GTX 1050 Ti is the best in that price range but for a few extra bucks you'd be better off with a RX 470.

If you're willing to go up to $200 you can get a GTX 1060 or RX 480 which are MUCH better cards.

Ahhh, good 'ol LGA 1366, one of my favorite platforms of literally ALL TIME! You have a few options for upgrades definitely. I would recommend a Xeon x5670 as a great cheap CPU upgrade. You will also want a GPU upgrade, that old quadro FX is gonna be awful for any gaming, something like a GTX 1050 ti would be a great choice. You will also want some more RAM, upgrade that 4 GB to at least 8 GB. It will be DDR3 1066 or 1333 MHz most likely so get some of that. I actually run this exact CPU and GPU combination, a screenshot of my Xeon system here and it works very well for 1080p gaming. I also use it for 4k gaming with a bunch of older games, on my 4k TV.

Edit: Almost forgot! Also get a cheap 120 GB or 250 GB SSD! You may want to save a bit more money first though, these upgrades will be more than $150.

I have a computer hardware question. This might not be the IDEAL sub to ask, but I know there are many PC enthusiasts here.

I have a 6 year old gaming computer. It was pretty much top-of-the-line when I built it. I believe my GPU is my current bottle neck, and am considering replacing it. I'm wondering what the community would recommend for the upcoming 3.0 release, but something that wouldn't be completely overpowered for the rest of my components. I've been holding off on building a new PC until S42/SC are closer to release (which could still be years?)

I know nothing about the inner workings of a computer. My 14 year old son plays games on his all the time (mostly Steam). For Christmas 2014, I got him this. Would it make that much of a difference for him?

Also, sort of related, but not really. He said he needs a new XBox controller that he uses for his computer games (he broke his). He has an Xbox 360 that is old and he never plays on. $132 for an RX 460 is a very bad deal. You can get a 1050 Ti that will vastly outperform it for almost the same price. If you are willing to shell out 30 more dollars (after rebate), you can get an even bigger performance boost from an RX 470. Other than that, you should be good.

I recently switched from an older AMD Sapphire Radeon R7 265 to a more modern GeForce GTX 1050 Ti SC; Then followed my instructions from Part 2 (turn all graphic settings off / low, with draw distance set to "far") and on the Geforce there were still bullet trails! I'm guessing the drop pod indicators were the same way, as per your testing.

I don't know if it's particular to that video card, AMD graphic cards in general, or just that the card was on the low end for the game and so "couldn't do" some effects in some configurations.

I can definitely confirm this as I recently upgraded from a 635 to a 1050 TI and the difference is amazing. I was lucky enough to have some bday money saved up so it only costed me a little bit.

Double check when you buy it, but most should work fine. I have a 1050 ti SSC, and it doesn't require any external power input. Any of them should fit fine in that case, so I'm assuming you're talking about power supply.

Yes, there are a lot of different GPU brands and varieties within brands. Some things that vary between models are clock speed (some are slightly faster) and cooling (all of them should be fine in general in terms of thermals, some just have more fans or run a bit cooler or quieter, etc. -- which may also be necessary if things are clocked higher).

Personally, I really like EVGA -- they make high quality stuff and have great customer support. while personally id opt for a whole new build, not everyone has that kinda cash to just throw down so i'll throw my recomendations as far as what youve presented so far.

First: The PSU - dont buy cheiftech opt for a evga 700W bronze they can be had right now for $40.

I'm looking to buy a graphics card for my first PC build (which will happen in the next few months) because I got a relatively substantial amazon gift card. Literally the only game I play is Rocket League, and it's the only game I plan on playing. What is my best value option?

I don't have a 4k monitor (nor do I intend to get one) so I'm really not trying to run everything at max settings/max fps. I just want something that will run the game well enough on high settings.

That card won't be able to handle much. Valve Source games like CS and HL should run okay. WoW will run. Nothing demanding will run well on that.

My recommendation would be to upgrade that GPU with something newer. And since your HP desktop may or may not have extra PCI-E PSU cables, you're going to be limited to only the cards that draw their power from the PCI-E lane.

It's not really hard if you are handy. I followed a you tube build based on the case I used, a cooler master elite 130. People on r/buildapc are very helpful. Another great choice is buying a decent computer and upgrading. There is an i5 acer act 780 refurbished for 370 on newegg.com or brand new for 400 on amazon.com that can take a smaller gtx 1050 ti.

I'm trying to build a gaming PC that can run games such as GTA V at 60 FPS, 1080p, high settings. This is the current build I have. Of these two video cards, which would be better to fit my needs and what are the differences between the two.

