Some extra notes that may be helpful...

  • Currently the EVGA 450w 80+ bronze psu is on sale on Amazon for $22 + tax. If you're not in a rush, can usually find a 400-450w psu in the $20-30 range, sometimes rebates are required.
  • Similar case to the source 210 is the Coolermaster N400. Again, if you have time to wait, this can be found for ~$30 after MIR (price i paid for mine). Has the same amount of drive bays and space.

    Considering both of these options would bring the price down to the ~$245-$250 range, can put the savings towards a shiny new SSD for it.

Been lurking for a bit, never posted. I’m attempting my first build in 15 years so I have a question that I’m not sure warrants it’s own post so I’m bringing it here.

Looking to do things on a tight budget so I’m going the seemingly tried and true optiplex upgrade route. I’m looking at the following at the moment:

Dell Optiplex 9010(Intel Core i7-3770) or 9020(Intel Core i7-4770), and hopefully having 16gb ram off, EBay and adding the following:

Gpu: GTX 1060 6gb used off EBay

EVGA 450 BT 80+ Bronze 450w psu

You may need 16 gbs of ram when the build gets older and processes start to build up / when you stream any given game. The WD SSD you have is kinda expensive - you can find 240 Gb kingston SSDs on Ebay for ~$60-70 when they hit a sale (happens semi-often, check /r/buildapcsales daily). 1050Ti is great for budget builds - check around and price match and for upcoming GPU deals. Don't forget the case and PSU. You should be able to run off This PSU and put it all in a case Like this one or similar

You could also try switching down to the Ryzen 5 1400, or waiting for the Ryzen 3.

The 450w should be adequate. For reference, the CPU has a 65w TDP, and according to Tom's Hardware, the 980 is typically about 180w during gaming. However, the 980 may peak to about 280w during stress testing. Add another about 50w for peripherals and drives, this comes to almost 300w. The other 200w can feed the motherboard, although the motherboard probably uses half that. Plus, Amazon reviews have comments of running the 980 on this PSU, even in SLI.

I would not trust that power supply, does it even have the 8pin pcie connector? I think googling it shows its only 324W for 12V rails and no PCIE connector so the RX 480 would not even work on that without adapter and I wouldnt risk using it, chance of burning the PC up in flames.

EVGA puts out some great quality ones for really cheap. Here is a great example, if youre not overclocking, bronze are really gonna be the best ones you'll need. Just make sure double check your wattage lines up (you can check that on PCPP)

This is what I would build. Overclocking the r3 1200 takes only a few minutes and you have a pc that's able to play just about any game at high to ultra settingsd. But you may be able to find the gtx 1060 6gb cheaper.

I would Highly recommend an ssd, a couple things you could do to save price is remove thermal paste, cryorig provides good enough paste, go for this power supply, it's on sale (plus no ketchup and mustard cables). Your case already has fans, so those aren't needed either. Also, the pentium g4560 performs very similarly to an i3 and costs only 70 dollars.

I really like this and might use an old PSU to rig up a desktop vape.

For anyone interested you can do this with a modular computer PSU and not worry about splicing 120v lines. This PSU is capable of 35 amps on its 12v line. All you need to turn it on and off is either a permanent jumper wire and use the PSU switch, or get a switch and use it as the jumper wire. Then to connect the mod to it is as easy as trimming one set of pci wires so you only have the 12v and gnd lines. Then the mod is quickly detachable and all lines have safe connectors. That PSU also has a 3 year warranty, no idea if the other one does too.

You can probably get a used Dell with an i5-2400, 4 gigs of ram, and 500gb hard drive for around $120, maybe less if you are patient on ebay.

After that, get a decent psu on the cheap, like this:

The S340 is an amazing (relatively) budget gaming case to build in. You're going to love it.

The 600 watts is a bit overkill for a non-overclock-able i5.

Up to you if you want to go that route, but you could easily get by with a 450 watt PSU; evga has a new 80+ bronze PSU for 20 bucks right now on amazon.

Thanks. There are actually no more connectors coming from the case fans, and my mobo doesn't have any molex slots, but there are 2 SATA slots (case has 2 fans) so it's best to buy an adapter, right? My PSU doesn't have any slots for molex either.

I think you're better off saving some more for a new build.
$300 is probably enough for Pentium G4560, new mobo, 8GB DDR4 RAM, and GTX 1050/RX 560.

Case and storage can be reused. PSU depends on the model, but if it's bundled with the case it's most likely low quality. If you want to replace it to be safe there's this one on sale for very cheap, or you can get a better, bigger one for future upgrades.

If you can spend some more you can also get an RX 470/570.

