Check this out. I used it for quite some time and it works very well.

And with the release of 1.39, simulator battles was once again a populated playground of pilots.

I'll just leave this here:

As a flight sim enthusiast and also an owner of ED I feel I should warn you all of the poor quality of Saitek since they were purchased by Mad Catz. I have owned the X-45 as well as their Pro Flight rudder pedals. The X-45 was pre-Mad Catz and it lasted over 10 years. The Pro Flight pedals are Mad Catz and lasted 9 months. I will never buy Saitek again. My current setup is the Thrustmaster Warthog and CH Pedals. My squadmates all have CH products, and if I could do it all over again I would go with all CH and not the warthog. I love my warthog, but I have had to re-wire it with a saudering iron twice.

If you are interested in a quality hotas I suggest theses:

If you want something cheaper, just get a logitech 3d pro:

I recently found a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro at Goodwill for like $9 and it played xwing v tie fighter great. Only $32 for a new on on Amazon, https://www.amazon.com/Extreme-3D-Pro-Joystick-Windows/dp/B00009OY9U. From threads I looked up, looks to be one of the best budget sticks out there, especially for the xwing series.

u/silico · 10 pointsr/GameDeals

Pretty sure the Thrustmaster HOTAS X is the best cheapie hotas stick at $30-40 unless things have changed recently. I got one on eBay for $20 forever ago and really like it. Have not tried it on these SW sims though. The 3D Pro is also supposed to be nice for $20-30 if you don't want/need a hotas set-up.

u/AngryT-Rex · 9 pointsr/starcitizen

I feel like a lot of the perceived joystick-superiority-complex comes from people seeing joystick owners talking about stuff like the X-52pro (http://www.amazon.com/Saitek-X52-Flight-System-Controller/dp/B000LQ4HTS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1368513666&sr=8-1&keywords=x52+pro), which is obviously out of many people's desired price range.

But the fact of the matter is that something like this (http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Extreme-Joystick-Silver-Black/dp/B00009OY9U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1368513643&sr=8-1&keywords=joystick) will work just fine - in fact, they were giving some of those exact joysticks out as part of the recruit-your-friends promo, so they're definitely planning to make it playable with those. And at ~$25, its even significantly cheaper than a console controller.

So although us joystick-enthusiasts who want to build sim cockpits and use pedals and all that aren't going to be talking about the $30 joysticks, they are there and perfectly functional, so there is no reason that the general population of the game can't have them if they want.

Not to say you can't go the gamepad route if you'd like, just wanted it clear that going the joystick route doesn't need to have the high cost of entry that some people seem to be perceiving.

Depends on your budget.

I'd recommend this if your budget allows for it.

If not, the Logitech 3D Pro is the best stick for your money imo.

I'd recommend picking up pedals especially if you're into general aviation flying but definitely get a joystick as your first purchase. As far as yokes go, the lower end ones are generally not worth it and the next options are in the $400-500+ USD range. Some users are happy with their CH/Saitek yokes but I didn't have a great experience with them.

u/Miloshkavitch · 8 pointsr/Games

If you have HDD space to spare it might be worth it to partition ~30GB off and install/dualboot Windows. If you only want it for this, an old version would work just fine. Probably cheaper than buying a new computer too, but then again almost any hunk of junk that still works would probably be able to play this.

I found this joystick after a quick search.

u/Tomdanizer · 8 pointsr/starcitizen

The logitech 3D Pro is the one I've had for about 8-9 years now and it has always done well for me flying in the Battlefield series (BF2-BF4). I cannot offer a comparison to other joysticks as I have not owned any. But nonetheless, it seems to fit your price.

> Do I need a joystick

you do pretty much need to have a joystick, but nothing else is essential. A cheap joystick like this is more than good enough though, or this one which is a little more expensive but not a crazy price and comes highly recommended by a lot of people.

I'd say the learning curve's not too bad, you need to know a few basic principles of flight but nothing complex. If you go for FSX it has lessons which will take you from no-knowledge to being able to take-off, fly, and land the default planes pretty quickly, I don't know about X-Plane but I'd guess it probably has some tutorials too.

u/Ramp_Rat · 7 pointsr/redorchestra

sure, I'll copy/paste here:

The higher-end ones tend to be what's called a H.O.T.A.S (Hands On Throttle And Stick). essentially this is a packaged deal with a joystick and throttle quadrant, and is useful for not having to take your eyes (or hands) off the throttle and stick while flying. Some of these can be expensive like the Thrustmaster Warthog, considered the high end of the sticks. The issue with this as well, is it's modeled off a A-10 Warthog's inputs, so you'll also need to get rudder pedals as well since there is no Z-axis twist on the stick.
For more budget options, I have heard really great things about the T-16000 M. You can also buy the stick and throttle separately if you dont have the cash for both right now.

Another company is VKB, a Russian company but uses magnetic "MARS" sensors. I actually use their Black Mamba and love it, however the item has since been discontinued and the company itself is hard to get hold of. They currently have affordable sticks modeled on the German KG12 - flight stick used in BF109's and FW 190's (although no throttle quadrant with it). Available on Amazon its called Gladiator

Saitek makes several sticks, however they're in a transitioning period. They were just bought-out by Logitech and some people have complained about quality issues with their newer sticks and lack of customer support, so I'd only recommend them if you can get a great deal on a stick on sale, or possibly a used one for cheap. Their models are the X52 Pro, X-55, and X-65. I had the 52 Pro and never had any issues, but its one of those buy beware moments with them right now.

And then there's really affordable sticks that work fine too, such as the logitech extreme 3d pro and Thrustmaster T-Flight X. These are reliable sticks that lack some of the fancy things like buttons and dials for radiator management for example. I know guys who fly using these and love it.

Another thing that is highly recommended to get, but is not required to play the game, is called a Track IR. If you watch in my video, I'm swiveling my head back and forth to check my 6, and make sure theres no enemy aircraft diving on us. I'm not using the mouse, or any input to look around, rather I have a clip on my headset that uses IR sensors to turn my head in game without having to take my hands off the HOTAS. Here's a video of how it works. Again, not necessary to buy, but one of those things to hope to get down the road. There are free alternatives called Freetrack which uses a webcam, I think. I havent messed with that but I know a few guys who do use it and are happy with it.

I think thats a fairly decent summary. Feel free to PM with any questions, or check out our group's forums if you'd like to do some more research

> I use the keyboard and mouse

Yea, that's not going to fly. You need a flight stick to play fsx with any reasonable control. I picked this up at goodwill for 6 bucks and I'm very happy with it. When picking one out make sure that it rotates left and right for rudder control or your going to have a bad time.

u/ReddTor · 7 pointsr/flightsim

Buy one of these

Or these

Wait for the Steam sale on 23rd June(?) and get either FSX, X-Plane or Dovetail Flight School (or all of them).

Edit: Microsoft Flight Simulator is on sale now on Steam.

u/snashkille · 6 pointsr/starcitizen

If you want to try a joystick without shelling out a lot of money, I suggest the $35 Logitech Extreme 3D Pro. Its what I use and is an excellent starter stick. Cloud Imperium Games will be releasing their own HOTAS sometime, which is what I will upgrade to from the 3D Pro.

u/Mulletman262 · 6 pointsr/pcgaming

Just a basic HOTAS like this or or with pedals but you don't really need them. Actually all you really nned is something like this

u/poo-poo · 6 pointsr/pcmasterrace

http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Extreme-Joystick-Silver-Black/dp/B00009OY9U/ref=pd_cp_pc_3

Yeah I get the same issues. What's worse is I have the Logitech G27 wheel, and I'll fire up Euro Truck simulator and the game will choose the joystick. So then I'll swear at the stick and shove it in a box in a closet, only to get it out a week later.

u/hasslehawk · 6 pointsr/KerbalSpaceProgram

Absolutely, it adds a great degree of control and immersion.

I'd recommend a cheap joystick to anyone interested in flying in other games, too. I couldn't imagine flying without one anymore in Arma. And certainly there are people out there who swear by joysticks in KSP, and I don't mean to contradict them. My opinion is nothing more than an anecdote.