Ask him to measure height & width of his power supply. Standard form factor is 85mm x 150mm. If that's true, you'll still need to stay with a smaller PSU in terms of length - which is fine because the lower wattage PSUs are shorter. He'll never need more than 350W. EVGA, Seasonic, and Corsair make good power supplies (although I've read Corsair CXM is the series to get).

I have no idea who makes the best 1050, but I have this EVGA 1050 ti and I'm very happy with it.

I'd say go for a 1050ti. It should easily get 60fps+ in minecraft. It definitely shouldn't bottleneck with your CPU and I'm 99% sure that it won't with your wife's either.

the good news is:

• there is room for a dual slot PCIe x16 full height card.
  
• there are two SATA ports (you can remove the dvd drive if you want, or convert it to USB) AND an M.2 SSD port.
  
  the bad news:
  
  
• the power supply is 180W. this is shockingly low.
  
• the power connector for the motherboard may interfere with long GPUs.
  
• the motherboard is of non standard size and layout.
  
  so from here the first problem is that the power supply is way too low for most cards. the minimum card you'd need would be along the lines of a 1050 or 1050ti, however the issue is the power supply. 180w on a system that probably pulls 140ish without a graphics card.
  
  you can get a used card, but i would not go an older generation than the 1050 because the power requirements would be too high. without changing the power supply i would look for a 1050 and hope that it does not cause any issues. i would specifically look for a short one, because of that potential power cable issue:

  that being said, you may need to end up changing the PSU anyway. but what i would do is atleast try a 1050 first and if you have problems, look into changing the power supply also.
  
  last word of advice: you will need to open the case and physically look to see that there is room for the card you want to put. often times in prebuilts the drive cages eat up valuable room.

  According to the seller, this motherboard does in fact have an open PCI-E x16 slot available. This makes things a bit easier. A discrete GPU is available, though with the current configuration, not a top-of-the-line one. I like the suggestion from /u/PapayaPies to get a GTX 1060; alas, that is not possible currently due to the underwhelming power supply.
  
  Cheapest, easiest solution: EVGA GTX 1050 Ti SC from Amazon for $140.49USD (plus S&H).
  While there are two cheaper options, I'd recommend the EVGA variant as my history with them has been rocksteady reliability (I still have a system built pre-i3/i5/i7 that runs on an EVGA motherboard and video card). I consider this option the cheapest and easiest as all that is required is the following:
  

1. Get card.
   
2. Power down computer.
   
3. Open chassis.
   
4. Insert card into available PCI-E slot.
   
5. Close chassis.
   
6. Connect display to new GPU.
   
7. Power on computer.
   
   While we could go with other options; they're more expensive and require a new power supply at the very least – adding not only $50 to $80 to the total cost after the video card; but time spent rewiring power connections, as well.
   
   It is important to note that this particular video card is bus-powered only; and does NOT need an additioal power cable running to it to perform its function.
   
   With this configuration, a reliable gaming experience in Overwatch and other games can be readily achieved with minimal downtime and risk to the components. I'm sure this is not the way some Redditors would do things; but again I remind you, we're trying to get him playing Overwatch as quickly and as cheaply as possible.
   
   Comments
   Whomever these sellers are that are selling “gaming computers” with just an APU and not a discrete GPU need to be punched in the babymaker. While I understand they're a business and trying to make money; they're flat-out lying about the capabilities of these machines. They're nothing more than office workstations with a fancy chassis. I'm sorry, /u/probartlett155, but I feel like you got scammed. :(
   Windows 10. It is also worthy to note that for some damn stupid reason Microsoft includes as part of its OS something called “Xbox Game DVR”. This comes ENABLED by default; and without an account with Xbox Live, requires you to edit the registry to disable. Why disable it? It is poorly coded and causes a significant drop in performance. In your situation, we need every drop we can get. Steam has a howto on disabling it via registry; but I'd wait to muck about in there until after the GPU has been installed and performance can be assessed (yes, I'm looking for trouble here, I know, I'm sorry).
   
   Recommendations
   If you find the above solution acceptable; then I would recommend going ahead and buying the video card and getting things going. I would NOT recommend spending any more money on this particular rig, though. Mosey on over to /r/buildapc and poke around a bit; start saving money for a newer gaming rig that you can call your own.

why do you feel you need to upgrade? what are your current limitation and wants?

Sure you have an old build but do you really require anything more at this stage? For 2013 that is an outstanding budget build and something I would stick with today.

I think I have a good idea of where you are coming from/what you need so I will do my best to explain. I'm going to guess here that you are experiencing less than stellar gameplay on new titles and want to play on smoothly on high settings.


