All Star Superman will teach you everything you need to know in life.
Batman Long Halloween, Dark Victory, all of Grant Morrisons run on Batman (RIP, Final Crisis, Batman and Robin Reborn, Batman INC).

Here's a few reading lists, pick your favorite characters and start looking for the TPB. Id highly recommend not picking up Civil War, it's really meh. And Planet Hulk is a much much better read than WWH (WWH is cool but the story itself is much less intimate).

Im also going to recommend the first 18 issues of Animal Man and Swamp Thing in the new 52 from a few years ago, up until the Rotworld Arc finishes. The first 12 issues of each are fantastic, with some AMAZING art. Infact, Alan Moore's run on Swamp Thing from the 80s is entirely unreal.

Final recommendation, Sandman if you want a trip in terms of storytelling. Fantastic series, but it would eat up all your gift cards, but if you're curious and want a taste there is a really nice collection centering around one of the main characters http://www.amazon.com/DEATH-Deluxe-Edition-Neil-Gaiman/dp/1401235484

No, I thought it was OK+. I have read "better" books (for me) by him.

But, if you wanted to try another book by him, Neverwhere is "more punchy" (action? or just hits the ground running "more") then American Gods. Or pick up the Sandman.

The Sandman is great, but a lot of setup and quicker pay offs. Or just check out Death (from the Sandman) collection to get your feet wet.

I remember it felt like it was just drag on, like climbing a hill in the begin ( you known setup , setup and more setting up).

But I do remember the last 3/4 of the book kind of felt you were riding a little red wagon down the other side of the hill (was a pretty good pay off, but it was some work at times). So, there is that.

Neil Gaiman's Sandman series is amazing. It's kind of big, but not like 50 years of back story big. There are even a few stand alone stories you can read without reading the whole series. The first one I read was Death Deluxe edition. It's Death's solo adventures, so you don't need to have read the rest of the series to know what's going on.

If you're a fan of Doctor Who or Star Trek I'd also recommend Assimilation, the crossover stories. It's only two volumes long, and I really loved it.

Thanks for posting this! I'm in the same boat as you. I want to read more comics, but it's hard to know where to start! Hopefully I can get some new ideas from this thread :D

I haven't read any Sandman yet, so I'm not entirely sure. I've just done some research as a prospective buyer.

I was trying to decide between the omnibus editions and the Absolute editions. From what I've read, the 2 omnibus volumes collect everything that's in the first 4 Absolute volumes. That's the main story.

But in addition to those, there are also 2 more Absolute editions which collect stories that take place within the Sandman universe, but are not connected with the main story. There's Absolute Sandman Volume 5 and Absolute Death.

Also, there are apparently loads of other spinoffs, mini-series, and one shots.

Yeah, sounds like you're looking for Death of the Endless from Neil Gaiman's Sandman exactly.
This is a collection of all her appearances and it is amazing IMO.

Also in the Sandman is a character who meets with Morpheus, the brother of Death, every hundred years to chat because Death lets him live on a whim. Very similar to this prompt.
