I only have a EVGA 500w 80+ certified PSU. That is too weak for the Fury, right? I can sell this PSU to my business (I need to build a new computer for it anyway) and use that money toward a better PSU if I wanted but what would be a good (and relatively) cheap PSU to run the fury. I prefer Newegg or Amazon Prime.

EDIT: Fuck it, I pulled the trigger. Was sitting on the money to buy XFX/Nitro+ 480 but I've been rocking this 6950 for too long and I'm tired of waiting at this point. This seems like a killer deal for $275 and free shipping (I used the Paypal promo). Here's to new GPUs!

u/Flying_Spaghetti_ · 8 pointsr/pcmasterrace

You really need a better power supply. Drop the Hyper 212 EVO and get this PSU instead. Most budget builds stick with the stock heatsink anyway. I would not put a $10 PSU in anything, you risk frying every component of the build.

u/Lemmss · 6 pointsr/pcmasterrace

PSU is an easy choice for your build, go with an EVGA 500 Watt PSU. It's not overpriced and has more than enough power for you system

PSU here.

GL, and happy gaming!

PS: obligatory " should've gotten an r9 390 "

u/chad2448 · 6 pointsr/buildapc

I completely forgot you mentioned the store credit... Go for it! But, Try to get a beefier PSU. Anything around 500-600 watts is decent. You're going to want a certified power supply like this! Most GPU's will labeled their recommended amount of watts to drive the GPU.

u/cjk813 · 6 pointsr/buildapc

It seems like you're on a pretty tight budget from the comments. This is what I would do.

Used ebay optiplex ($120) - This isn't new tech by any means, but for $120 you're getting a quad core sandy bridge cpu, 8 gb of ram, a 500gb HDD and a Windows license. You can't beat that value.

PSU ($40) - EVGA 500w - Cheap, stable, reliable.

GPU ($105) - XFX RX 460, suitable for most newer games at medium settings at 1080p. If you can spend a little over $300 for your build I'd highly suggest upgrading this to an rx 470.

Overall this system will do what you want for under $300.

Oooh I like this build. I was looking for a wifi-enabled motherboard for cheaper for you. No dice. Consider downgrading the motherboard and using a PCIe or USB wifi adapter.

Your PSU is overpowered. A 500W will do just fine. Consider downgrading this part unless you intend to buy a second GPU and pop those in SLI in the future. That is actually an option for you.

RAM is still overpriced and word is this will continue to about January. Consider buying one stick of 8GB now and a second stick later on if you need the speed. One thing to absolutely note here is that you have 3000MHz RAM in your list, but the board only officially supports 2666. Please be careful with your RAM. I would buy some cheapo RAM, just one stick of 8GB 2666 and another around January when the prices drop. This will move your bottleneck to the RAM... but that should be the case today based on today's prices.

This build is missing storage, do you have your own? That motherboard supports NVMe storage and should probably be filled at some point in it's lifespan to get the most out of that motherboard

Insofar as the case is concerned... it's white. White works well with white parts... but you have other colors there, too. Consider a black case so that the motherboard doesn't stick out like a sore thumb in there with orange heat blocks and lettering. Or find a motherboard with white heatsinks (they exist) and grab some white RAM.

u/PillClinton710 · 4 pointsr/buildapc

Definitely cutting it close. Under load its possible your card and CPU could ramp up past 380w. I would suggest this EVGA 500W power supply to give yourself a little more breathing room.

Oh my god please don't do a prebuilt from here and not likes Dell prebuilt like someone built it here. You can learn so much but buying the parts, and researching it can be a bonding experience with your son!

anyway lets get this build started!
Idk what you want but for a case that looks super sexy the NZXT S340 would be a good start, cheap and nice.

TOTAL: $554

Edit 2: As your budget is $600 and I don't know how lenient you are with going over or what, but an Asus RX 470 would be a better graphics card and would increase the total to around $650.

Note: $28

Edit 4: If you want peripherals that's gonna be around $1000 in total for decent crap. I would suggest a 1080p 60hz monitor, a mechanical keyboard ( I use a G. Skillz KM780 RGB and it is fabulous), a nice pair of headphones HyperX cloud 2, and a nice set of speakers Logitech Z506. Also idk what you have but get a wifi adapter as well unless you can hook up to Ethernet which is highly recommended.

Edit 5: If any other questions just PM me glad to help you out more.

Edit 6: shit I forgot drives and OS. I'm too tired to link things anymore so I suggest getting a 128gb Samsung PRO SSD for your OS and main shit then get a Seagate 1TB HDD and you're good to go. Hopefully I covered everything.

Honestly 500-600 wouldn't make a very decent computer for a first rig. You can make one and well I made one just right now but that doesn't take into account peripherals. If you wanted 500-600 WITH peripherals that would have been the hardest budget build of my life. To maintain quality and performance, I'm cringing just thinking of it.

u/JK464 · 4 pointsr/ManyATrueNerd

Well you'd need a new graphics card and cpu.. but to upgrade cpu... you'd need a new motherboard which means new ram aswell... and on top of that a new psu to power it all .. which basically the entire computer.. so costly
~~
Unless someone can think of a decent cpu that fits the same socket..~~

Edit: ok after some digging this is what we got:

~~CPU: Intel X6800

£40 ish~~

~~RAM: 4gb Ddr2

£20 ish~~

~~GPU: this is very flexible let's throw in a gtx 970 for now (it mightnt be supported this can be checked later)
(MSI NVIDIA GTX 970 Gaming Twin Frozr HDMI DVI-I DP Graphics Card (4GB, PCI Express, DDR5, 256 Bit) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00NOP536Y/ref=cm_sw_r_other_awd_tKtkxbGQRE3JA)
£275~~

~~Psu: 500w

£35~~

You might want to consider a bigger hard drive maybe an ssd, also the gpu I suggested is most certainly overkill for everything else and mightnt work but it's only to give an idea for now.. I'm not even sure how well the x6800 will perform, hopefully someone more in the known can add to this

edit: i was talking rubbish

u/Ceadarz101 · 3 pointsr/pcmasterrace

Yeah, this one is close to twice the price, but you need a good power supply for your build.

u/tehRandomAccount · 3 pointsr/pcmasterrace

In the top right corner of your linked page, PCPartPicker gives a rough estimation of 363W. For under £50 I'd get this.

u/puckbeaverton · 3 pointsr/AskMen

lol @ XBone. Sounds like the name of a villain in a 90s action movie.

Here's the deal. You can go the console route, and that's fine. But you're going to spend a lot more money in the long run.

You buy a PS4, an xbox one, a switch, whatever. Call it $400. OK. Cool. You buy games for it. $40, $30, $50. Sweet. Controllers. $50 $50 $50... Shit it's getting expensive. New games come out. Why the fuck are they $60 a piece? Holy shit. You wait a while. Jesus they only went down to $55? FFFFFFUUUUUU I wanna playyyyyyy.... Why aren't there more games and cheaper games? Granted, you do have the nice option to buy classic games on PSN and for Switch. Ugh.....fine, I'll shell out for Overwatch. Fine. I'll shell out for Destiny 2. Fuuuuck that was like $120. What....what the fuck is this? PS5? Nintendo Switch2?

ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?

BUT. Let me play out that scenario for you on a PC.

Total cost: $570 US, or roughly what you'd spend on your console and a few controllers.

BUT, now you have the entire library of all the computer games ever made at your disposal. Not to mention that, but you've got emulators to play all those classics that you could have bought on the PSN/Switch.

And instead of paying $60 every time a new game comes out, you look at what came out about 6 months ago. You put it on your steam wishlist. You get an email someday soon that says "an item on your wishlist is on sale."

Oh holy shit. Doom is $16. Holy fuck, it's the steam summer sale. Games are 75% off, 80% off....they're basically giving them away.

Then you sign up for Humble Bundle.

Holy shit. You can get Alien Isolation for $5.

These are 5 star games we're talking here. Not to mention you get like 10 no names to go with it. Hell, you're probably going to spend hours playing some of those.

Pretty soon you've got 100+ games that you may have spent a few hundred dollars on. Things are great, but you decide hey, I would LIKE to have a little more FPS on these. So you order yourself a new GT 1080, and sell your 1050 on ebay making back about $50. Later on down the line you decide to upgrade the processory, maybe add a stick of ram later. Now you got a stew goin. But you don't have to, that rig will play almost anything (though possibly on lower visual settings)

PC is just more budget friendly in my opinion. You never have to just throw the whole thing away and get a new one. You can always replace components and upgrade things individually. There's never new platforms to learn, get used to. You can always use your same old controller, and you can always play your old games. In my view, buying consoles is basically throwing away money because you have to buy so much hardware EVERY TIME they decide to release a new console.

There's give and take to it. I just like the stability and deep discounts I get from Steam, GOG, and Humble Bundle. I wouldn't even game if it wasn't this cheap.

u/t1m1d · 3 pointsr/CarAV

Get a decent PSU, at least 500w. Look at the specifications to make sure it has a single 12-volt rail, then make sure it has at least 40A on that rail.

This one is pretty cheap and can do up to 40A on the 12v rail, even though it doesn't say it on amazon.

You can get a "500w" power supply for as cheap as $20 (e.g. Logisys and cheap Thermaltake) but I honestly don't trust those. This is about as cheap as I'd be willing to go.

Sometimes the Corsair CX500 goes on sale for $20, which is awesome at that price. Unfortunately, it's $65 at the moment. I'd trust it more than the EVGA, but I don't think it really justifies the price difference.

u/Mathematicu5 · 3 pointsr/pcmasterrace

What the person said above and below. I would not recommend using just any brands for PSU. It's pretty much the foundation of your whole PSU. You don't want your whole system to go haywire because of your PSU.

I had the 500 PSU EVGA. I recently upgraded 3 months ago. It's wonderful!

u/Drewology · 3 pointsr/buildapc

With that power supply, you're really limiting yourself.
You need to get a cheap, reliable 500W PSU. Something like the EVGA W1 is your friend in this realm.

You're CPU is a real limiting factor. Ideally, you want an i5, which you can buy an i5-3550 or an i5-3570, but those will take up the rest of your budget. If you were buying a new CPU, I would recommend getting a new motherboard as well (full system upgrade to Skylake). That's too much as it's a new CPU, mobo and new DDR4 RAM.

Stick with the CPU for now and upgrade the GPU.

Head over to /r/hardwareswap and find a used 280, 280X, 290, 290X. Here's a 290X for $240, but it might be out of your price range, since you need to buy the $40 PSU first. You can find 280X for $120-$140. A 290 is around $175-$200 and a 290X is between $200-$240 on that subreddit.

With that in mind, I would recommend making a post on /r/hardwareswap looking for a 500W PSU for $25 shipped and a 290 for $170 shipped. You should find a PSU for that price, but might be hard pressed on the 290 and might need to settle for a 280X for around $140 shipped.

Last, but not least, if you get an SSD (say a 128GB), you install your Windows on it and maybe some of your games. You should notice a big speed boost from reduced loading times.

u/MrMallow · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

I going with a red and black theme, not important but figured I would mention it. I was given this case, power supply, 4 1tb seagates, and a bunch of red LED corsair fans from a friend to "start me off".

EDIT: this is the model of the PS

EDIT2: so everyone seems to be pushing for the cheaper Mobo and the better processor, this doesn't make sense to me at all and has me really confused. I was always taught (granted my knowledge is outdated) that getting the better Mobo is the best thing you can do because things like CPUs and Cards can always be updated and switched out later on. Isnt the Mobo the backbone of the build? why would you want to skimp in the heart of the PC?

u/freestylekyle314 · 2 pointsr/PrintrBot

There's some weird stuff with the power supply, some power supply don't like giving that much power over the PSU connector without a load on the main 12v rail. I had a expensive 600w I tried to use and it would do about what you're describing. Then I dug an old 350 watt it and it works great.
When I was looking into it this one was recommended https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00H33SFJU/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

u/v3c7r0n · 2 pointsr/homelab

By the time you're done putting drives in them, honestly you could build a fairly cheap mid-range desktop and run unraid, esxi or xen on it. As a for instance:

I just built a machine (yesterday) for my cousin for $281 with an AMD A10-7870K, 8GB of RAM (G.Skill), Gigabyte board, EVGA 500W PSU (I had drives and a case) with some minor tweaking, it should the job decently, and not sound like you live inside a box fan that's always on. I would look at adding a dedicated video card for plex, but even then, you can run plex on an I5 Intel NUC off Server 2008 R2 with 8GB of RAM (that's what mine currently is) so the A10 might be able to handle it on it's own.

u/VegasGamer75 · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

FO4 will definitely keep you involved. I've gotten 150+ hours on it already and I haven't even played the DLCs. Just getting into building all the settlements up. Also, if you have Steam (which I am assuming is where you have your FO4), grab Evolve since it's free across the board. Fun little arena shooter.

Also, on Amazon you should grab this PSU. I ordered it for my old desktop (since I pulled its out for my new build this weekend). Great price and should do you well. It's non-modular, but the price might get it to you for the new build sooner.

As for the ordering on Amazon for the GPU, I have no idea how long it will take. I really am not sure what Amazon did. They didn't even have them listed (for almost all model 1060s) before they were on back-order. So I am hoping that just means they got their shipment later than other retailers and they will be up soon.

u/Froop_Loop · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

This Is the PSU in question. And why should I reconsider the CPU? Can you suggest a better one in a similar price range? Thanks for the help dude.

u/TerryMathews · 2 pointsr/buildapc

Go into your BIOS and find the option that controls what the PC does on power failure. Make sure that's set to Always Off.

That will let us isolate whether you're having a power issue (maybe circuit in your house) or a PC issue.

After you set that if it dies and doesn't reboot automatically you know it's a PSU/power outlet issue. If it reboots, you know it's on the other side of the PSU (Mobo/CPU/RAM/video card/software).