Assuming the 960 is a 2GB card; CS:GO and other esports titles will see very minimal difference with any upgrades, reason being that do not require or utilize any of the extra VRAM memory on the GPU. Your core clock and cuda cores are fine, better than my PC so I do not see any reason for complaints here.

When it comes to newer titles like Dark Souls 3 which you mentioned you will need to either turn the settings down or replace your gpu with a 4GB card. That will allow you to turn up the setting and maintain solid framrate, the problem with the newer, bigger games is that they have more in the environment to load.

Your GPU is still great and high valued and you do not need any PC upgrades. However if what I said above holds true I would recommend the following moving forward.

Your CPU and Mobo are fine and not worth replacing, I wouldn't worry about the ram either, 8gb is fine and you don't need anymore than 12. You can add an SSD at anytime but that will just make loading faster, it would just be to install windows and run csgo off of which is not going to be worth it.

If I were you I would sell that oversized power supply to replace with a corsair 450w, and sell the gpu for a 1050ti. EVGA comes highly recommended

Not much has come out in the CPU market until recently so not many people would advise you jump into Ryzen or any of the new stuff now, and your anything else in your build is fine and would costs a lot to upgrade. IF you have a 2GB card your only problem is higher settings on new games

Found this one on Amazon and if you overclock it to 1777mhz then you can get 4k on most esports games (rocketeague, overwatch, csgo) however you said you wouldn't be running games on it. I found this from a simple Google search but id look a little bit more into it and try comparing to rx480 or rx580. The prices on the rx580 and rx480 are rising at the moment so beware try not to spend over 250 on those cards.

GPU for sure. All the other parts in a PC really depend on what the builder needs and their preferences, a GPU doesn't really depend on much (other than the processor of course, but not anything to consider when gifting). In a $500 budget, I'd say get him a GeForce GTX 1050ti. It should perform well under his budget and work with his parts well. Just make sure he doesn't accidentally buy a GPU for himself :).

And with that $20 I would highly recommend upgrading that CPU. You should really spend the vast majority of your money on the GPU and CPU (I think it is a mistake to spend more on your MOBO, case, and psu than your cpu). I think you could get an i5 in this build for sure if you get the gpu from amazon and find a less expensive mobo and psu (go with the 500 B from EVGA for great value if you don't mind non-modular).

Otherwise it looks like this is gonna be a great build!

Are you commited to spending 300-500 USD or is all you want 30-60fps in 1080p. Although I don't endorse gaming at under 60 fps if that's what you want you could get a 1050ti for 150 USD and play most games 1080p 60fps on max settings and more demanding games max settings at 45fps. The gtx 1070 is a high end gaming card destined for gaming in 1440p at above 60fps. If you don't have a 1440p or a 144hz monitor it may be a waste of money.

Id recommend a gtx 1050, this card does not require dedicated power. The one I have linked is the 4gb version, it is available in 3gb and 2gb variants also, I’d recommend 4 if your budget will stretch to it, but if not the 3gb version will play most games on medium settings. Dimensions: 5.7 x 1.5 x 4.4 inches (5.7 being the length, and 4.4 being height.) the height is what you need to watch out for here, you need to make sure you will have enough clearance to put on the side panel once the card is installed, I’m not sure if the dimensions are listed for the case but if not I would check it out before purchasing the card. Aside from that, it is a decent card and would be a significant upgrade from your current card.

I'd recommend getting a GPU like a Zotac or EVGA 1050 Ti. These, and other 1050 Ti models, don't require an additional power connector, which the power supply in your prebuilt may not have. You don't need a beefier GPU for Overwatch, it ran fine on the 750 Ti I used to have.

1. It varies. Ground Zeroes, Titanfall 2, The Witcher 3. V-Sync is on. Sometimes it drops from 60 to around 40 and quickly goes back up. Settings are high across the board.

So I'm looking at parts, and I think I'm leaning between these two:

EVGA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti SC (@ $184.99) and EVGA GeForce GTX 1060 3GB (@ $222.89)

There's a few differences based on the comparison at the bottom of the 1060's webpage.
The 1050 has 4GB compared to the 1060's 3GB.
The 1050 supposedly has a clock speed of 7,010 MHz vs the 1060's clock speed of 1,607 MHz, this just doesn't seem right?

What exactly is better about the 1060? Because right now I'm leaning towards the 1050.

That would be correct. I didn't want to spend the money on building my own unit, and according to the research I did, which apparently wasn't enough, I should be able to run FO4 with this rig. I guess that isn't correct.