I think you'll find yourself making excuses to use it in other games though, once you have it!

The Logitech Extreme 3d Pro is the king of the entry-level joystick market, by the way. And with good reason. That Mad Catz v.1 up there got me in the air, but is a bit clunky.

__

Edit: This comment was edited to remove some information about control surfaces behaving funky that I was either remembering incorrectly or doesn't apply anymore.

u/Archerofyail · 6 pointsr/hoggit

Yeah this probably about the cheapest you can go and still get okay performance, as DCS is quite a demanding sim/game. This of course, doesn't include a joystick, which is practically required. Even just an extreme 3d pro would be enough, though something like the T16000M FCS is a really good deal for a full HOTAS setup. This also doesn't include the cost of any DCS modules you might want to buy, so keep that in mind as well.

u/IWasMeButNowHesGone · 6 pointsr/GameDeals

and as far as joysticks go, since there are a wide range of them, I believe it was Superbunnyhop who recommended this as a decent inexpensive joystick during his retro review of Tie Fighter

u/Ophichius · 6 pointsr/Warthunder

There's EC in the event tab every day, get yourself an affordable stick and get flying!

u/Maxrdt · 6 pointsr/Warthunder

I fly with a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro, no headtracking. I do just fine in FRB and HB. It is a fairly cheap joystick, around $25, but mine has lasted 3 years just fine. Here is an Amazon link.

I do feel that a head-tracking solution would help with my FRB setup, but I'm not sure about rudder pedals. The twist stick on the JS works fine for me.

u/SUGAR_SEX_MAGIK · 5 pointsr/flightsim

I use the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick. It is perfect for your price range and I think that you'll be very happy with it. The Amazon link I posted is selling it for $39, however, I purchased mine from Best Buy about a year ago for $30. You may save money by going the retail route if you're that concerned about the $10 difference. The joystick has full throttle, roll, pitch, AND twisting rudder support which negates any extra money you need to spend on rudder pedals (however I highly recommend you purchase some down the road, they feel great when flying).

When it comes to the only real essential hardware for running X-Plane 10, other than a decently powerful PC or Mac, the joystick is paramount. Down the road you can look into getting pedals, a yoke, or maybe even build a setup like this!

For $30-$40 I believe the 3D Pro is the absolute best option and think you will enjoy it. I have regularly cleaned mine for the past year and it is just as nice as the day I got it. The only exception to this being that the null/dead zone (stick resting position) has gotten slightly more wobbly, but that is a slight and fixable issue.

Good luck!

u/mymyreally · 5 pointsr/Vaping

It's definitely cheaper than my other hobbies, flight simming and photography. Diverting my attention to vaping actually ended up saving me a bunch of cash.

In fact... DON'T take up flight simming

You first need this OR this

Then you're all like, wtf? Why doesn't it look anything like this

Then you buy one of these and realize that FSX doesn't support hyper threading since it's a POS software from 2006 when Microsoft stopped developing it. So you actually need one of these, overclocked of course.

Then you need realistic controls, your keyboard and mouse just won't do so you get a cheap joystick which is ok for the first few months, till you come to the conclusion that what you really need is a HOTAS controller.

Which is about the time you buy TrackIR, which tracks your head movement for added "realism"

This is of course precisely when you realize that you would rather fly general aviation aircrafts, like Cessnas and Boeings and military aviation is just not right for you, and you get a different controller, something like this.

That lasts you all of two months before you're sick and tired of the plasticky build quality and erroneous "null" zone so you go and buy one of these.

Now that you're comfortable spending money on your "hobby" you get into serious money territory and go ahead and buy instrumentation. Your setup now looks something like this

By this time you would have spent roughly $5000 or more on hardware and a whole bunch of software plug-ins and add-ons, because FSX by itself it's pretty basic.

You're now completely committed and have dreams of being a real pilot, you start to think about how you will justify buying a properly kitted out sim and actually "charge" people money to come sim at your home. And you buy something like this which of course comes without a yoke which you have to buy separately. And then add an overhead panel.

By now you are running FSX on multiple fast computers and have connected your iPad and other devices to your setup.

There are folks who have spent many hundreds of thousands of dollars on this "hobby".

Stick to vaping. It's just a whole lot cheaper.

$35, works for the dirt series perfectly for me, I guess I've only needed it in rallying but I think it will work with any game that let's you custom map the handbrake to an axis.

Hope this helps!

u/Multai · 5 pointsr/Warthunder

Extreme 3d pro is the GoTo joystick. Nice bang for you buck, lasts years.

Extremely cheap, not a top level joystick but it doesn't have problems like inaccuracy or stuff like that.

http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Extreme-Joystick-Silver-Black/dp/B00009OY9U

28 dollars.

u/smithenheimer · 5 pointsr/starcitizen

But really. I bought a new T16000-M for $45 USD, you can definitely find one for near £30 (a $2 USD difference) and I wouldn't recommend anything that costs less than that.

@OP, Prices may be different on Amazon UK, but keep checking. Prices fluctuate as supply and demand fluctuates. Otherwise, check out Ebay. A T16000M is worth going slightly over budget.

EDIT: someone linked the Logitech 3D Stick in this thread as well, and if you really don't want to go over budget, that would probably do fine.

u/jetstream96r · 5 pointsr/flightsim

Best: Logitech 3D Pro joystick Still working perfectly after 7 years.

Can't think of a worst though.

u/brusifur · 5 pointsr/pcgaming

Logitech Extreme3D is only 25$ on Amazon, and mine still works fine after like eight years.

Flight Sims are a real disappointment in recent years. If you think about the PC game market in the mid 90s, you might imagine that flight sims would be a permanent fixture. I can explore my own theories about why they fell off in popularity (I blame console gamers), but I don't want to digress too much.

Anyhow, /u/Kocrachon has some great advice on games. You might also enjoy FreeSpace 2. It came out in like 1999, but the community made several mods and updates to it, so its pretty great, especially if you like Xwing.

Also, TIE Fighter was bigger and better than Xwing in every way. There are some fan-made updates that use the later Xwing vs Tie Fighter engine, but I recall they crashed alot.

Battlestation Pacific is a more arcadey type flight sim, but you can play it like a real pilot if you choose.

My current favorite flight sim is Take On Helicopters. It is fantastic, but (duh) it only features Choppers. It does have an actual 'story', and teaches you how to fly basically. It also has challenges that have you weaving through buildings at 100mph. I like any game that doesn't restrict you to 'sane' flying.

Its really unfortunate that your choices are basically to play older games, or dedicate your life to one of the most complex games ever made (DCS world).

u/mithrasinvictus · 5 pointsr/linux_gaming

Not a joystick expert, but what about this one? It's a very reliable brand and a very reasonable price.

u/joshking518 · 4 pointsr/flightsim

I believe that it's widely agreed upon, that the Logitech Extreme 3d Pro is the best joystick on the cheap. It's only about $30 and can be found at your local stores or online. If you want something better, you'll need to spend a bit more (>$100) for a nice HOTAS. Hope this helps.

u/thestonedbandit · 4 pointsr/Vive

You shouldn't have a hard time getting the maximum turn speed with a mouse. Make sure that you're not full throttle. The throttle has a blue section in the middle where your turn speed is maximized. Look through all the keybindings, there are a ton of them and you'll find stuff that you need. Like shifting the power from weapons to engines to get your boost to charge faster, or systems to get your shields to charge faster. Also make sure your landing gear is up because that slows you down to make it easier to land.

You could probably do fine with just a joystick and the keyboard if you can touch type. Cheapest best 3d (rotating for yaw)
joystick is the Logitech Extreme 3d Pro for like $35. If you want to feel more like you're flying a starship, I'd recommend the Thrustmaster Hotas X. It's probably the best sub $100 hotas, but you'll still need to use the keyboard for some things because there are only so many buttons and E:D has oh so many bindable commands.

u/AbeFromanSK · 4 pointsr/flightsim

That's awesome! Flight simulation is strangely enjoyable. If you'd have told me I'd have put in nearly 400 hours in the last two years sitting in a virtual cockpit and flying around the world, I'd have laughed in your face. But... here I am.