My gut instinct:

u/DJPortlane · 2 pointsr/buildapc

I don't know much about computers--I just want to play Cities: Skylines. Can I upgrade my current computer, and is it worth it? I have an HP Pavilion H8-1230 with an Nvidia GT 620. If I buy a GTX 960 and this power supply can I just swap them out? Will this work? How do I find out whether the GPU will fit on this motherboard? Thanks.

u/DZCreeper · 2 pointsr/buildapc

For a pre-built you won't find better value. That i7-4790 is a rare find in a machine below $700. The power supply having not much amperage and the motherboard using a 14 pin connector is annoying but not really a problem. You can get a new power supply + adapter for under $50.

https://www.amazon.com/EVGA-WHITE-Warranty-Supply-100-W1-0500-KR/dp/B00H33SFJU

That will support basically any GPU upgrade you want to make.

If you do decide to upgrade to a 970 make sure to upgrade your power supply as well. You are probably going to want a power supply around 500W. something like This should work.

u/Handy_Crabs · 2 pointsr/techsupport

Ah, there is your problem. I did a quick search on that model after cringing, I recognize the Apevia brand (Turbolink). These are extremely cheap PSU's that should not be in a system with a GTX 970, or even an older GTX 680 for that matter. This PSU distributes power accross 2 12v rails at 14amps each...this is not enough for your system at all. Once that GPU gets under any load, it will crash.

One of the things that first time builders often neglect is the need for a solid power supply. After all, this is the device that pumps volts into your beloved components. Why spend 300-400 on a GPU when you are just going to skimp on a decent PSU.

See this link for the sad truth about this PSU.
http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/apevia-turbolink-atx-tl450w-bk-power-supply-review/6/

Apparently, the reviewer's test model only has 1 12v rail, even though it advertises 2. Also, don't think that you have 28amps, total 12v amperage is not as easy as adding the two up. Your PSU probably has closer to 22-24 amps and the GTX 970 requires 28amps on a 500W PSU minimum. This isn't counting the amps required for your CPU as well. This explains the crashes during gameplay.

I'd recommend the following for your build (It has 62amp on a single 12v rail):
https://www.amazon.com/Corsair-CX600-Supply-Bronze-Certified/dp/B0092ML0OC/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1482161389&sr=8-2&keywords=corsair+psu

Or for cheaper you can get this (40amps on the 12v rail):
https://www.amazon.com/EVGA-WHITE-Warranty-Supply-100-W1-0500-KR/dp/B00H33SFJU/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1482161485&sr=8-9&keywords=corsair+psu

Sorry for the super-delayed response....life got in the way.

In looking for stuff compatible with the 4870 series, it looks like it may be a mid-tower with a standard ATX power supply. If so, you can use just about any power supply you like. I would get something local that you can return just in case they did put something proprietary that you can't easily replace (doesn't look like it though). People online seemed to have a 250-300W PSU in theirs by default though....you may be able to get away with that using just power adapters if your graphics card is reasonably efficient.

I haven't built a machine in a while (I'll be honest). But back in the day, FSP (Fortron Source) and Seasonic made some of the best PSUs you could get. I think FSP sold some as PowerMan. Antec, Corsair, EVGA, etc were good value-for-dollar options as well.
I would just make sure to do your research on whatever particular models are available nearby within your budget and then get something based on that. If you need a starting point though, something like this Tom's article should be decent.
https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/best-psus,4229.html

If I were to order something online, this one seems like a decent option.
Tons of reviews, lots of connectors, 40A on the 12V rail, and a good warranty from a known company.

Thanks for your reply! I agree about the PSU and now that you mention it, I have been getting the Blue Screen of Death randomly lately. Would this PSU work with this setup: https://www.amazon.com/EVGA-WHITE-Warranty-Supply-100-W1-0500-KR/dp/B00H33SFJU/ref=sr_1_2?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1499139936&sr=1-2&keywords=psu?
Maybe I'll forget about the DVD drive and upgrade the PSU.

And yeah I know my budget is super low but it's all I can afford at the moment. As for performance, I plan on playing pretty casually once in a while so hopefully this fits the bill. Thanks again!

all that parts should cost 550 before taxes and rebates, and that's without a windows key.

but you could also just buy a pre-built and put a 470 in it along with a new psu.

As this person specified that PSU should be good. I that your best buy link was Canadian so here is a Canadian amazon link to almost identical PSU. https://www.amazon.ca/EVGA-WHITE-Warranty-Supply-100-W1-0500-KR/dp/B00H33SFJU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1485987043&sr=8-1&keywords=power+supply

u/KhaosKat · 2 pointsr/buildapc

If you can buy from Amazon, get this Crucial BX100 instead. It's a vastly superior SSD.

The Tacens doesn't have a very good reputation either. A servicable, inexpensive PSU from Amazon would be the EVGA 500W. It's a lower quality unit than I would normally recommend for your build, but it's better than either of the other two. A better quality unit, though more expensive, is the SuperFlower GoldenGreen 450 HX.

Edit: I don't speak or read Spanish, so I hope these parts are actually available :)

u/MonkeyMaster64 · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

Scared shitless of frying my parts so I'm going with this for a PSU:http://www.amazon.com/EVGA-Continuous-Warranty-Supply-100-W1-0500-KR/dp/B00H33SFJU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1457828249&sr=8-1&keywords=500+W
I do think I'll be OCing the G3258, maybe try for 4GhZ.

u/sk9592 · 2 pointsr/buildapc

A 500W EVGA power supply is reasonably priced at $35 and good enough for nearly any budget and midrange build:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00H33SFJU

You can bring it over to your next build when you upgrade.

u/nicking44 · 2 pointsr/techsupport

I'm no expert with PSUs so this is just my opinion. but if you're willing to put a bit more money into it EVGA makes some good cheap PSU for about $60 (USD) new

but here's 1 for about $40 EVGA 500 W1 that comes with a 3 year warranty

u/ProgressoSoupCan · 2 pointsr/buildapc

I used to have the same 710 before I switched to a 1060, you will need a new psu. I would recommend this one , it is cheap and stays at 500w.

u/TeaJizzle · 2 pointsr/Civcraft

Looks pretty good for a budget PC, I'd look at spending $30 more on a r9 270 since it's quite a bit better.

Swap out the PSU for a similar quality 500w one and you'll have plenty of power for no extra cost.

If there's any way you can stretch to a cheap i5 it'll be well worth it as more games start utilizing multicores. It's another $60 but if you can't do another $90 then I'd go for the graphics card upgrade instead.

u/hiyalll1 · 2 pointsr/nvidia

Yeah, you should upgrade. I think the overall minimal is 400watts for being the standard but for you, I would just get a 600 watt. You can get some cheap name brand power supplys on Amazon.EVGA 500 W1, 80+ WHITE 500W, 3 Year Warranty, Power Supply 100-W1-0500-KR, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00H33SFJU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_nx5mDbF3WQ7HR

u/Trey5169 · 2 pointsr/buildapc

> Seems like a unbelievable price to performance return point.

