them out to figure out what kind of switches you'd like the most.

As for the keyboard recommendations, you can go for something like a Ducky One TKL, Quickfire Rapid-i, VA87MR.

If you want RGB backlighting, then MasterKeys Pro S / Ducky One RGB(currently on preorder)

As for your list, the Ducky YOTG was a limited run item so it'll be hard to find now, the Das and Filco aren't backlit but both are decent options, and the WASD Code is somewhat expensive, so it'll only be worth it if you're looking for rarer switches like MX Greens / Clears.

If you want RGB, then go for a MasterKeys Pro S or Ducky One RGB

If you don't mind nonbacklit options then go for a Ducky One PBT, FC750R, Quickfire Rapid. The Ducky One PBT and FC750R come with stock PBT keycaps which will be more resistant to shine, and the Quickfire Rapid is really just a budget option I'm throwing in there because eh.

u/JorisBoers · 3 pointsr/pcmasterrace

Yes they did, a great one so far I have tried now. Here is the amazon page.

So far I am really liking it and just got around to playing with the firmware which is a very easy to use one so far :D

u/DyLaNzZpRo · 3 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

Here. Seemingly no software issues and doesn't look atrocious. Also has a standard bottom row, I don't know what the fuck Gskill were thinking when they made that bottom row.

u/omgitskae · 3 pointsr/buildapcsales

Look for 60% or 80% keyboards. 80% are also called TKL or Tenkeyless. A nice deal right now on an 80% is: https://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-MasterKeys-Mechanical-TenKeyless/dp/B01D8ETGNQ for RGB

or

https://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-MasterKeys-Tenkeyless-Mechanical/dp/B071W2697M/ for non RGB

Otherwise, 60% keyboards are pretty niche but you can find them on Massdrop regularly or mechanicalkeyboards.com for usually $10-20 more than Massdrop.

u/Dr_Potatoo · 2 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

This if you can wait for MIR.

u/ToonsAndCereal · 2 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

This is a beautiful RGB TKL board (uses KBT brown switches, which are solid MX Clones) https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=2018 Well-reviewed and great for the price.

I would also recommend Coolermaster S: https://www.amazon.com/MasterKeys-Mechanical-Keyboard-Intelligent-Switches/dp/B01D8ETGNQ

Ducky One RGB: https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=2032

u/Xathroz · 2 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

I have my eye on the CM MasterKeys Pro S as my first mechanical keyboard but I'm having second thoughts because:

  • I see some reports of bad QC.

  • The atypical bottom row. I don't know how much of an issue this is

Mainly because in the other thread people were saying brown switches were not that enjoyable and they would prefer MX clears instead. I've never tested any mech switch, and I heard reds are the way to go for gaming but brown was suggested often too. Is there an alternative that fits my needs? Gaming and browsing is pretty much all I do on this PC, I don't need to write long documents etc.

    I would like:

  • TKL for extra desk space/ mouse space

  • n-key rollover

  • RGB with individual key colors (or at least backlit)

  • budget €100-150

  • available in Europe

  • gaming oriented switches. I play mainly twitch games like MOBA and FPS, so every keystroke counts. I've lost team fights because my keypress wasn't registered. Reds/clears/browns? What do most people prefer?

Right now I'm using a Cherry model G86-22200 and I'm ready for the next step.

    Thanks :)
u/frank_n_bean · 2 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

The CM Quickfire Rapid is a TKL that has MX Browns, no backlighting, and fits into your budget, not to mention it being a very high quality board. Here's an Amazon link.

CM also makes a similar RGB board that's a bit newer, though I'm not sure if there's any actual PCB or controller improvements. The Masterkeys Pro S has the same functionality of the Rapid, though it's currently sold out on Amazon. They can usually be found around $100 if you'd prefer to wait for it to come back in stock.

u/MAGNIF1CNT · 2 pointsr/keyboards

Try to find a Cooler Master Masterkeys Pro S RGB. solid board with cherry MX switches and in your price range.

amazon link

u/turtle_with_dentures · 2 pointsr/MechanicalKeyboards

I'd recommend the Masterkeys Pro S. It comes in black, has cherry browns, available for $130 right now on Amazon with $30 in rebate form, so $100. You can set custom lighting, and it has software for it. Lighting effects demo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONP3sWerNLo. It also has OEM key sizing if you ever want to swap keycaps.

Note, I own the keyboard and I'm VERY happy with it.

Can I also ask why you looked at the Pro M if you're looking for a TKL keyboard? The Pro M has a 10 key, that's it's selling point over the Pro S.