I started with FSX, which I still use mostly because I've invested so much into it. FSX is dated, 32 Bit and not the prettiest of the big three, but I've clocked more hours in it than anywhere else. It's the cheapest flight sim straight out of the box at $24.99, but there's one thing you should probably learn about flight simming.

It is not cheap.

It blew my mind after years of modding games like The Elder Scrolls and Fallout where I could mod to my heart's content without spending a dime that I had to actually buy mods. If you want to seriously get the most out of any sim though, you have to be prepared to spend some cash. The advantage, however, is that you absolutely get what you pay for. I've seen some incredible addons for Skyrim, but some of the most top-notch addons I've ever seen in anything have come from flight sim.

Here's the addons I own for FSX, to give you an idea.

  • PMDG 737 Series - A Boeing-approved 737 (and variants) with hundreds of pages of documentation, giving you the closest experience you can get to flying one without actually flying it. $69.99
  • FS2Crew - Simulates the experience of having a first officer in the cockpit with you. They'll talk to you, flip switches and generally do the stuff that F/Os do. Makes the sim really come alive, and probably my favorite addon. $34.95
  • Ground Services X - A wonderful addon that makes the setup phase much more interesting. Includes catering, boarding, fueling, pushback, and a number of other great features. $34.00
  • FSCaptain - Lets you "work" for a real airline, recording your career and grading your performance. $39.00
  • Active Sky Next - Allows you to import real, live weather into your sim, or use historical weather from pretty much any point in recent history. $24.99

I've probably bought a couple more, but you get the idea. It's expensive, but the end result is stunning. You get an experience like no other. Also please don't think I'm bragging about being loaded. I am a broke college student, and the only reason why I ended up buying these addons was because I can't make good financial decisions and, at one point, every dime I made went towards flight simming (I wouldn't recommend it unless you enjoy having an empty bank account.)

I'm not saying you have to spend hundreds of dollars though. More modern sims like X-Plane 11 are loaded with content and free plugins. If I were to recommend a sim to a newcomer, I'd say XP11 all the way. If you just want to get in the cockpit and start flying, it's your best bet. Plus it looks good out of the box, and you can get photorealistic textures for free with Ortho4XP.

The other big option is Prepar3D. I've never used it, but it's my understanding that it's a more advanced version of FSX. It has a lot of the same addons as FSX, such as the PMDG series of planes. I can't say much about it since I've never owned it, though.

    Conclusion:

  • FSX is my personal choice, just because I've spent so much on it and because it's still a solid sim 12 years later.
  • X-Plane 11 is the best choice for newcomers.
  • FSX (and by extension, P3D) is the best for paid addons. XP is lacking in that department.

EDIT: I completely forgot to address the joystick problem. I flew for 150+ hours with either a mouse or an Xbox controller, and while that was doable it became far more enjoyable with a flight stick. I have a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro and it's brilliant. It's also cheap (as flight sticks go). Highly recommend it if you're serious about flight simming (and it's great for helicopters in Arma too!).
u/Zergom · 4 pointsr/battlestations

I figured that since he bought 5 joysticks, he must only be responsible for 5 systems.

  • KB & Mouse are dell, so probably $20 or less for the combo
  • Monitors are AOC Razers, $120 a pop.
  • Full system specs aren't listed, but based on them being GTX 670, I figured around $500 per system.
  • Joysticks are about $35 each
  • Tables are about $30 each
  • There's a TV and a larger monitor, and power bars, and some other stuff not well pictured, I figured ~$1500 would cover it to arrive at $5.

That's my logic, anyhow. But if he provided all 10 stations, then it's probably closer to $10k.
u/ProblyAThrowawayAcct · 4 pointsr/flightsim

A decent entry-level joystick runs thirty bucks plus shipping on amazon. Microsoft's xbawks36 controller runs forty-five bucks.

Joysticks are better.

Joysticks can be had cheaper.

u/Captain_Midnight · 4 pointsr/EliteDangerous

I bought a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro a while back. It's not as good as the Saitek options, but it costs much less. I use the joystick and my keyboard simultaneously to perform certain actions, like sliding. You don't mention what country you live in, but in the US, Amazon has it on sale for $30.

If you decide that a joystick is for you after that, then you can open up your wallet for something fancier.

u/PantlessSunshine · 4 pointsr/starcitizen

I have an extra one of these laying around if you want it. Some use, but still in excellent condition. Used it a lot in BF4 and SC, but upgraded last week to an X52.

  • $34.99 - get a Logitech 3D pro joystick

  • $39.99 - then get all the FC3 modules
    (F-15C, A-10A, Su-27, Su-33, MiG-29A, MiG-29S, and Su-25)

  • Total expense: $75
(I guess the ace combat will be $60)

And, you are part of the glorious sim!

    Cheers!
u/TheCrudMan · 3 pointsr/EliteDangerous

Just got the game like maybe 2 weeks ago: I'm using two joysticks. Seems to work pretty well. The pitch on one of them is pretty fucked so I just ordered another. That $33 logitech one. Used it before and it's decent. If you can afford that I'd def say go for it.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00009OY9U/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Looking forward to it getting here. Current setup is roll/pitch on right stick, yaw and forward/reverse thrust on left stick. Buttons for up/down and left/right on each stick, and flight assist off in a prominent spot. When this stick comes in since it has a twist rudder I'll might fiddle things around. I do a huge amount of flying with flight-assist off and the setup seems to work pretty well.

Like I said, if you can afford that stick it's probably a pretty good buy! You can do roll, pitch, and yaw with it, it has a throttle controller, lots of buttons, and a D-pad under the thumb that you can use for thrusters. Probably do fore/back/left/right on that part, and then up/down on the adjacent buttons.

I also have a logitech G27 and have been fooling around with using the pedals. Mostly I use the shifter controller part for elite. http://i.imgur.com/qGj0kgJ.jpg

D-pad and buttons are nice to have for systems.

Tried the setup with a friends Oculus and it maps pretty well to the HOTAS seen in the game, since the left stick does forward/reverse thrust.

u/LazerSturgeon · 3 pointsr/starcitizen

I would say no for one big reason: Mad Catz suck.

They're cheap in price but also very much in construction. These sticks are notorious for breaking down very rapidly.

For a little bit more in price you can get the Logitech Attack 3D which is about the best stick you can buy for <$50.

I know that many people in this sub, and other flight subs get this as a starter stick (trust me, you'll eventually upgrade :P). It has all the essentials you need:

  • throttle slider
  • POV hat
  • various buttons around both the base and the head

It has much better construction than the Mad Catz stick and honestly a better layout.
u/CC440 · 3 pointsr/gaming

The best budget joystick is only $26.

The game plays amazingly well with KB+M in the modes designed for it but the joystick opens up access to Simulator Battles which are probably what you're looking for. I've played a lot more on the tank side of the game (currently in closed beta) so I can't offer an expert opinion but I can definitively say that the way they model damage is very well done. Flight models vary from great simulation to completely broken though but that's an ongoing goal of development since the game isn't a full release yet.

u/kitetrim · 3 pointsr/flightsim

Grab yourself an Extreme 3D Pro and try it again. 10 times better experience.

edit: you could also get yourself a much nicer joystick than this but it's a great (cheap) place to start.

Past:

-Doom modded with the Brutal DOOM mod

-KOTOR and KOTOR II

-GTA IV with ICEnhancer or whatever the hell you want

-Modded Skyrim if you haven't had your fill of it

-Minecraft on PC is a whole different world from consoles or mobile devices

-Civilization V (with all expansions)

-Starcraft 2

Current games fun with a PC:

-Elite: Dangerous (amazing amount of detail and things to do)

-Arma 3 (fun with friends, you have many friends to meet)

-Alien Isolation (good horror experience)

-Dark Souls (I suggest not getting DS2 as a remake coming out soon will not be compatible) Notice: CONTROLLER HIGHLY SUGGESTED

-The Stanley Parable (grab it on sale, it'll make your head spin)

-Most anything by Telltale

Sure, it's a short list up above, but those are just games I've been playing lately.

