Check with a local university to see if they have a Slavic languages department and an accompanying library. Also, check with a local public library to see if something might be available through interlibrary loan.

She may already have read Tom Sawyer - it seems like every Bulgarian I have ever met has read that one.

Every once in a while, I will run across Bulgarian books in a Half Price Books/used books store (to sort the Bulgarian ones from the Russian, look for a price on the back. Bulgarian prices will be in Leva (лв).

I am guessing she can speak some English, but chooses not to because she feels intimidated either because she thinks her accent is poor, or that her vocabulary is lacking.

As far as books she may be familiar with from Bulgaria, you can try to find a translation of "Under the Yoke" by Ivan Vazov or "Bai Ganyo" by Aleko Konstantinov. I have seen both of these in English.

This book in Bulgarian is This book in English and is very good.

Good luck, and thank you for your effort.