Also in the process of looking it up I found that you can get the Pro M for $80 after rebate on Amazon, not $114 like you listed. At that price point I'd just pull the trigger and get the M.

edit: Sorry, some of pricing is off. Seems I was looking at the White LEDs and not the RGB.

edit2: Here's the link to Masterkeys Pro S RGB browns: https://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-MasterKeys-Mechanical-TenKeyless/dp/B01D8ETGNQ/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1512070133&sr=8-1-spons&keywords=masterkeys%2Bpro%2Bm&th=1

Idk about canadian things, but this is a great board (stay away from Razer if possible, nonstandard bottom rows and not really worth what they charge):

So this is the second time I've tried delving into your subreddit and wikis. Last time I couldn't make a decision and gave up. This time I'm determined to join the club. I've managed to make some decisions to narrow things down:

  • 75% or TKL. I want my F keys but I don't want a numpad.

  • Cherry MX Blue. I want the tactile and noisy click. I also want the option to buy some of those sweet custom keycaps I've been seeing.

  • Backlighting. Preferably blue

  • I'd like to stay under $150, but I'd spend up to $200 if someone can convince me it's worth it.

From there I've narrowed it down to a couple options:

  • E-Element Z-88

  • Ducky One

  • KBParadise V80

  • CM Masterkeys Pro S

The first one is obviously much cheaper, I'm worried that means poor build quality. I'd rather spend the money on something that will last. Should I just go with the Ducky? Is there another keyboard I missed that I should be considering?

(Bonus Points: I really like my trackpoint, if there's a board I've missed that meets all my other criteria, plus a trackpoint I'd be eternally grateful)

u/PostalFury · 1 pointr/buildapc

Honestly, the power supply can be just as important of a part to search about as a processor or a graphics card. A bad power supply can result in coil whine, poor lifespan, poor customer support via the company, or straight-up putting your entire build at risk with its poor internal parts.

As far as keyboards go, I personally love Cooler Master's TKL (tenkeyless) keyboards. I've had the Quickfire Rapid-i for around a year+ now, but they released a new line called MasterKeys Pro S that have RGB lighting and have been getting pretty great reviews (as most CM products do). I can't recommend TKL keyboards enough. Have great build quality and are super compact, which would be a plus for you since you said you were pretty limited on space.

With the money saved in this proposed build, I would suggest upgrading the 1060 to a 6GB model. You'll get better performance and a bit more sauce out of your games.

u/Garfield131415 · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

This keyboard by Cooler master fits most of your askings:
TKL
MX browns
Can't judge about this construction
RGB lighting
Black colour
No floating keys.

The keyboard looks well constructed but I can't say anything, since I don't own it.

u/Epicepicman · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

So, I'm looking to get my first mech. I think I've decided that I want a TKL with brown switches and RGB. I've narrowed it down to these three:

  • Masterkeys Pro S

  • MK Disco

  • Ducky One TKL RGB

Any opinions on which one I should get? I know the Disco is essentially a "lesser" version of the One TKL with less lighting modes and KBT switches instead of Cherries, but is it worth the extra $20 for the One TKL? (assuming I can find it in stock anywhere)
u/barndenn · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

This reminds me of the CM Storm MasterKeys Pro S but the CM Storm MasterKeys Pro S costs significantly less and you can get it sooner than February. It's currently $99 on Amazon.

MasterKeys Pro S

Are there any advantages that this keyboard has over the Cooler Master MasterKeys Pro S?

u/SpecCRA · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

What do you think of this? It's the cookie cutter board recommended by the community for a number of reasons. Mainly, it's great quality, allows for customization, and although expensive, is super solid. I know it's at the top of your budget. You could also get a cheap set of PBT shine through keycaps on aliexpress like this.

This is another great, solid option. It has even better keycaps and is super flashy. You will have no problem expanding on either of these if you so choose to later.

u/Resindentofontario · 1 pointr/bapcsalescanada

u/chriszhu · 1 pointr/buildapc

I have both the G610 and MasterKey Pro S, and I have to say...the two keyboards are very similar, similar profile, the amount of flex, layout (G610 has better dedicated media controls), but the Pro S has RGD lighting if that's what you are into. The Pro S is also a smaller keyboard without the number pads, with a Pro L version available if you want the number pads.

u/eizdeb · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

I have this board with KBT Blues and I really enjoy it. I actually prefer the KBT Blues to the Cherries on my pok3r. But Gateron Blues >> all for me.

I will say that the stock keycaps are not that great, but they get the job done. I would actually recommend this:
https://www.amazon.com/MasterKeys-Mechanical-Keyboard-Intelligent-Switches/dp/B01D8ETGNQ

My buddy just got one and oh man, it's sweet. It's $10 more than the Disco with Cherry switches, and the stock keycaps that come with it are really really nice.

Edit: Just to say a bit more about the Disco, I still use mine every day and I have 3 boards now. If you go with that I don't think you'll be disappointed.

u/shadowstar2417 · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

You can get a non-RGB model of the Pro S for much cheaper.