Future:

-GTA V PC release

-Star Citizen

-Anything for the Oculus Rift

-Evolve

I hope that helps you on your quest for gaming!

For games like Elite: Dangerous or Star Citizen, I highly suggest peripherals like two flight sticks for either hands (or a HOTAS, but those are much more expensive than two flight sticks), as the two hat switches that a flight stick has, along with all the different axes of movement make them great for 3D space flight.

Here is my left hand joystick

and my right hand joystick

It feels very natural to use after a few minutes of using it, and they can be used for any game that can detect a joystick's raw input (basically any game), while the logitech buttons can have keystrokes assigned to any button, making the thumb button great for push-to-talk functionality.

Have fun!

u/AndorianWomenRule · 3 pointsr/pcmasterrace

I use the following control surfaces beyond the standard keyboard and mouse. There is certainly most expensive and arguably better options out there for Star Citizen but for about $100 this setup has been rock solid.

Logitech Extreme 3D Pro

Logitech G13

u/PhilosophizingCowboy · 3 pointsr/starcitizen

I use this and have no complaints.

Honestly there is no rush for a Joystick. Mouse/Keyboard (so far) seems to work much better for both beginning and advanced players. I think a recent poll of the leaderboards showed that 2/3 of the top 100 players prefer mouse. So it's not as if you NEED a joystick.

My 3D pro works just fine though, and it's super cheap. I'll probably upgrade next year with launch.

u/42194821 · 3 pointsr/flightsim

T-16000M if you just need joystick with twist (rudder). It has amazing precision. Uses HAL sensors (probably not the same as the ones used in Warthog which is currently the best joystick available at around 400$).

T-Flight HOTAS X if you want a good but cheap HOTAS. Has twist (rudder).

Logitech Extreme 3D if you just want joystick with twist (rudder). Another cheap but amazing joystick.

All of the above are well under 100$ and decent. You could also get X-52 but like most said it's a gamble.

Both T-16000M and T-Flight HOTAS are excellent and pretty cheap so they would be my #1 recommendation. Here is a small comparsion between the two by somebody.

You could try finding and reading some reviews online before you make your decision.

u/The_Grand_Man · 3 pointsr/pcmasterrace

How about a simulator set? u/dante80 · 3 pointsr/Cynicalbrit

Well, mouse and keyboard worked pretty nice for me, the game controls are extremely customizable, down to individual axes sensitivity and deadzone options. You can essentially tailor them to your exact preference, have in mind that it will take some time to do it though, mainly due to the fact that there are a lot of different controls (and options for them).

The main reason for using a HOTAS setup is actually not competitive play but... simply immersion. You look down and see the pilot in game have his hands on the throttle and stick like you do, and each and every movement that you do is directly translated to his animated hands. Its actually pretty convincing, especially if you use a rift.

Lastly, if you really want ( not need, want^andyouwill ) to get a HOTAS setup in the future, you don't have to pay 100 bucks for it really. You can get something like this (which has a cable to detach the two parts btw) for less than 50$, and you will be able to use it in many, many games (if you are into flying sims, that is). And even if you still want the feeling but don't want to spend the half-smacker, you can get a very decent joystick for less than 30$.

Hope that helps, cheers..C:

u/GeneUnit90 · 3 pointsr/flightsim

Roll it back to level. Straight and level flight, at least without trim, is actually pretty hard to maintain. Your keyboard doesn't have the precision to do this. Get this joystick. It's pretty good for a beginner stick. Also, watch/do all the training stuff in the sim.

u/sushi_cw · 3 pointsr/EliteDangerous

There aren't a lot of cheap HOTAS options. Some things to consider:

  • T-Flight HOTAS X is relatively cheap at $50, but has relatively few buttons to work with and mediocre sensors that can make fine aiming difficult. A lot of people use it and are very happy with it though.
  • T.16000M FCS is the next step up, and although it's fairly new it seems to be getting a pretty good reception. It's over your budget at $129 though.
  • Dual joysticks is another totally viable and fun way to play, although it may take a bit more work to find a way to control all thrusters that feels natural (some people use twist for forward/reverse, some add rudder pedals, etc). There are obviously lots of possible combinations, one that works for your budget is a T-16000m combined with a Logitech Extreme 3d pro, for $95 combined.

Thought I'd share what I found for any one else that may be interested.
https://www.amazon.com/Extreme-3D-Pro-Joystick-Windows-x/dp/B00009OY9U

Copy/paste of one review of the linked product above.

I bought this for one series of games: X-Wing, Tie Fighter, X-Wing Alliance and XW vs TF. I must say...despite how old these games are(though I admit I am playing versions I downloaded on Steam), this works perfectly. Every button maps to something, which is great as these games use the whole keyboard. It isnt hard to set up at all and there seems to be no disconnect between 2015 hardware and a game from the 90s(though again, steam versions). My only issue is the throttle stick doesnt map for all of the games as I'd like. in X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter, your ships throttle goes up and down according to where you move the throttle to, in other games in this series it simply does 100%, 66%, 33% and 0%. I see no way to change this as its the only button i cant seem to map myself. Thats pretty minor. overall I am very satisfied. I doubt I will be playing many other flight games to test this out, but for my limited application it works great!

u/atesch_10 · 3 pointsr/simracing

Thinking of using a joystick hand break solution like this. I have a logitech one that I want to be able to continue to use it as a joystick and possibly be able to replace/add to the stick and use it as a hand break.

Have you left the joystick range of motion alone? Like does it still move in all directions still or just a line as a hand break would?

u/70KnotsCheck · 3 pointsr/hoggit

Hey man, great work for a Xbox controller! Next step is a joystick. If you're looking for some cheap ones that'll do everything you need to, the [Logitech Extreme 3D Pro] (https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-963290-0403-Extreme-Joystick-Windows/dp/B00009OY9U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1497142979&sr=8-1&keywords=logitech+extreme+3d+pro) is the place to look, it's around $30 to $40 from most retailers, but the price also equates to lower quality, and not a bad experience but one that could be improved upon significantly. The next step up would be a [VKB Gladiator] (https://www.amazon.com/Gladiator-Joystick-Flight-Simulator-Controller-Stick/dp/B01G6GT49O/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1497143033&sr=8-1&keywords=VKB%2BGladiator&th=1). A bit of a jump in price (nearly double, can be had for around $100USD +/-$25), but most reviews say it's stellar and a couple people around this subreddit love it. The $200~ price range after that is a bit iffy, as you get sub-par quality most of the time, but the [Thrustmaster T.1600M HOTAS] (https://www.amazon.com/Thrustmaster-T-16000M-FCS-HOTAS-Controller/dp/B01KCHPRXA/ref=pd_cp_63_2?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B01KCHPRXA&pd_rd_r=SX371RPQX69YRDW52JNY&pd_rd_w=8TOqr&pd_rd_wg=NAt9b&psc=1&refRID=SX371RPQX69YRDW52JNY) has kind of alleviated that issue. Most reviews make it out to be excellent for the price. If you've got the change, I think it'd be a great place to start. Other than that there's not much in the $300-$200 price range. In the $500-$400 price range however, there's the one and only [Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS] (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00371R8P4/ref=psdc_172487_t5_B01KCHPRXA), which is extremely expensive but modeled after a real A-10C and is of stellar quality. You're going to need rudder pedals if you go that route though, so I'd advise against it as it's got quite a premium to pay.

Glad you're enjoying the hobby, and hopefully you can expand to a stick soon and get even better. No pressure to get one if you're fine with the controller, but it can totally enhance your experience.

A joystick will be very handy for space sims in that era. During that time little consideration was given to keyboard mouse control. In the 90s space sims were very popular and therefore assumed you would play with a joystick. Here is an inexpensive recommendation: Logitech 963290-0403 Extreme 3D Pro Joystick for Windows https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00009OY9U/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_7P7dzbC2PSRYS

We ran with the Logitech controllers this year to allow the driver to move into the next driver station or switch positions with the co-driver as needed to improve his sight lines. If your students have used the Logitech controllers before, I'd personally recommend sticking to them.

