hi OP -- internet hugs from a stranger whose mom is in very late stage dementia. how are you doing? i hope you have people in your life you can talk about all this to. it is a hellacious thing to go through for everyone involved.
in case its useful, the one single thing that helped me the most has been a book, a little book with a title that sounds annoying. "Creating Moments Of Joy". the approach they recommend is along the lines of what a lot of other people are saying below.