Here's a link on amazon, there's probably better places to buy them though.

u/ExplosiveTortuga · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

Should I go with a Ducky One 2 RGB TKL or a Cooler Master MasterKeys Pro S RGB for my first mechanical keyboard?

After a lot of research I've managed to narrow down my search to these two options (but feel free to suggest others if I'm missing something). I'll be using it primarily for gaming with some web browsing and programming as well. I'm probably going to go with MX Brown switches. I like the TKL because I don't really need the number pad and I want the extra desk space. I'd definitely like to have the RGB.

Is the extra $30 worth it for a newbie?

u/account4league · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

Does a keyboard exist with the following things under 150?

tenkeyless, PBT, backlighting, brown (or any non-clicky besides red) switches

im being super specific but im just curious if it exists. I found these so far:

MK Disco has everything i need, but idk if KBT browns are bad or not

Logitech G Pro isnt exactly mechanical but it sounds pretty alright on sound videos

CM Masterkey PBT seems good but without RGB, is the one with ABS and RGB going to be a lot different? im not sure if the difference from PBT to ABS is significant

u/ARCFXX · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

$~160 CAD, at that point, may as well get a MasterKeys Pro S that's guaranteed to arrive fast and safe for only $20 more.

u/MrWabbit- · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

I may be going crazy with research, but I've been lurking the past 2-3 weeks, trying to find the perfect keeb. I think I've narrowed it down to a few, but I'll list what I have, what I'm looking at, and what I'm looking for

Currently using a Razer Blackwidow Chroma, they have their razer green switches which are basically Cherry MX Blue clones. I just don't like the CLICK much anymore.

I game often and type occasionally, so a middle ground switch is what I was looking for, so I thought Cherry MX Brown would be best. However it seems like everyone now hates them? I bought a 9 switch tester with Brown and compared them to clear. I can definitely see the tactile difference, but I like the lighter feel to the browns. Just wondering if gaterons are the better brown, even though I see they have a bit of a wobbly feel, and rattling to them.

Here's what I was aiming for and the few I came up with.

u/MBAH2017 · 1 pointr/buildapc

OP, at the pricepoint, you probably won't be able to find a new board that's quality, mechanical, and RGB. It's kind of a "pick-two" situation.

For a little extra money to get everything:
Masterkeys RGB

High-Quality, Mechanical, closer to budget:
Ducky Zero

Medium quality, below budget, RGB, non-mechanical:
Corsair K55

u/GaveUpMyGold · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

Almost all of them with Cherry or Cherry clone switches (the kind with the stem shaped like a plus sign) will work with third party keycaps. You'll want to avoid Corsair and a few similar designs, since they use non-standard bottom rows (some keys are longer or shorter than the usual ANSI layout). Cooler Master is a good brand to start with if you're new to mechanical designs.

Brown is my personal preference. A small amount of tactile feedback and they're nearly silent. No annoying your roommate/teammates with the loud clicky sounds of Blues. Although, the sound is fairly satisfying, it's just very intrusive.

Blues are quite loud and aren't the best for gaming or living with other people. I looked around and it seems the mk disco keyboard with brown switches is out of stock and ducky tkl rgb is not out so you have two choices.

You can either get a Ducky shine 5 but it's a full size keyboard and will cost more or you can get the Masterkeys pro S or just wait a 1 or 2 till the ducky tkl comes out.

Are there any other keyboards that have the same layout with MX Browns that are in the same price range? Basically, what else could I be looking out for?

u/ItsReeff · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

If you look at images on here https://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-MasterKeys-Mechanical-TenKeyless/dp/B01D8ETGNQ They also are not lit up. When you hit the buttons do they light up? could be that they only light up to be indicators. Alot of keyboards do this. For example my caps wont light up unless I have caps lock on. If not you could potentially contact coolermaster and see if they can help you.

u/Caminon_the_Spooky · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

In your case, no. You don't lose out on a thing.

Some good TKL boards, all are RGB but all come in single color variants if you prefer:

-K65 LUX/Rapidfire RGB (If you like Cherry reds): Amazon

-Cooler Master Masterkeys Pro S (This one has MX Browns but I'm sure you can get it in other switches): Amazon

-Razer Blackwidow (X) Chroma TE (If you like cherry blues, both are on the same page): Amazon

-Logitech G410 (Romer-G is a love it or hate it switch): Amazon

Your best bet is the Cooler Master imo, but all of them are good. There are also cheaper boards out there, of course.

u/2SnHamans · 1 pointr/MechanicalKeyboards

Perhaps the MasterKeys Pro S is an interesting option for you. It is the successor to the Rapid-i and is RGB.

u/olbaze · 0 pointsr/pcmasterrace

Literally does not exist, not for that kind of money. You're gonna have to pretty much double your budget if you want RGB. At that point Cooler Master Master Keys is what I recommend.

At 80$, you've got barely enough to buy all the keys.
