Nice manicure kit (cant go wrong with anything from Solingen in Germany).
Or a nice shave kit - Safety Razor, Brush (at least best badger quality), Bowl, stand
For what it's worth, this is the brush.
I paid $35 USD for mine at the time. If the one that's available today performs like mine, I would say it's well worth $50 USD, because that would be an investment of approximately $4 per year on that brush.
That said, there are likely better options available. These two in particular are highly regarded from what I've seen so far in this sub:
Whipped Dog Silvertip Badger
Omega #11047
That Omega brush is actually a mix of boar and badger hair, which is pretty interesting.
Hope that helps!
Looks good except that I would recommend an Edwin Jagger razor (this one, for example) rather than the Parker: a more reliable brand and the new EJ head design is excellent. Then you'll need a brush, and the EJ Best Badger in Medium is an excellent starter brush.
The stand is superfluous. You can just stand the brush on its base to dry and the razor on its side. Leave them in the open.
I have no connection with Edwin Jagger, but their razors are excellent and quite reasonably priced.
I would not recommend that brush, or any other made with "pure" badger hair. It's the lowest grade of badger, and is scritchy to start with. Most manufacturers clip the hair into a bulb shape (instead of forming full-length hairs into shape, as is done with more expensive brushes), which makes the brush distinctly unpleasant to use. If you're going to buy an EJ badger brush, I'd recommend at least best grade hair; super badger would be better.
ETA: For aftershave balm, Speick and Nivea both make good products. But I use alcohol-based splashes, so you'll get more reliable information from people who prefer balms.
EJ razors are solidly designed. Reliable, good shaving experience with my EJ89. I have an EJ best badger brush that I really enjoy.
I wouldn't pay 33 for a pure badger brush, especially not from Omega who specialize in boar and synthetics to my mind. If you can go outside of Amazon, get a "Finest" from FrankShaving Co, if not I'd use whatever capital you have left to upgrade to a better brush.
On Amazon I'd go for an Edwin Jagger brush probably, I have a best badger that has served me well for many years. Here Here and Here for example.
Personally, I use these:
(I use Feather blades, but that's just because I'm hardcore. Get a sampler pack and see what works best for you.)
(Though this is a great deal on a just-better-than-starter brush that's still very high quality)
(Sometimes I also use their Bay Rum aftershave. At least two straight men have told me I smell good.)
Total outlay is about $120 out the door (assuming the cheaper brush), but after that you buy blades at $0.10-0.50 per blade and a puck of soap for $6 every few months. Instead of spending 5 minutes hating shaving, you spend 10 minutes enjoying it.
If you don't mind going just outside of $40, I would suggest this.