A lot of teams use joysticks. Common ones are:

  • Mad Katz V1 - Ambidextrous, but I've heard bad things about the build quality
  • Logitech Extreme 3D - Includes twist axis, nice button set, but only right handed
  • Logitech Attack 3 - Ambidextrous, fairly rugged (we've had some since like 2010), but not readily available anymore.

Or you can totally jump the shark and go full-on 114 style DJ board and guitar as controllers!
u/Rebitaay · 3 pointsr/arma

Me and a couple of friends use the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro, and it's a pretty damn good joystick for $35.

  • 6 Buttons on the base
  • 4 buttons + "hat" (sort of a 8-direction analogue stick) on the top
  • Main trigger + thumb button
  • Analogue Thrust slider (probably most important)
  • Joystick twists, good for rudder/peddles

The hat on top is especially good because you can use it for free-look, or just extra buttons if you use headtracking (which I also recommend, but it's much more pricey).
u/Hidden_Bomb · 3 pointsr/flightsim

Honestly, I don't think that you'll find many people around here that use PS4 and XBOX controllers for flight sim. I even bought an Xbox one controller for driving in games and rocket league, and have tried it flying, and it just feels wrong.

My advice would be just to buy a cheap joystick to get started. This one is great value and if you choose to be more serious, you can transition towards something better quite easily.

u/nikidash · 3 pointsr/flightsim

Better than nothing, but a joystick would be the ideal thing. There's a reason if joysticks are used on real planes!

I've had this one for years and it still works basically perfectly despite the hell i put it through. Another really popular and cheap joystick is this one. If you want to search for others, check if they have a rudder axis. The ones i linked allow you to control the rudder by twisting the stick, but some cheapo joysticks don't have that, and trust me, you're gonna need it.

u/Bullwinkle1983 · 3 pointsr/battlefield3

Just bought one myself. I found the two cheapest options were:

Logitech 3d Pro

Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS

I went with the Thrustmaster as it looked like a higher quality unit, and I've got a large desk.

The default binds in BF3 were not correct, but I was able to rebind the controls and it works great.

u/7AB7 · 3 pointsr/starcitizen

Ultimately, it's going to be a matter of taste. What sounds like the most fun to you? That's the question I asked myself a few years ago when the original Arena Commander module released. I decided the answer to that was dual stick, so I got myself a cheap left handed joystick and tried it. Turns out I love it! If immersion is what you're looking for, joysticks certainly deliver, at least in my experience. But I've been playing with joysticks for two decades now so I'm familiar with adjusting to odd control schemes. You may not want to invest that time, effort, and money.

If you do decide to try it out, however, there are a lot of cheap options that will give you a taste of what you're looking for without breaking the bank. I used the Extreme 3D pro joystick before upgrading recently, and it was a good option for only $30. Link HERE. There's also the T16000M which is fully ambidextrous for $60. I used it to test dual stick flight. Link HERE. And you may find them cheaper used. You can always upgrade later if it turns out you really like the setup, which is what I did.

If all you want to do is run cargo and explore, though, any options will be fine. If you think you'll be happy with mouse and keyboard, don't sweat it! I like decoupled flight and combat so having that additional control over my thrusters is nice and immersive, but that's my situation, not yours.

Again, ask yourself honestly what sounds like fun and go from there. If mouse and keyboard seems sufficient to you, there's no point in spending money. No amount of advice from other people can top that.

u/MartinATL · 2 pointsr/flightsim

I use this $35 logitech cheapo and it works great. I use W-S as my throttle and Q-E-R-F as my strafing keys. I would wait until the game becomes a little more complete before dropping any huge amounts of cash on a joystick (unless there are other games you play that have hotas support)

u/ericwdhs · 2 pointsr/EliteDangerous

Yes! I'm playing with a lowly Logitech Extreme 3D Pro, and the experience is far better than playing with a controller or mouse. (I did try both for a while.)

It should be noted that my setup is only using that joystick for the stick portion. The buttons and throttle on the base are pretty much untouched. I still control the throttle with the keyboard along with most of the other functions.

u/andyminhho · 2 pointsr/flightsim

Have you flown anything before? If not, I suggest you get FSX:Steam to start out. Then, you can fly with your mouse, and practice the basics, and maybe get a joystick (I recommend this one). Once you’ve gotten used to it. Get either X-Plane or P3D and start investing into some addons

u/infin8lives · 2 pointsr/flightsim

I'd also suggest a flightstick. The logitech Extreme 3d pro is a good starter stick, it's listed at amazon for $25.00 http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Extreme-Joystick-Silver-Black/dp/B00009OY9U I'd also recommend Microsoft Flight Simulator X as a good sim that's compatable with your TrackIR5

u/Alkahestic · 2 pointsr/EliteDangerous

I find joystick a lot easier than mouse and keyboard, I'm not using anything fancy, Logitech Extreme 3D Pro. I've had it for 2 years and used it with HAWX, HAWX 2, Wings of Prey, IL-2, and now E:D, no real complaints. It's been plug and play under Win7, Win8, and Win8.1 64bit.

If you like E:D and think you're going to be playing it for awhile, I'd say go for it, it's not that pricey and if you really don't like it, you could always Ebay it.

Voice control is a must for me with VR and complicated control schemes like Elite.

Also, if you really love the game I highly suggest a stick (or at least an Xbox style controller) because it's much more immersive using physical controls as opposed to the Quest controllers.

I am going to mess with this over the weekend. I could see this as fun for docking and plane flights, potentially landing.

u/CapCharlisimo · 2 pointsr/nerdcubed

I'm not sure if you need one (it's not done installing yet, haven't been able to play it), but I've got a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro. It's super cheap for a joystick, less than $30 on Amazon, and it's really nice! I've used it for Aerofly and it worked pretty well. If you can't afford/get one, you can probably just use a gamepad for FSX as well.

u/BadCompanyDude · 2 pointsr/Warthunder

Logitech Extreme 3d Pro is widely regarded as a great starter stick. Having played with it myself, it's definitely a pretty solid stick and I use it with War Thunder, DCS, and Arma.

One "flaw" that should be pointed out is that this stick will center itself when you let go; this can be good or bad depending on your personal preference and if your plane has trim controls for all control surfaces.

The usual advice for a beginner joystick is the Logitech 3d Extreme Pro. It's only $30 and does everything that you need.

u/SvennEthir · 2 pointsr/SteamVR

I did the same thing. I bought it, was overwhelmed with controls and didn't want to buy a HOTAS, and put it down. Years later I picked it up in VR and I HIGHLY recommend it.

You can play it with the motion controllers, but it requires the use of a few programs: Virtual Button Box and Steam VR Wheel.

Virtual Button Box will let you set up button overlays that you can bind to any keyboard keys you want and gives you a few options for activating them with the vive controllers. You can drag, resize, etc all of these buttons. I use them for any non-time critical actions. It actually makes it feel like you are in a spaceship cockpit with a bunch of buttons around you can press to activate all kinds of things.

Steam VR Wheel has a few modes that lets you emulate different joysticks with a motion controller. There's an option to use it as a semi-HOTAS style stick. It works okay, but it's not amazing.

Alternately, you can use VoiceAttack to issue voice commands as well.

Personally, I use a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro joystick (super cheap joystick that works well, not crazy expensive like the HOTAS) in my right hand and a motion controller in the left for activating Virtual Button Box buttons. It's the most immersive VR experience I've found yet.

u/Archimedes_SC · 2 pointsr/starcitizen

Are you looking for just a stick or a HOTAS?
The RSI forums have some good discussions on this topic, including this one.