It really is, ever since AMD released Ryzen 1000 series, Intel's been feeling the heat. Well priced products that perform great is always good for competition.

As far as cases, I've been eyeballing this one because it has good cooling, with an acceptable price. Only real drawback is that it doesn't have a slot for an optical disk drive. Coolermaster has one with an ODD, but it isn't sold in the USA.

You may be able to re-use your case, unless it's from a prebuilt computer (particularly Dell / Alienware) your new board should fit in it just fine.

I was going to recommend This mATX case, but decided against it because I don't think your video card will fit. If you've got a stubby / short 1060 it might work, but I wouldn't bet on it.

This case is the cheapest case I can find that I'm confident will fit everything you have. $40ish.

8 GB RAM is what you need if you're gaming. 4 GB will bottleneck. If you get a 2X4 GB combo now, you can upgrade to 16 GB later with an additional 2X4 GB kit. In the meantime, look up how to take advantage of "Dual Channel RAM" on your motherboard. Also, make sure you get 3000mhz RAM, the speed makes a considerable difference on AMD CPUs.

2X4GB (8 GB total): [link] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0157UPYZ8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_WXmiDbH8KM7MB). You can select 2X8GB (16 total) if you want, but you don't need it for most games now, and if you prefer older games anyhow, it's a waste of your budget.

If you're going to splurge on anything in your new build, I highly recommend it being your PSU, especially since your old PSU likely killed your motherboard. A modular PSU will look much more tidy, since you can unplug cables that you don't need. I personally trust Corsair's RM series, though the lowest wattage (cheapest) one is still $130: Link.

If that's too much, or if your case doesn't have a Window and aesthetics don't matter, and old 500 watt PSU will do fine. 600 watts if you want some breathing room. Keep a look out for anything with a 3-5 year warranty from the manufacturer (look on their website for this info, don't trust Amazon); those are typically built better and are less likely to fail.

This is the cheapest PSU that I'd personally recommend. 500 Watts is fine for what you have, I think 450 watts is pushing on the "too low" side though.

Edit: All my links are ugly, give me a few minutes to tidy up.

Edit of edit: links tidied up. Also, 450 watts, not $450. (Near the end.)

u/Moyer_guy · 2 pointsr/buildapc

If you buy a used one make sure it has some sort of quality certification. Something like a "80 plus bronze" just as an example.

To be honest though new power supplies are not expensive but they are something you do NOT want to cheap out on. It's the source of power for ALL of the parts in your computer and a shitty power supply can ruin everything. Something like [this](https://www.amazon.com/EVGA-WHITE-Warranty-Supply-100-W1-0500-KR/dp/B00H33SFJU/ref=sr\_1\_2?keywords=power+supply&qid=1562432520&s=gateway&sr=8-2](https://www.amazon.com/EVGA-WHITE-Warranty-Supply-100-W1-0500-KR/dp/B00H33SFJU/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=power+supply&qid=1562432520&s=gateway&sr=8-2) will work for a decent build and has a 80 plus certification. Something like [this](https://www.ebay.com/itm/Supermax-400-Watt-ATX-PC-Computer-Desktop-Power-Supply-SATA-20-24-NEW/283470277822?hash=item4200252cbe:g:TuEAAOSwE9lZsbr1](https://www.ebay.com/itm/Supermax-400-Watt-ATX-PC-Computer-Desktop-Power-Supply-SATA-20-24-NEW/283470277822?hash=item4200252cbe:g:TuEAAOSwE9lZsbr1) I wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole.

u/Betrayyal · 2 pointsr/pcmasterrace

I think I'd need at least 500W to be on the safe side - the PC has an i5-6400 and a 750ti. So I'd rather have more than less when it comes to the PSU. With the prebuilt I have, the PSU is at the top of the case.

There was a video someone made on replacing the PSU for this particular PC. But the only other question I have, I guess, would be if any of these PSUs are safe to use and a reliable when it comes to stability?

u/Daedus · 2 pointsr/pcgaming

You don't have to spend an arm and a leg on a PSU to get one that isn't going to completely fail you or damage your other, more expensive parts. Amazon has the EVGA 500w for $37.48. It's a low-cost option that won't damage the goods. Check the JonnyGuru site for reliable reviews on power supplies and see for yourself.

Go with this PSU if you want to save $70. A PSU rated at 500W is plenty for your build. The only downside is that it isn't modular and the cables are clunky. But unless you're buying 'semi modular' or 'full modular', that's the cable management you'll have chosen.

Noob here. I picked up an old HP A6620f tower for free recently, trying to run some basic-ish Steam games like SpinTires, Car Mechanic Simulator, and my old Flight Simulator X on my 1080p samsung TV via HDMI. Cheaper is better as I'm still a student w/ limited funds.

Current Stock Specs:

  • 2.5GHz Intel Pentium E5200 Dual Core Processor
  • 4GB 832MHz DDR2 SDRAM ( 4x 1GB sticks)
  • 128MB (shared) Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3100
  • 7200RPM 500GB HD
  • IPIBL-LB Motherboard
  • Windows Vista
  • 250W PSU

    Planned upgrades:

  • EVGA 500W white PSU for $38
  • used GTX 550ti from r/HardwareSwap ~$30
  • OR used 750ti ~$60 (not sure if this is worth the upgrade considering my CPU/RAM bottleneck)

These parts should get me up and running at least, as of now I can't even use the computer because I have no VGA compatible monitors. I did consider cards such as the gtx560/570 but their large dimensions meant they might interfere with the connecting point for the SATA data cables on the motherboard. After these two things I might throw in a used Q9550 core 2 quad for ~$35 to tide me over until I can get the $$ together for a proper build.

What say you, enlightened ones? How did I do?

ya it would wreak your laptop for the GPU to run off of it so you would need a power supply to power the GPU only in very rare cases would the GPU run of your laptop's power and not wreak the thing.
(ex: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00H33SFJU/ref=s9_acsd_top_hd_bw_b4sE4_c_x_2_w?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=merchandised-search-3&pf_rd_r=S64ZHD0G24ZVGS4GYQDD&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=7e75590d-4a69-5772-b319-56dff81b4149&pf_rd_i=1161760 or a smaller one IF you only need a small amount of power to run the card)

I just suggested this to someone else: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00H33SFJU/ref=ox_sc_act_title_4?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1

However run your spec through a calculator to see what kind of watts you need. https://outervision.com/power-supply-calculator

I would also suggest getting a better processor. This one is only 10 more dollars and quite a bit better for instance: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009O7YORK/ref=crt_ewc_img_dp_8?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

The PSU I have is specifically this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00H33SFJU/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Would this be okay to use for the build?

u/BWANT · 1 pointr/techsupport

I have already packed everything away, I ordered a motherboard speaker so I'm waiting on that.

I basically sat the motherboard on a wooden table, plugged in the 20+4 and the 4 pin CPU cable. The CPU and heatsink were also installed, and the heatsink fan cable was plugged into the motherboard. I took out one of the RAM chips so that only one RAM chip was in the #1 RAM slot. Aside from that, I just had the monitor plugged into the onboard VGA. I jumped the power switch with a screwdriver, the CPU fan started spinning but nothing else happened. I then switched the RAM to the other stick and tried it again. No change.