8gb of ram is not enough for gaming anymore, let alone any kind of multitasking. Get 16gb of ram @3000mhz, it's like $95 on newegg. If you need to save money drop your cpu down to the ryzen 5 2600, just has slower clocks. For power supply, upgrade it to something that won't blow up. - Thermal paste comes pre-applied to the cooler, so you don't need any.

- The G4560 is back ordered everywhere. You can wait and hope you get one within a reasonable time frame or you can just get the G4620 right now.

- Cheaper motherboard.

- Faster RAM since your motherboard supports up to DDR4 2400.

- Downsized the SSD. 120 GB is enough for your most frequently played games and the extra savings goes toward a better graphics card.

- The 1050 Ti is a sizable performance boost and will last you a bit longer due to the 4 GB of VRAM.

- Nicer case. This isn't necessary, but it's not that much more money to get a mid tower with a side window that will look nicer and be easier to build in.

- Cheaper PSU. I would actually recommend getting this PSU as it's just a newer version of the one I put in the build and the price is an absolute steal. I didn't include it in the build because it's not in PCPartpicker's database yet.

Power supply was 50% off on amazon, perfectly suitable for my needs, already purchased as it was a 3 day sale.

I tried to sell Dad on one 8Gb stick, but he knows my gaming rig has 16Gb and he wants to be cool like me so we splurged for the rest. If my budget was tighter, that would be the 1st thing to go, but we have room to play since we saved alot by not needing an SSD or Case.

Edit: I just realized that the linked Power Supply was actually not the one I purchased, mine has sleeved black cables and is the 450 BT Model which for some reason doesnt show up on PC partpicker.

Pretty good, but I would change a few things, such as getting 2 sticks of 8 gb ram instead of 1 stick of 16 gb ram (dual channel is faster) and getting a 450W power supply instead of a 500W like this one (500w is overkill for this pc unless you plan on upgrading)

Look at your local craigslist for cpus and gpus, it's a great place to start. You should look at 3/4/5/6 gen i5s or i7s.

For AMD, I would stay away from AM3+ because there's no upgrade path. You may want to get an athlon x4 950 because it's AM4.

For used gpus, I made a list of good ones to look at for your price point.

AMD/ATI 5970, 6950, 6970, 6990, 7850, 7870, 7950, 7970 (I don't know much about amd cards past this)

gtx 480, 580, 590, 680, 670, 660, 690, 660ti, 750ti (Would personally avoid this, the price to performance isn't that great), 760, 770

Look at deals and you can get a lot of those parts for less. It may be better to get a 120gb ssd for $40 and a much better graphics card. The SSD isn't needed, but your system will feel much faster.

2 year warranty on the power supply. 0 year warranty on the rest of your box that it destroys when it fails. This is not a good deal. Spend an extra $10-15 and get yourself something rated 80+, like the [EVGA BT] (https://www.amazon.com/EVGA-Bronze-Warranty-Supply-100-BT-0450-K1/dp/B01N9X3F8F) or the Thermaltake Smart series. Or do yourself a real favor and check out what www.Jonnyguru.com recommends.

This build will be using two Intel Xeon processors on Intel Socket 2011 motherboard with Quad-Channel DDR3-ECC RDIMM memory. It does not include specifications for SSD or HDD.

CPU: The Intel Xeon E5-2650 is a high power, 8 core, 16 thread CPU that came out Q1 2012. 2.0Ghz clock, 2.8 Ghz turbo. It has a counterpart, the E5-2600L series who are also 8 cores, but low power. If you don't need quite as much Passmark power, these are also a power saving option at a slightly lower price point. MSRP when it was released was around $1100.00 USD Each. Plex Transcoder has true multi-threaded support and will take advantage of all 32 threads. So while this CPU might not be clocked as fast as what most of you are used to, the sheer amount of cores/threads will more than make up for it. Dual E5-2650's will score 15000 on passmark. Another thing to consider is that since the CPU is so cheap, you won't have to worry about it when it comes time to upgrade in the future. You can replace it with any V1 or V2 E5-2600 series cpu's. Dual E5-2660 V2, 10 core 20 thread, 2.20GHz base / 3.00 Ghz turbo in the future for about +4000 extra passmark score.

Because of this, wiring the power can be a bit tricky, and to get it done in a clean way, need the 12" extension.

The PSU won't use all its available power. If the system needs 200W and you have a 600W PSU it'll only provide 200W as needed. If you're worried about your electric bill then you want something with an 80 + (bronze/gold/platinum/etc) rating. This PSU is on sale. EVGA makes really nice PSUs and this one is bronze rated as well:
