The Dell XPS9360 XPS 13 is a good laptop to look at
With the laptop you get what you pay for, a solid build quality in a well designed light weight package

A cheaper option would be the Acer Aspire R13
If you could bump up your budget to $1200, I'd recommend the Dell XPS 13 with the 7th gen i7. It's a little over your budget but I think it'll serve you well for your time at Poly!
If you need to stay within that 1K budget, you could get last year's model but I'd recommend the XPS from the first link since that has a more current CPU.
Regardless, if you can find a laptop that has a 7th generation i7 (so that your laptop crushes through all those eng. programs), you're golden.
check out this Dell XPS XPS9343-7273SLV or this ASUS ZenBook UX303UB as alternatives
If you want to go mac, I'd suggest waiting it out after WWDC when they announce their new model of the pro line-up and wait for that to come out, or go with a Dell xps 13 https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B015PYYO0C/ref=ox_sc_act_image_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER
It's ~$100 more than the regular i7. If you look on Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B015PYYO0C/), there are options for the i7 with Iris. Before discount: i7 => $1499 and i7 Iris => $1599.
for your usage you don't need an i7 so I would only recommend this configuration if you need a touchscreen, or even this configuration, if Dell XPS is not a must then I would suggest that you also check out this Zenbook because it comes with everything you need ,7th gen dual core CPU which is one of the best in the market and great for your usage, 8 GB of ram for smooth multitasking, Good SSD storage of 256 GB for faster boot up and loading, Full HD screen which is a must have for this price range, high build quality, long battery life, and it is within your budget.
What about this Dell XPS9350-5340SLV?
You don't need to spend this much, by a long shot. If you want sturdy, get the Lenovo ThinkPad 13.
It has the best keyboard on the market, high levels of durability, great battery life, high portability, and you can customize it with whatever specs you want. It also won't wipe out your budget, and you can even save a little more using eCoupon "SAV15THINKPAD" on checkout.
Otherwise the best balance of portability, battery life, and quality are going to come from the Dell XPS 13 9350 which is a much... prettier option. It's size is kept down by having virtually no bezel around the display, and it gets some pretty incredible 10+ hour battery life.