This is my PSU:

However, when I plugged it all in and turned it on - nothing. not even a light, no fans on the power supply, no nothing. I am pretty sure that everything is plugged in correctly ( I followed this guid ) and I am wondering if you have any idea what could have gone wrong.

Oh, cool, 344w listed. With a 580 I would get a minimum 500w supply, because at some point you're likely going to overclock.

I found a 80+ white EVGA for $31 on Amazon.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00H33SFJU/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1493763883&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=EVGA+500+W1%2C+80%2B+WHITE+500W%2C+3+Year+Warranty%2C+Power+Supply+100-W1-0500-KR&dpPl=1&dpID=51PiQrWaNjL&ref=plSrch

Has loads of good reviews. 40a on the 12v rail. Doesn't appear to be anything horrible about it from what I'm seeing. Obviously double check me to ensure it has the proper power pinout for the GPU, it should, but verify! It's not modular and isn't higher rated, and uses non Japanese capacitors. Then again $31...

Also, do you need 16gb ram? If you're gaming you should be fine with 8gb. Obviously if you're running lots of programs the more ram the better. I have an RX 480 and 8gb ram and a Run a Benq 144ghz 1080 monitor and have 0 issues running modern games maxed out.

It appears Partpicker may not have had the exact power supply listed, to be exact, it's this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00H33SFJU/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The SSD I pulled out of my laptop and gave the laptop back it's original HDD since I won't be using it as much anymore. I kinda regret not grabbing a 4TB harddrive to just have that covered once and for all, but oh well. I have another 1TB HDD laying around I might throw in there.

The thing with Fallout troubles me. My last machine handled it fine on high settings, and if I remember correctly I actually played it on ultra and just had occasional slowdowns. Same graphics card.

I've checked into selling the graphics card a bit and I'm a bit boggled by what I've found - A bunch of places have it listed at a surprisingly high price, around $190 or higher and even higher still. But other places it's basically worthless. Here's an ebay auction nearing completion: http://www.ebay.com/itm/SAPPHIRE-Vapor-X-HD5770-1G-GDDR5-VDI-HDMI-Displayport-Video-Card-/332273385901?hash=item4d5d0981ad:g:XNkAAOSwblZZJ3zJhave Is this just some places fishing for people who don't look before they leap? Seems strange. I'm guessing I'd be getting eBay value for it if I sold it.

I've installed all the drivers and updates for the machine as far as I know. I suppose it's possible something is still lagging behind software wise. Maybe even the newer Windows 10 is more demanding or less smooth with some things.

BTW, thank you for you all your help. If I hadn't come here I probably would have got that original mobo I posted and been stuck in 2013 for the next few years :D

Yes it is a rapid shutdown, and the fact that some other games like Witcher 3(I mention it because it's the game that I have played the most and it is considerably demanding) run perfectly fine makes me think it is not a hardware related problem.

Your video card draws ~116W (~10A@12v) and NVIDIA Recommends at least a combined total (3.3v 5v and 12v) 400W PSU.

Your motherboard from your Gateway DX4860 requires an ATX compliant power supply, but since the newer EPS standard is backwards compatible you should probably look at an EPS PSU for a bit of future proofing.

This EVGA 500W PSU is 80Plus Certified (At least 80 percent efficient at full load) And is ATX/EPS12V compatable and has 40A available on the 12V rail.

more edits

Your 550Ti, as you probably know, requires a supplemental 6-pin PCI power adapter that must be present on the PSU. The PSU I recommended above has an 6+2 pin PCI Power adapter, just brake-away the 2 extra pins and it will fit in your 550Ti. Same with your motherboard which requires a 4 Pin P4 power connector. This PSU has an 4+4 pin EPS connector. Just brake away the other 4 pins and it will fit your motherboard just fine

And here's a nice PSU calculator for future use

Source: I've done IT for the past few years, and done dozens of computer purchases/builds.

Notes: I don't buy AMD or ATI unless it's an extreme budget build. I don't buy off-brand because I've had parts break and then not have an RMA available; I've had good experience and RMA support with Corsair and EVGA. You don't really need a CD/DVD drive; you can install Windows from a USB key, but if you're unsure, CD/DVD drives are like $15. If you go with Intel/nVidia Maxwell, you won't really need a >500W PSU.

I don't like to skimp on computers much because, economically, if you're spending even 5-10% of your time waiting for your computer and you earn $10-25/hr, $1000 is paid for in somewhere between 2000-250 hours of use, yet the computer will last at least 3-5 years.

Looking for a sub-80$ PSU, my 'advertised' wattage on PCpartpicker is 391W, so I want something 500-600W rated.

I'm moving to the EU in two years' time, so that is important to me. When I do move, what do I have to change, if anything? Some of the PSUs under consideration:

Solid build.

But you might want to consider not getting a Z97. Try to find a better deal on something else. You don't need it but if you can't it's fine to keep it cause it is a nice deal.

GPU will be suffice for what you want it for. Good price too.

Maybe this PSU to save 10 bucks.

Ok cool. When I bought the GPU I got this power supply. Would this one be fine? I tried to make sure to get one that was 80+

u/48-Cobras · 1 pointr/buildapc

Sorry, I worded a lot of this wrongly for I was quite rushed. I also left out some info for fear of the text box disappearing when I left my tab since I'm using my mobile device atm since I'm away from my desktop.

The power supply is the EVGA 500 W1, 80+ WHITE 500W, which was one that EVGA reccomended after I used the tool they have for picking which one to use, but I'll also look into the one you selected since it seems to be decent.

When I said "plug into my Alienware," I meant the graphics card because, not lying, I used to plug my monitor into the Intel graphics card instead because I didn't understand that that HDMI port was the wrong one. This time, I meant that I don't know how my case works and whether the tower/case comes with a way to plug in a DisplayPort cord since I know that DVI-D and HDMI don't allow 144hz.

I'm strictly Nvidia, sorry, but I'm not into AMD. Also, I want to try out ShadowPlay (I currently use DxTory) and the GTX 555 sadly doesn't support that. I know AMD has amazing products, but I am the type of person that sticks with what they're used to unless something different is so much better that it would totally blow my mind (why I switched from iCancer to Android phones (the OnePlus 3T is such a phenomenal phone for such a low price, like woah)).

That whole optimization thing was something from a long time ago that I don't quite remember, but I think he said something along the lines of having to mess around with the processor or something to get the most out of the RAM I installed. Idk, I just know I took the old RAM sticks out and replaced them, turned my PC on, and it said I had 16 GB, so I was happy (although Chrome uses a good 30-50% depending on how many running tabs I have).

Also, I'm not 100% about the power supply I currently have. I just know the unit is probably about twice the size of an Xbox 360 power supply unit, if not 1.5x bigger.

