Hello Mr_Pockets.

Lithium cells will perform better than alkaline cells in almost every way. They will provide more power, more run time, have a much longer shelf life, they operate in a greater range of temperatures (just don't get them too hot), they are lighter, and you don't run the risk of them leaking inside your light if left in for a long time.

The major draw back of course is that they are more expensive. It really comes down to how, and how often you use your light. If you keep your light handy (in a pack or your car) but only use it in special circumstances (maybe once a week), you are probably better off buying lithium cells because of all the benefits discussed above. If, on the other hand, you are using your light every day and going through batteries quite often, alkaline cells may be fine. They won't be sitting in your light long enough to start leaking (hopefully) and they're cheaper (especially if your dad is buying them :)

If you are using your light that often, I would definitely recommend investing in some rechargeable lithium ion batteries and a good charger. This can be a sizeable investment if you get good stuff but it may pay off in the long run. Unfortunately, in your particular case, lithium ion cells are not really an option. Rechargeable lithium ion cells have a much higher voltage than alkaline or lithium primary cells. They are about 4.2 volts each, so two in series is 8.4 volts. The Quark AA^2 was not designed to handle that much voltage. You risk damaging your light.

There is another option for you however. Rechargeable NiMH cells provide (roughly) the same voltage as alkaline and lithium primary cells. Nowaday, there are low self discharge NiMHs that do not drain themselves over time as older NiMH cells did. These cells are very safe, are offered in relatively high capacities, and are actually cheaper than rechargeable lithium ion cells. Here is a link to the highest capacity/quality NiMH cells that I know of. I use these in all my AA lights and they work great. Do be warned that they are relatively heavy. Compared to Energizer L91 lithium cells, they will noticeably increase the weight of your light. I always keep a pack of lithiums around anyway for emergency backup cells so if I'm going to be carrying my light around a lot on a particular day, I just pop in some lithiums and I'm good to go. It's not a big deal for every day uses however.

Hope this helps.

Cheers!

I have the sc51w. Same light, but in neutral white. I love it and use it as an around the house light, or my EDC when I break out the fancy clothes. I would recommend it to anyone. Paired with some Sanyo Eneloop XX I get usually a week of use per battery. It will last only about 1 hour when constantly on full brightness though. Lithium AAs would increase runtime a bit, but be way to expensive for me to use often.

I also have a Fenix E15. On full brightness it will get almost 2 hours per battery, but you won't want to hold it for that long, it will get quite hot. Modes are not memorized, and cycle MED->LOW->HIGH. I like this light as well, (It usually is my EDC as it is cheaper than the sc51w so I won't mind as much when I beat the hell out of it). One CR123A lasts me a month or so.

Ive had this issue actually, batteries got so hot i couldn't let them touch anything (i have a melted dent in my keyboard) I got these batteries and charger as a replacement, they don't get nearly as hot and are much much better, good luck! http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0058GZWXQ/ref=oh_details_o07_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

4 Pack is cheaper per battery so maybe Im over looking something! Thanks for the comments, I want to get these today.

> Another controller costs a lot more than a pack of rechargeable AA's with a charger.

Sure doesn't seem like it's that much (you can see the price of the batteries plus the charger a little further down the page) of a difference.

Seriously. I see so many people consistently waste their money on batteries. Buy yourself a few 4 packs of these for all your electronic devices (rechargable mouse, keyboard, gamepad, flashlight, etc.), and this charger and they'll pay for themselves within the year.

+1

YongNuo YN-468II - cheap, ok-good light output, supports E-TTL and optical slave modes.

Get some Eneloop XX batteries (and charger) to go with it

I charge mine whenever they die, I just keep a few spare. You're charging the batteries so fast because they only need a partial charge. In reality they full charge in about 2 hours for a single battery, and 3 hours if you charge 2 at once. My preferred batteries are these ones. They're really stron and allow for hard hits, but you have to be careful to not combust with these.

If you can grab Glyph batteries then go for it.
Otherwise read this to understand the consequences of your choices, and grab something in this range:
Powerex 2700mAh
Sanyo Eneloop XX 2500mAh
Imedion 2400mAh

They are well known by the MFLB community and you can't go wrong with these!

AAs are awesome...

Especially if you have these

Or you can go with the energizer high speed chargers and have a set of AAs recharged in under 15min.