I've personally tried a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro, a Cyborg 3D, and Thrustmaster T-Flight, and I prefer the Logitech primarily due to the ergonomics (though the quality also feels decent). For only $35 on Amazon, this is what I'd go with if you're just looking for a joystick without the HOTAS.

u/pokemaughan · 2 pointsr/EliteDangerous

oh it's worth it. i bought a logitec 3d pro over fathers day and it is the only thing i use to fly now. there is something very satisfying about pulling a trigger to activate your next stage. not to mention, i have essentially everything i need rebound to the joystick, so i am barely touching the keyboard at all when i play (except for RCS)

the absolute best thing is a physical throttle. you cannot get the same precision out of the ctrl and shift buttons.

Logitech Extreme 3D Pro is only $32. It's the cheapest joystick worth buying and a good starter stick to see if you like this kind of thing. A bit better of a stick is the Thrustmaster T-16000M at $46. Things quickly get more expensive after that.

CrookedStool isn't entirely correct.

Both FSX and XP10 can run on decent settings on pretty much anything with a semi-good CPU and pretty much any GPU.

Since you mentioned X-Plane in your post, I've built something that's about $650 to run that, as opposed to FSX which everyone else is building for. Though this should run FSX pretty well as well.

After whatever discounts are around when you buy the parts it should be at $650 or less. Currently running about $630, which is a little over budget, but it's really worth it if you can do it.

Essentially, i5 CPU for good per-core performance while being pretty cheap. Overclocking CPU and mobo weren't really in the budget, so that's that.

Good, cheap cooler.

Inexpensive but reliable motherboard with everything you'd really need. Though, again, no overclocking, which, if you absolutely require, you'll need a $100+ motherboard.

Cheap RAM. RAM's all RAM, so if it works with everything else in your PC and is from a good company it'll all be pretty much the same.

1TB HDD. Figured I've give you the extra 500GB for another $20.

Best bang-for-your-buck GPU out there currently, in my opinion.

Basic, but good case.

Cheap DVD drive because you need it for sims.

Can't really tell you how many frames it will net you in XP10, but it should make it more than playable on medium settings. Just make sure you have HDR off and cloud puffs reduced as much as you can stand, and don't worry about running max settings. Because XP10 is beautiful even on medium ones

As for a joystick, I'd reccomend the Logitech Extreme 3d Pro. Mine's 7 or 8 years old and still going strong, only one button's gone out, and it wasn't an important one.

Also, I'd reccomend FlyJSim's enhanced Runway textures. They make the runways higher res without hurting performance much if at all.
And also the Taxi-HD Enhancement Pack. It makes the taxi signs better looking, and comes with some different textures.
They're both free, simple, and yet have made XP10 look way better.

As for other things, I'd reccomend finding some good cloud textures. If you can spend a little more money, Skymaxx is absolutely amazing and gives you sun rays, clouds, and some other stuff, as well as Urbanmaxx, which gives better textures, night lighting, and other things like normal maps for more 3d looks in cities.

And that should be it. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

I totally agree with you in that pedals make the most sense for thrust (these other guys don't know what they're missing out on)

Here's two wheels with pedals that should work for you.

Unfortunately, you're not going to find any 3-pedal setups for under $100 unless you get used.

---

As an aside, my current setup is a Logitech MOMO set of pedals (I picked the wheel up used for $50), a Mad Catz V1 for the left hand (up/down and left/right translocation) and a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro for the right hand (used as a regular flight stick)

At some point I'm going to figure out how to mount the Mad Catz one sideways, because 'space!'

>How can I know which games will work with a controller and what kind of controller to get?

Almost every single recent game on PC supports controllers with zero issues, especially if they're multiplatform releases. There are also plenty of third aprty controllers available for you to buy

If for some reason there's no controller support, you also have software like Joy2Key which allows you to map keyboard inputs to a controller so that any game supports anything.

As for everything else, PC gaming is much more accessible than console gaming, mostly due to the fact that there are dozens of peripherals and alternative control methods you can utilize on a PC that are simply not available on a console.

For example you could use something like Stinkyboard or frag pedal to map certain keys to your feet instead of fingers.

Or use a joystick for movement and mouse for looking around.

You could also use any of the gaming pads with a joystick for movement and then use the buttons for other random things.

You might also want to look into the Steam controller mostly because it allows you to completely remap any key to do anything. So you're not stuck with whatever setup the devs want you to use, rather you can remap buttons, function and actions easily to suit your needs.

PC is an open platform, anyone can release anything on it. There are tons of assistive technologies available already, you have options to map your keyboard keys to macros that do multiple action, get peripherals and map keys to those, hell you can use headtracking cameras for mouselook instead of a traditional mouse. There are tons of options out there and I guarantee you'll have an easier time on the PC than on consoles.

I'm using a Fanatec CSR wheel with a Clubsport Table Clamp and a Logitech Joystick as a handbrake. I'm also using the standard CSR pedal set. I got into sim-racing several years ago when I was in middle school, so I saved up money one summer to buy the wheel and pedals alone. I started the same way as you are playing now, with a controller and Forza 2/GT4, and just worked my way up when I realized that I wanted to take it more seriously. If you're looking to buy a wheel, I would buy a used Logitech Driving Force GT and use the attached sequential shifter as a handbrake. The pedal set does not have a clutch, but I don't use it in DiRT Rally (or any other competitive sim) anyway. The DFGT attaches to most tables easily, has very good force feedback, and is compatible with PC. It's the only wheel my friend uses, and he is a very fantastic driver.

There is an option in DiRT to drive using a manual transmission but without a clutch, which is what I use. I prefer to drive this way so that I do not have to focus on clutch actuation while I'm racing, and can simply focus on the corners. I personally prefer this option even after years of sim racing and having access to a clutch pedal.

What's your budget.. if you want a good solid starter joystick I'd say grab this one. The logitech Extreme 3D It's under $30 and is a solid workhouse. It's not as insane as some of them out there but it's very affordable before you sink 100's of dollars into something that you decide you're bored of.

u/Matathias · 1 pointr/whowouldwin

So, I recently bought Assassin's Creed: Unity.

...I think I'll be giving the internet more heed next time.

In other news I also recently got a joystick (this one), any good games I could get to go with it? The only game I have that it's viable for so far is Strike Suit Zero, really.

u/KARMAgetsYA · 1 pointr/battlestations

It is a "Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick"

I love it. it has a lot of extra button on the base, but i do not use those or the throttle control very much. I use it most for Elite Dangerous, while having my other hand on my keyboard. Only concerns i may have getting it is that the throttle does not have a "notch" or tactile feedback for when you are midway, and the thumb stick can be a little slippery. however, for the price, it is perfect for most uses.

u/merwin7 · 1 pointr/EliteDangerous

I just got the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick ($30 USD) and I think it will hold me over until I decide if i need / want the CN Products HOTAS later.

I also recommend VoiceAttack for $8 USD with the Elite Dangerous Voice Pack $~5 USD.

I think you get more out of spending the extra $~13 USD on the VoicePack combo, then out of the thrust control + 2-3 usable buttons on your left hand. But that's just me.

u/zebra0312 · 1 pointr/Warthunder

Probably a good and cheap choice for beginners:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00009OY9U?pc_redir=T1&qid=1333913424&s=videogames&sr=1-2

The HOTAS Joysticks (one throttle on the left hand, stick on the right) start at $100 and they can go up to $450, the pedals uo to $300 extra. But I dont think that you wanna buy that in the future :D

Edit: Found a HOTAS for $50, not bad:

u/NanashiWanderer · 1 pointr/Vive

So, a very generous person gifted me a set of CH pro pedals. Problem is that I don't have any kind of HOTAS setup yet. I am heavily leaning towards a double joystick+pedals setup.

Thing is that I'm not flush with cash at the moment after building my rig and doing a bunch of work/favors on the side to earn enough cash for my Vive+1080 FTW. I was always going to wait on a HOTAS setup for a bit but these pedals pretty much fell right into my lap and now I am tempted to get some joysticks... I've seen these on Amazon and as I understand they are even the default joystick for star citizen. They are pretty cheap and have great reviews. So my question is would it be ok for me to get two of those or just wait and save money for a better pair? I'm a big advocate of waiting and saving on something that is better quality/worthwhile.

