EIGHTH DOCTOR

BOOKS:

BBC: Eighth Doctor Adventures

  • These novels pick up immediately after the TV Movie.
  • The first novel, The Eight Doctors, relies heavily on Classic Who continuity. You may wish to skip it, or just read the Prologue; Chapters 1, 2, and 23; and the Epilogue to get the new companion's introduction.
  • Vampire Science and Alien Bodies are also well-regarded early starting points.
  • Alternatively, The Burning apparently works well as a starting point for the later EDAs
  • You can buy most of these novels online on websites like Amazon and eBay.

    COMICS:

    Radio Times: Doctor Who

  • These comics were printed in Radio Times 3775-3816.
  • They take place between the first two EDA novels.
  • The ending of the strip is a bit abrupt, as the run was cut short.
  • It is quite difficult to get a hold of these (without piracy).

    Doctor Who Magazine (1996-2005)

  • These comics were printed in DW Magazine 244-353. I highly recommend them.
  • They've been collected into four graphic novels that are still in print and available on Amazon:
  1. Endgame: UK, US, Canada
  2. The Glorious Dead: UK, US, Canada
  3. Oblivion: UK, US, Canada
  4. The Flood: UK, US, Canada

    Titan Comics: The Eighth Doctor

  • Mini-series set shortly before (or possibly during a quiet period of) the Time War.

    AUDIOS:

    BBC: Earth and Beyond

  • Short stories read by Paul McGann that tie into the BBC EDA novels.
  • The first story, Bounty, depicts new companion Sam's first trip in the TARDIS.
  • The original release, along with its first re-issue - Tales from the TARDIS 2, are incredibly difficult to obtain, but luckily it has recently been re-released.

    Big Finish: Main Range

  • Full-cast audios that usually run 2 hours, and are divided into 4 parts (aka Classic Who format).
  • The Eighth Doctor releases in this multi-Doctor range are set during an early period of his life.
  • Stories featuring Mary are set before those featuring Charley, but as they were released later they generally work better being heard in release order.
  • I recommend starting with Storm Warning and working your way through the Charley stories before getting into the Mary ones.

    Big Finish: Eighth Doctor Adventures

  • Full-cast audios that usually run 1 hour, and make up larger seasonal arcs (aka New Who format)
  • These Eighth Doctor tales are set during a later period of his life, and don't require knowledge of the previous Main Range releases. Although, listening to the Charley audios does give you insight into the Series 4 finale.
  • The first EDA release, Blood of the Daleks, is a great place to start for New Who fans.

    Big Finish: Dark Eyes

  • Full-cast audios divided into four boxsets, each containing four 1 hour linked-stories.
  • The first story contains heavy spoilers for the BF Eighth Doctor Adventures finale.
  • I recommend listening to the Eighth Doctor Adventures, Robophobia, and UNIT Dominion first.

    Big Finish: Doom Coalition

  • Full-cast audios with the same format as Dark Eyes.
  • A companion is carried over from Dark Eyes, but this still works well as a starting point.
  • You might want to consider listening to The Black Hole before this.

If you're in the UK, there's Doctor Who Magazine's collected comic anthologies, which are basically like a whole series in itself. They rock. This is my favourite

If you're just needing a visual medium, the Doctor Who Magazine 8th Doctor strips are all collected in four graphic novels.
