Well, given that most food is produced in rural areas and liberal populations (I am assuming you mean a civil war between republicans and democrats) are mostly held up in urban centres, I think itd be a bit more like stalingrad. Particularly when when one considers that our military leans republican.
Honestly in the event of a civil war, if we were to embrace the same scorched earth tactics embraced by our forefathers, it would be quite ugly and far more violent and destructive than Sherman's march.
Population probably wouldnt matter much. Even conventional weapons could devastate urban centres and the closure of transportion routes would leave cities starving in no time.
Great idea for a post apocalyptic novel though. Only way to make it plausible though would be to find a way to negate power of the US military to ensure the plot remains firmly anti facists vs misunderstood rednecks vs government conspiracy people (gotta have then). Id read that book.
Edit: actually tried finding a book based on this fictional scenario and come up short. Most seem super outlandish

To end, it seems not even a good fiction writer can come up with a believable scenario that would ever lead to americans deciding that killing one another is logical progression of political expression.