But at the same time, this would be my first time using a full HOTAS. My father in law had me try to fly a glider in his, what had to be gimped, old flight sim rig with just one cheap joystick and throttle and it was one of the most boring things I've ever done... But I also had this feeling like there is lots of potential there and I could get hooked. I don't know if that makes sense lol.

Anyway, I think what I'm trying to say is I don't know if I should spend tons on something I don't know if I will fall in love with right off the bat. But at the same time I want to make sure I am giving it a fair shot and want an experience that isn't really gimped.

Oh and what VR games would work with gamepad + paddles? Or do I need to get joysticks? was thinking about picking up Elite or House of the dying sun.

I've asked these same questions other places and haven't really gotten an answer so I figured I'd post here before I made a thread. :/ Don't fail me Reddit!

Really depends on how many bells and whistles you want. The one I have set me back about 35 bucks when I bought it, but isn't supported on all that much. Even on the games I do play that support it, I find a mouse more precise. Still, as you can see on Amazon and elsewhere, they can range anywhere from around $12 USD to $200+.

u/SovereignZ · 1 pointr/gaming

They always do their best to replace my broken items. Logitech is the only company I trust. Not to mention their products last a LONG time, high quality and durability.

All my peripherals are Logitech now. The only problem I ever had with their product was the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick. Fuck that joystick, FUCK IT! I had to replace FIVE of them in less than a year span. It was still awesome, but they broke every two months. While they worked it was the best joystick ever. Thankfully Logitech support understood it was crap and replaced them all free.

u/apoppin · 1 pointr/hoggit

I used to play flight sims (back in Win 98SE days) and I have an ancient HOTAS. If I decide to benchmark DCS, I will buy a new one. I am guessing that something like the Thrustmaster T.Flight Hotas X is entry level, cheap, and probably sufficient.

However, I would like a bit more information about DCS first to make sure it it is not extraordinarily difficult to benchmark in VR. For example, it's pretty hard to create a representative and repeatable benchmark for DiRT: Rally 2.0 (and I have a racing wheel and pedals) but quite easy in Project CARS 2 that allows for replaying races.

Updated: I see someone replied with this suggestion:

https://www.amazon.com/Extreme-3D-Pro-Joystick-Windows/dp/B00009OY9U/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=pc+joystick&qid=1574801559&sr=8-3

Thank-you. It isn't cost so much, but I'm mostly interested in determining if it is possible to create a repeatable and *representative* VR benchmark using the base DCS game. If it is, I will do it!

u/PilotFriend · 1 pointr/funny

Depending on what computer you have, all you need is FSX and a $30 joystick. Most modern computers are able to run FSX at this point.

This is cheaper (~2/3 the price) than that, and the logitech is miles better to use for Elite. You can get full 6 degree freedom if you set the keybinds up properly, and still have about a half dozen buttons left over for handy functions. I used one for over a year before getting an X52 on sale.

u/SeedyOne · 1 pointr/battlefield3

Look into the Logitech 3D Extreme Pro (~$27). Fairly inexpensive and a common joystick many people use. That way if you find you don't like it very much and go back to keyboard/mouse (as I did), you wont be out a bunch of cash.

u/generalchaos316 · 1 pointr/Games

Yes, but console gamers have never had to purchase additional input devices to have new experiences on their platform. No console manufacturer has ever expanded on their initial controllers to try to provide a more robust experience.

Also, KB/M is the superior control scheme for all games. Developers should be expected to release a PC game with KB/M controls that are flawless for the genre. There is no reason that any other input mechanism might enhance any PC gaming experience.

edit: This is also not KB/M but I guarantee you would like to experience it.

  1. To be honest, I've never been able to make it through a singleplayer campaign due to bugs, so i just started jumping into multiplayer matches and really began to enjoy the game. If you let people know that you are trying to learn how to play correctly, they will be generally patient with you. If you want someone to play with sometime, send me a message.

Infinite Flight supports the PS4 & XB1 controllers! I wouldn’t recommend using them though. There alright for fighter aircraft but controlling the throttle is tough especially on approach.

I recommend the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick. It’s only $30 ish bucks and handles great for a cheap joystick.

You can also use the accelerometer on your phone. Infinite Flight has landing aids you can use that can help out. Myself, since I the last flight simulator I played was Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004, I can’t see myself using anything but a joystick for a flight sim.

u/lodi_a · 1 pointr/Warthunder

There's a keyboard/mouse player around here that routinely posts screenshots where's he's up like 10-0 in a sim EC match, so it's definitely possible to play with no equipment investment. Once you're hooked you'll never go back.

That said, if you come to like sim, I highly recommend picking up any crappy joystick, e.g. this $25 logitech, and use your mouse in your left hand to look around. I started with that exact combo and it's totally workable. P.S. start with the spitfire line. Trust me.

The keyboard/mouse should do you just fine once you get used to it though!

u/HostisHumaniGeneris · 1 pointr/KerbalSpaceProgram

http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Extreme-Joystick-Silver-Black/dp/B00009OY9U

The joystick can be twisted to allow for rotation as well as pitch and yaw, but I'm still tweaking the sensitivity since its very easy to start spinning out of control.

The hat toggle on the top and the throttle on the bottom are my favorite features. The hat toggle is connected to my lateral thrusters so I can use my thumb to nudge my ships up down left and right while using the main stick to tweak my angle. It made docking a real breeze when I tested it last night. The throttle, as I mentioned, makes burns very accurate as you can go from max thrust to minimum or anywhere in between with a flick of the lever.

u/nickiter · 1 pointr/starcitizen

Joystick, n52 SpeedPad, a pair of rudder pedals , and hopefully an Oculus Rift, if they're good and affordable by then.

u/I_TensE_I · 1 pointr/pcmasterrace

I'm very excited for both Elite:Dangerous and Star Citizen however I'm waiting on putting my money in SC since it doesn't look like it's coming out for AT LEAST another 2 years. So I pre-ordered E:D since it will be available soon (less than a week) and got a Saitek X55 Rhino which is kinda pricey but looks (and actually is) very nice in terms of quality and functionality. Sure it's made out of plastic and for $200 that's apparently outrageous but it feels very solid and not like it's some cheap knock-off.

There's also the Saitek X52 as well as the X52 Pro which are a bit cheaper and are getting very good reviews as well. Also the Logitech 3D Pro that apparently served some people for AGES without breaking (but that's just the joystick)

u/LunarPhoenix96 · 1 pointr/starcitizen

The only reason I could possibly NOT advocate getting the best joystick you can afford at this moment is that it's highly likely that CIG will be releasing a HOTAS setup designed around Star Citizen sometime in the future, and it's likely to have a fairly high price tag, which might be worth saving up for. Up to you, really--I just got an X-55 and am loving it myself. Actually a deal at newegg right now is offering a $30 gift certificate alongside an X-55.

Edit: After looking at the joystick you were considering in your comment, I'm gonna say that I've heard some pretty poor things about that model. If you're looking for something in that price range, the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro is much better, IMO. Used one for a LONG time.

FSX:SE is by far the best running sim on lower spec PCs.

You said you don't have a gaming PC which means you probably have integrated GPU (or maybe a low-tier dedicated GPU), however you are still likely to have a decent CPU, FSX:SE is more CPU-intensive than GPU-intensive and that's why I think it will be your safest bet.

FYI I run it on an i5 3.2 Ghz (it's a quad core) and it runs very well. I think it could run equally well on a dual core CPU of similar speed (FSX doesn't take advantage of multi-threading that much).

In addition it's 32 bit so it will never use more than 4GB of RAM. So you don't need a PC with a very large amount of memory.

Finally, you said you're going to use a mouse but I highly recommend getting a 3-axis joystick with a throttle slider, you can get one for less than $50, for example this one: https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-963290-0403-Extreme-Joystick-Windows/dp/B00009OY9U/ref=pd_lpo_vtph_147_bs_tr_t_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=3E3JMB4KXRFV43SKRAQT

For joysticks, I would recommend the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro. I have used it for several years and it is an amazing joystick. I've since upgraded to a Saitek x52, but you cannot beat the Logitech for its price.