Oh, and lastly, with the SSD partition or whatever it's called, I just know that it is the stock that it came with, so I think it's just an internal HDD. I would actually love to get an SSD for Windows and applications to work faster and speed up copying times, but I don't think I'll spend money on that yet. I'll probably upgrade that once I do a full upgrade to my PC, processor and everything. I'll probably do that in 3-5 years time or whenever 4K replaces 1080p in the gaming standard and 120 fps becomes the new basic benchmark for PC and even console gaming if the peasants decide to actually put effort into making their gaming experience more than just mediocre. Although mouse and keyboard will always beat controllers unless you're talking about Rocket League since that's a bit easier on controller.

So yeah, thanks for the extra help and listening to my elementary knowledge in the field of PC gaming rigs. Other than the AMD vs Nvidia change, do you think you can change anything from my change list that could potentially help my rig last for even more years to come?

I appreciate the advice, though was doing some hunting and this MOBO sort of jumped out to me as appearing very good, thoughts?

I actually just made a post about getting a cheaper PSU! Does this appear to be a good option?

u/Penguin_Pilot · 1 pointr/AskTechnology

Your 450W is probably fine. The 970 lists 500W as the minimum, but the rest of your system is pretty low power. The FX-6300 is not a very power hungry CPU, and a link to your actual motherboard model would be helpful, but only a little. It's a small board, and they don't consume much. You should be maxing out at <400W, and you should be running your PSU between, oh, say, 60% and 85% load (it's fuzzy, and newer PSUs have wider peak efficiency curves than older supplies for the most part) at all times so it runs most efficiently. If it's running too far under load or too close to its max load, your PSU is losing efficiency and running hotter and wasting electricity, and wearing out faster as a result. Many newer, higher end supplies, like EVGA's Gold- and Platinum-certified models, can even maintain peak efficiency up to 95% of their max output - we don't know your actual power supply model.

Note, if shopping for these, that their efficiency certifications apply within their peak efficiency curve - not above or below it. Therefore, most supplies that are advertised as something along the lines of "80+% efficiency" means they run that efficiently between somewhere around 60%, and somewhere around 85%, of their max output - so, roughly, between 270W and 380W on a 450W supply (and even 400W is not far above it).

If you are dead set on upgrading, you'd be best suited not putting one in with a much higher capacity unless you're going to be upgrading more on your system to more power hungry components or adding a second video card in SLI (which is losing software support as time goes on and not many people would recommend). I would not shop for more than a 600W PSU, or you're wasting your money twice over - once in buying an overkill power supply, and again in wasted electricity on your utility bill every month.

I would not say that your 450W is plenty or more than enough, but I would say a decent 450W PSU is correct for your system. I don't see a reason for you to replace it.

As a side note, you may want to check that your motherboard actually has a PCI-e 3.0 slot to use with the 970, or your motherboard could be slowing your graphics card down pretty hard. Prebuilt systems like that are usually not made with upgradability in mind - they usually contain the minimum specs for the included components, as anything else would be a waste of money.

If you do the install and find you really need the new PSU, or you're just not confident without the upgrade and want it regardless, here are two I'd recommend: 500W and 600W. You are almost certainly fine with the 500W model, but the 600W is still a good pick for you, and will allow for future major system upgrades. The 600W model also has an equivalent that's semi-modular for an extra $5, if you want easier cable management. EVGA's PSUs are extremely robust and absurdly reliable, and yes I'm shilling, because their products, warranties, and support are top notch. And they'll actually hold up consistently to whatever they're rated for.

u/Wh0xE1se · 1 pointr/buildapc

Well if you want a new gpu you definitely need a bigger psu. 300w isn't much these days even with the more power efficient cards we have. I'd recommend this 500w EVGA one for $30 and as for a GPU you could pick up a RX570 for $200.

u/ArtistEngineer · 1 pointr/AskElectronics

Hello, I've worked with artists on similar projects and I think that I understand what you are asking for.

There are some good answers here, but I think you need to clarify your vision a bit more as there is some ambiguity in your specs and this can mislead people.

Sometimes it helps to specify what you want, instead of suggesting the solution. e.g. you say "LEDs" but you want "white lights and coloured gels".

LEDs are mono-colour. There are devices which combine several LEDs called an "RGB LED", which combines Red, Green and Blue, and this will give you a white-ish colour when you switch on all the LEDs on at once. It wouldn't make sense, from a technical point of view, to switch all the LEDs on and then use a gel to change the colour. Most likely, you'd want to adjust the relative balance

The good thing is that you can buy strips of RGB LEDs for a fairly low price these days and they're easy to control from an Arduino, as people have suggested. This would be the easiest way to go as it's almost a ready to go solution and there are loads of examples.

e.g. https://www.adafruit.com/category/183

If you want bright white, then you would want to look at a circuit which switched on, say, banks of halogen lights or 12V white LED bulbs. e.g. http://www.ledkia.com/uk/buy-g4-led-bulbs/578-g4-15w-led-bulb-12v.html This is certainly more complicated as you'd be looking at custom circuitry.

Next up is your power consumption.

Your image shows 13 columns, with 12 rows per column and you said up to 12 LEDs per bar. That's roughly 2000 LEDs. Each RGB LED unit consumes about 0.25Watts at medium brightness. Therefore you need 0.25W x 2000 = 500 Watts of power.

But that's only if you were to switch on every single LED at full brightness. If you don't, then you only need a fraction of this. This is a worst case scenario. Reduce the number of lights per bar, and your power requirements will go down accordingly.

Say you use 12V, so you would need 500W / 12V = 41Amp power supply. e.g. a PC power supply like https://www.amazon.co.uk/EVGA-100-W1-0500-K3-500W-Power-Supply/dp/B00H33SFJU The spec for this power supply says, "Supporting 40A on a single +12V rail".

But I think most of the RGB addressable strips need 5V.

So you'd need 500W / 5V = 100A power supply. This is a lot of current for a single power supply, and you'd need several 5V power supplies. e.g. You can have one power supply for column.

e.g. https://www.adafruit.com/product/658

What are you talking about?

u/captain_carrot · 1 pointr/PcMasterRaceBuilds

Hey bud, I took a look at your computer and the internal PSU, as far as I could find all the information online. You'll want another PSU like this one here. It's inexpensive and it's the current one I have in my build, works very well. Less than $35 too, so if you're trying to stay under a budget of $300 then you still have over $250 for a graphics card.

If you decide to go down that route, and get, say, an RX570, you'll be looking at a total cost of ~$240. You'll have to remove your old power supply and all it's wiring, install the now power supply, and re-route the new power supply's cables to all your components. It's not hard to do, it's pretty much plug-and-play once you identify which wires go where. With that and the new graphics card, you'll be good to go.

OR, if you decide you'd rather go the 1050ti route, all you'll have to do is plug in the new graphics card and presto, you're done. No need to mess with power stuff. And you're only in $120.

Hope that all helps!

ah cool, thanks. - For comparison, The Gtx 660 has a TDP of 140W and the GTX 970 has a TDP of 145W. It seems as if a GTX 970 would work off the bat without you needing to upgrade your PSU.

