Most good laptop coolers require that they sit on a desk, especially the slim ones.
There are ones this the Cooler Master NotePal LapAir that I would suggest for you if you plan on using it while its actually on your lap.
It's specifically designed for it and has a padded bottom so it doesn't hurt your legs.

I personally use this one, but it stays on my desk. I'm happy with it. Keeps the laptop nice and cool even when gaming.

I game exclusively on a couch with a laptop. I have a nice rigid mousepad and a chase lounger that I can extend my feet on. A cooling pad is necessary for any high demnad games as the laptop gets too hot otherwise. This is important, if you plan on actually keeping the laptop on your lap, get a cooler that has a pad built into it. If you don't, gaming will be extremely uncomfortable as most of them are made to sit on a desk and not a human lap.

I bought this for myself and my wife, they work pretty well. Mainly got it because it has padding underneath so it's not terribly uncomfortable.

Do you have any complaints about that cooling pad? I was looking at the one you have, but I'm always suspicious of the dimensions Amazon lists and wanna make sure I get a pad that fits a 15r3 perfectly. As long as you have unobstructed airflow, you won't have a problem. Laptops should run under the thermal limits without issue, and I often game on my laptop just on my knees or on a flat surface in bed with no issues.
Most of the time, cooling pads are complete placebos, and you can Google benchmarks that show that. If you have a laptop that exhausts heat from the side, you can get an Opolor, which actually sucks hot air out the side vent, effectively dropping the temperature.