However, if you do feel like getting a new PSU - My suggestion in your price point (based on what I can see on Amazon.com, I'm from the UK so not so familiar with pricing or good PC part shops in the US) the $60 Modular Corsair CX500 is a good shout. I myself have used both the Corsair CX600 and CX750 myself, and am currently using the Corsair RM850 at the moment.

Of course, Corsair isn't the be all, end all of PSU's, but they're the ones I've a lot of experience with and have had a positive experience with. EVGA and Coolermaster do great PSU's too. This one from EVGA and is $40 and more than meets your power requirements. It isn't modular, however, which means more cable clutter (though makes no performance difference as far as I am aware)

Hey man, I guess you are looking for a 300 watts for not paying the big bucks eh? :/. So here are my two cheap recommendations under 70$:

1.https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00H33SFJU/ref=twister_B00NCZND2C?_encoding=UTF8&th=1
2.http://www.parallelminer.com/product/hp-750-watt-power-supply-kit-for-gpu-mining-platinum-94-zec-dash-eth/

Option 1 is a common computer PSU which would be able to run your card for a big 40$. Option 2 is less common but amazing for mining, It's a 750w Platinium power supply from hp, really cheap for the power and modular up to a couple GPUs!

Hello!

After some reading (mostly of /u/JDM_WAAAT's posts) I decided to build my own (instead of buying one). I used the $135 build as a base with some modifications (mainly, case).

Goal: Server with UnRAID, will run Plex with a couple of transcodes (no more than three, but I need the transcodes for subtitles), maybe to learn about VMs on my own, and as a place to keep my data centralized (and easy to back up SOMEWHERE ELSE).

CPU X3450 - $24.00

Mobo X8SIL-F - $44.99

RAM 2x4GB PC3-10600E - $39.95

CPU Cooler - $10

PSU EVGA 500 W1 - $40

Case Cooler Master N400 - $60

I bought two WD EasyStores last weekend that I intend to shuck, and I will look in BuildaPCSales for some good SSDs for a cache pool.

My main question is: any other motherboard recommended that would support HDDs and SSDs? The final goal would be three SSDs (one unassigned just for plex, two for a cache pool) and six HDDs (2x8GB parity, 4x8GB storage). As is right now the build is $219, I'm willing to push up to $250, or $300 if necessary, unless what I want is a wild dream and need to learn more before making these kinds of decisions.

They have a slightly older model The 600 Watt B1, it's 80+ bronze certified, and only 48 dollars. Leaves room for future upgrades, and should last you quite a while as well. Or there is a slightly cheaper 500 watt W1, 80+ white certified. Either one would be a good unit, and price.

Prebuilt machines are almost always specifically manufactured to only have the parts/specs/connections necessary to run the parts it comes with. The fact that your motherboard has a PCIE slot probably means that there was an "upgraded" package for your system with a better video card, OR the video card it came with did not require additional power; like the 750ti, and 950s

That being said, yes you DO need another power supply... luckily though you can get some pretty cheap ones that are more than "good enough" for your system. THIS one is $35, and should do just fine.

Sorry for the delay. Didn't have time to test last night but I got it done today. I installed an RX 560 in an Optiplex 3010 and tested it. It worked just fine with my Windows 10 test image. I chose a 560 because it pulls all its power directly from the PCIe slot, which I measured at ~60 watts peak. That's far above the 25-35w limit I've seen on some of these so I'd say you're good to go. Grab a good quality ~500W PSU and throw a used RX 570/580 in there. Keep an eye on those temps if you're going to close the side panel though-- RX cards get hot!

Cheers-- and happy bargain hunting!

P.S. - This EVGA PSU fits that case with no modifications. (tip: remove the optical drive and use the empty 5.25" bay for cable managment) Optiplexes make great budget gaming machines if you can get around the quirks!

Sure. It seems to have just 3 reviews so take a calculated guess of whether those reviews are real. I just realised that you could also use a computer ATX supply as well. They have a 5V rail that can supply much higher currents (upto 20A or so). Maybe something like this. This would serve this project and a couple of others as well since it has a 12V and 3.3V rail. It is more expensive but these supplies are tough as nails and very reliable. Also the 60mA seems to be the maximum current. The LED would still give ample amount of light for as low as 30mA but its best to have a supply rated more than what the strip can consume.

Hello there,

I'm currently looking to upgrade my motherboard from a stock motherboard of a Dell Optiplex 3010 (front, do not currently have a back-facing image) without having to purchase a new case. Is there anything that will fit that you guys know about?

As per other hardware, I currently have a 3rd Generation Intel Core i5-3470, an EVGA 500W Power Supply, and a Gigabyte Geforce GTX 1050 Ti GPU.

I understand that my CPU is an older model, and that some modern motherboards won't be compatible with it, so if you're trying to help me out with this and can't find a board that will support my old CPU, feel free to suggest something other than that. My current end-goal is to have a fully-upgraded rig inside of this Optiplex 3010 case (by almost any means necessary), and having a newer CPU to go with a shiny new motherboard doesn't seem all too bad.

My budget for this hypothetical motherboard would probably cap at $130. Would probably be looking at a budget cap of $300 for both the Board and CPU.

Thank you very much!

Anyway, quick amazon US search (amazon isn't even the cheapest place for a lot of these parts) shows that all those parts are worth maybe 460 dollars (plus a case and windows which you can get for free) they also don't list any of the models/brands so I assume that means they are terrible, on the amazon search I get legit brands like EVGA for the PSU. See for yourself: https://www.amazon.com/MSI-GAMING-GTX-960-2G/dp/B00SAYDRP8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1473949393&sr=8-1&keywords=Nvidia+GTX+960+2GB+GDDR5+Video+Card

You said you don't have a lot of money so I would definitely just build your own, other people have linked to subreddits that can tell you what components are best for the money for what you're going to be using it for, wouldn't be surprised if you could be playing CS:GO at 300 fps on a 450 dollar computer. When you buy a pre-built you are basically paying the manufacturer an extra 30% for them to build it for you, which is like 150 dollars in this case, for what would take you a couple of hours, idk anyone who's time is worth that much, you also lose the ability to save money by cutting costs in certain areas, you don't need a sick GPU to play CS:GO afaik for example.

Should I get this Sentey 725W or this EVGA 500W for a Gigabyte R9 280x & overclocked G3258

u/Wisconsin_Kunz · 1 pointr/buildapc

From my other post on /r/pcmasterrace, it seems the big issue was the power supply. It was recommended that I potentially step it up to a 500W PSU. Hopefully everything else would be okay!

u/DyLaNzZpRo · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

I take you mean this?

If so, I'd replace it. It's fine for lower-end builds but it's not too good of an idea to throw such a demanding card at it - cheaper PSUs that are considered 'decent' are fine up until you reach the part where you'll be running it on heavy loads, at that point you'll want to replace it.

u/igotpetdeers · 1 pointr/buildapc

What is the difference between these 2 psus?

EVGA 500 B1 80+ BRONZE, 500W

EVGA 500 W1 80+, 500W 100-W1-0500-KR

u/kerimk2 · 1 pointr/buildapc

Thanks for the speedy reply dude. Love the analogy. I still have a remaining 12gb of unfried Ram so Could I still use that? Also would a PSU like [this] (http://www.amazon.com/EVGA-Continuous-Warranty-Supply-100-W1-0500-KR/dp/B00H33SFJU/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1464990927&sr=1-1&keywords=psu) work fine? The cost is significantly less is why I am wondering.

Lastly, I don't just play CSGO haha, although I do play way too much of it. I also play a bunch of normal games like Overwatch and the total war franchise. Do I have any options for a low cost GPU that would be able to run those games at mid to high at 60fps? Could I reuse my GPU from my burnt computer, because I don't think it was affected, and was sort of running those games. it was an AMD Radeon HD 5870.

Thanks again for the quick response though. Appreciate it.

Hi I have EVGA 500 W PSU. I'll take some pics in morning.

I had it in a build with an r9270x. I replaced it with a Rosewill capstone 650 because I thought it wasn't enough to power the GPU. But it turned out the GPU was the culprit and I had to RMA that.

u/jmniles · 1 pointr/buildapc

The short gigabyte model would probably fit the best in your case. You might run into a power supply problem wherein your current PSU doesn't have an available 6 pin cable. You should check that you have that 6 pin cable before going any further as nearly all GPUs are going to need at least that. If you don't have the 6 pin cable then you are going to have to buy a GPU that doesn't use one(will probably be a low end gtx 950 or a gtx 750ti), or buy a power supply that does have an available 6 pin(most name brand PSUs do have a 6 pin for GPU). If you do decide to upgrade your PSU along with your GPU, a pretty common upgrade pairing because of the power requirements from modern GPUs, then an 80 PLUS certified model from evga would work very well(http://www.amazon.com/EVGA-Continuous-Warranty-Supply-100-W1-0500-KR/dp/B00H33SFJU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1462315006&sr=8-1&keywords=evga+power+supply). You can usually find a good PSU on sale for $35-40 on r/buildapcsales, and getting rid of the stock PSU from your current computer is a good idea by itself. Sorry about adding more things and making your simple question more complex but I feel that it's best if you know all the information and can then make an informed decision.

I wanted the links to go straight to Amazon, but I realize now that it's just 1 more click through PCPartPicker. I plan to use PCPartPicker for formatting form now on!

I don't have any attachments to the specs here, I will take your suggestion for the CPU and MOBO (will I need a fan for CPU?)

I was trying to match form factors and sizes with PSU and cases, with this information I'll be sure not to limit my options. I will likely find a PSU that has prime to get everything at the same time and save on shipping. e.g. EVGA 100-W1-0500-KR

I will be connecting the computer via ethernet cable.

u/Heartless_Carpet · 1 pointr/buildapc

Without the use of an adapter, you would NOT be able to use this power supply. It has only 1 six-pin PCI connector. (270x requires 2 six-pins)

Also, I wouldn't try using such a budget no-name brand power supply with a computer you want to keep around for a while. That particular PSU has some questionable reviews. And upon disassembly, some questionable electrical hardware

Edit: Maybe consider buying a rock-solid ~700+ watt power supply? They're the kind of item you can use for a VERY long time (through multiple builds - I.E. this has a ten year warranty). Otherwise, potentially a somewhat budget option from EVGA? I've been using the 430 watt variant of that PSU in a computer that's on 24/7 with no complaints for ~6 months now.

u/Hechtroll · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

Okay, update on the situation. I will be building it myself but I realized I ordered a PSU that is not good for a i7-8700k with a gtx 1070. I think it only supports Intel Haswell. I have a Coffee Lake CPU. Please tell me if it would be compatible for a i7-8700k paired with a gtx 1070. If not then ill try to return it to amazon and get a EVGA SuperNOVA 650 G3 even though it'll destroy my budget.

If you're playing with chips and stuff, a PC power supply is amazing because you can pick them up for basically no money and with some filtering have a decent supply. If you want to do anything that requires a significant amount of power its a fucking gift from god because for $40 new you can get half a kilowatt to do whatever you want with.

Less cost and will do the job. You shouldn't need anything more than this wattage wise unless you plan to do a lot more upgrading. You can always use a calculator such as [this] (http://www.coolermaster.com/power-supply-calculator/) if you are not sure of the wattage you need. Once you determine the wattage you need you have lots of options.

If you already have the windows disc then the Windows install is free. You can definitely built a gaming PC for $500. $400? Nah probably not. But, to be fair, they sell the consoles at a loss. But the one you build for 500m it will perform better than both consoles, but not by a lot. You'd have to be very picky with parts.

Case Mobo CPU Ram SSD for OS Storage Drive Graphics card [Power Supply] (http://www.amazon.com/EVGA-80PLUS-Certified-ATX12V-100-W1-0500-KR/dp/B00H33SFJU/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1414218841&sr=1-1&keywords=500watt+psu)

The CPU is good enough for the game you will be playing, the motherboard is good enough and more expensive ones sell you feature you don't need. The RAM will do you fine and is enough for any game you want and the GPU will be perfect for 1080p with 3GB of VRAM. For storage, go with a cheap 500GB HDD but I would certainly recommend an SSD for the future. The power supply will do you fine no matter what anyone else says, trust me (powers my R9 280X which is a LOT more power hungry).
I would recommend looking round Ebay, Facebook selling sites etc etc for any used components or 'starting points' with Ebay being the best bet in my opinion due to the massive amounts of sellers. If you see a 6600 or a 6600k for the same or less than on Amazon, snag it up and make sure to have a CPU cooler with it (stock will do you again, I have experience with 6600/6500 running on stock coolers and it's perfectly fine)

Sorry if the response looks rushed, I had a better one but I clicked something and it deleted :'(
Would love to hear about how the build goes, may your frames be high and temperatures at a low enough level!

EDIT BEFORE POSTING : 'Bomba' recommended an 8GB RX 470 - that's pointless for 1080p in my opinion and having a Pentium Dual core isn't something anyone would crave. I also have bad experience with Corsair PSUs but I haven't tried the 450W.

u/dnyank1 · -2 pointsr/buildapc

If you can't get a refund from the seller, I'd highly recommend either - a GTX 1650 ($160 new) - this will just slot right in, will work fine with the power supply and everything else in your system https://www.amazon.com/GIGABYTE-GeForce-Graphics-Windforce-Gv-N1650OC-4GD/dp/B07QHGKC2D/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=1650&qid=1570763173&sr=8-1

or an AMD RX570 ($120) https://www.amazon.com/XFX-Radeon-Graphics-Black-RX-570P427D6/dp/B06ZXY43VC/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=570&qid=1570763282&sr=8-2.

This AMD card will result in better performance, but will require an upgraded power supply (and some plug-and-play rewiring) like this to function - ($50) https://www.amazon.com/EVGA-WHITE-Warranty-Supply-100-W1-0500-KR/dp/B00H33SFJU/ref=sr_1_7?keywords=pc+power+supply&qid=1570763339&sr=8-7