There isn't one best plane to practice SB in. Decide what you want to fly and practice in that.

With airplanes you have crews for, you can go to test flight and set up a fight with AI aircraft. I would recommend a significant amount of time practicing here. Quickly and smoothly putting the nose of your aircraft where you want to shoot with a joystick takes a lot of time to learn, at least in the test flight mode you can quickly get a fair engagement which makes practicing a lot easier.

The other thing to consider is downloading the War Thunder CDK. Then you can create custom missions to practice whatever you want. Unlike in test flight you can fight an enemy one on one and you can put each other wherever you want - this way you don't have to always practice head on engagements.

Since always are fools for pay any price, nothing "wrong" with this IsaacTronics price - specially for a discontinued product. :)

The only joystick that Logitech continue "manufacturing" (by 3rd party OEM) - besides re-pack Saitek's - is this:

That's a really flimsy joystick. It broke (within 2 weeks of purchase) the first time it fell from the top of my table.

u/Pi-Roh · 1 pointr/AskGames

You don't always need to set the axis to it. A lot of them have an analog stick where your thumb would be.

Like this. Though it is for right-handers.

u/Rami512 · 1 pointr/EliteDangerous

So I'm ready to get myself a Flight stick for Elite. I was looking at these two:

Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS X

Logitech Extreme 3D Pro

I haven't really decided yet even after watching reviews, so I thought I could get some help comparing them.I'm fairly new to the game, but I want a better experience. What would people recommend here? (Pros, Cons.. Explanations why yes or not...)

Please keep in mind that I'm a complete newbie. I probably won't understand terms/slang

u/marlowe221 · 1 pointr/EliteBountyHunters

That looks pretty cool. I'm using this:

Logitech Extreme Pro 3D

It works well, though it doesn't have all the available buttons of a true HOTAS setup so I do use some easy to reach keyboard commands for non-life and death functions.

I've had to do a little adjustment for my (very) recent foray into combat though.

u/mr-peabody · 1 pointr/arma

That's what I have and it works just fine for me. Link

u/MiddleNI · 1 pointr/Warthunder

Depends on what gamemode you are playing. There are three, and they are all very different.

To me what it boils down to is that the mouse if much more precise, with laserlike aiming. The joystick has better movement control, and the things you can do with your plane are amazing.
You can use mouse, but I personally recommend playing with a joystick in Realistic and Simulator. Think of it as arcade without a lead indicator and more realistic plane movement.

http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Extreme-Joystick-Silver-Black/dp/B00009OY9U Is the joystick I use, you may be able to find it cheaper elsewhere but I don't know.

u/Pinworm45 · 1 pointr/EliteDangerous

Personally, I really like my CYBORG V1. It's very cheap (under 25$). I can not comment that it would 'work best' though.

A similar joystick people seem to like for the same priceish is this one by logitech: http://www.amazon.ca/Logitech-Extreme-Joystick-Silver-Black/dp/B00009OY9U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1416884982&sr=8-1&keywords=logitech+joystick

I only have experience with these two cheaper ones and can't comment on others

u/adeafblindman · 1 pointr/EliteDangerous

If anything get a basic logitech joystick

u/misterwizzard · 1 pointr/EliteDangerous

Do yourself a favor and buy a cheap stick or low-end HOTAS setup.

I started with a Saitek Cyborg and KBD, worked well. It has a good helping of buttons, Z-Axis (twist the stick for YAW) and an integrated analog throttle which is a must have IMO.

Personally I moved up to a HOTAS Watrhog which is a $450 set. My buddy is running on This stick and This Throttle and has just about as much functionality as me. More if you take into account the Warthog doesn't have a Z axis on the stick!

u/Thuraash · 1 pointr/hoggit

Hope you got your fullscreen issue sorted out.

For joysticks... err... how much money do you want to spend? There's something in every price range, but you'll get your money's worth with any of them. You don't need a very expensive piece of hardware to have a great time. I'm using a Sidewinder Force Feedback 2 I bought in 2001, and it's a blast! That said, HOTAS is very nice.

<$30: Logitech Extreme 3D Pro - Get this if you just want something to get you in the air. If you set two of the base buttons to be "modifiers" in the DCS control setup, they'll function like shift keys and effectively give you three sets of the remaining ten keys and HAT. This is also a good stick if you just want something to get you started and intend to move on to a HOTAS soon.

$50-60: Thrustmaster T16000M - Much more precise and significantly better quality. From what I've seen, the centering tension is also better than the Logitech. If you aren't going to drop some money on a HOTAS in the near future, I would recommend going for this instead of the Logitech. It's on back-order, but BH has one of the better prices for this stick. Most places are trying to sell it for ~$70.

Microcenter also appears to have the T16000M on sale for a ridiculously cheap $25. I have no idea why, but there it is. At $25, assuming they're not selling you a box with a picture of the stick, that is an absolute steal.

$80-120: This is HOTAS territory. The Saitek X52 is pretty much the gold standard for starter HOTAS setups, and most people just stick with it. There are plenty of people here who have them. Just ask people about them on the IRC.

$200: You can get a Saitek X-55 for this price, but there have been some reports of quality control issues. It's a very new stick, so you might end up on the wrong side of any teething issues its manufacturing process runs into. Still, it's quite feature-rich, and we've got a few forum members who own them, too.

$450+: Thrustmaster Warthog. It has an absolutely sterling reputation, and by all accounts is the best HOTAS setup on the market right now.

More important than an expensive joystick is a headtracking setup, though. If you don't want to drop a ton of money and can't get both HOTAS and headtracking, I'd get a mid-range joystick like the T16000M and headtracking hardware.

The genuine article (TrackIR 5) works best, but it's pricey. I kludged together my Opentrack setup with a $9 PS3 Eye (didn't even have to remove the IR filter), a few resistors and IR LEDs off Digikey (shipping cost more than the parts, and shipping was under $5), an old "9V" AC-DC adapter I had lying around (actual output 13V!!!) and some photograph film negatives to function as a visible light filter. It works pretty damn well!

u/Aarenas52 · 1 pointr/Vive

you should Check out DCS. its a flight sim. you can get into it with a $30 usd joystick logitech por 3d or a bit more ($15 more for a better one) the thrustmaster. anyways. DCS is free and you get 2 free planes. even if you dont fly right now im sure it will look great with the vive. its the only reason i want one really. i hear the oculous rift may be better for sims but i also want room experiance so yea vive.

u/VirtualFrisbey · 1 pointr/oculus

Yeah man, Robocop is one of the first experiences I thought of, such a crazy world to recreate! And its an absolutely perfect fit for the DK2/CV1 - Since Robocop sees through a visor, the feeling of having the headset on will feel natural and easy for people to get in to. Another great thing is that Robocop doesn't run, so the pacing of the first person experience should be nice and comfortable and motion sickness should (hopefully) not come into play.

Hopefully your crew can get your hands on some new peripherals soon, from all accounts your guy's mod is awesome stuff, it would be great if y'all had the chance to work with more devices. Regarding the flight stick, I don't really know much about flight sim hardware, but there was a thread in here the other day raving about the [Logitech Xtreme 3D Pro Joystick] (http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Extreme-Joystick-Silver-Black/dp/B00009OY9U), with multiple people backing OPs claims that it was an awesome device for the price and made E:D 1000x more enjoyable. For $30, it might be something you want to look into!

Regarding the input glove, I'm with you. I think thats definitely going to end up being the best option when combined with a gun-style hard peripheral. Somebody the other day had a good idea about a XB 360 style controller that could separate into Wii style nunchuks and also be snapped back together in the shape of a gun, I thought that was pretty ingenious. But regarding the glove, [have you seen this yet?] (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1663270989/project-perception-neuron) I had started sketching up some glove prototypes a couple weeks ago, and they look almost exactly like that! The guys seem to have a great, functionally sleek design and are aiming at a fairly reasonable price, considering you'll get 10 trackers in the standard package. This is a Kickstarter I could definitely see getting behind, but I just can't see myself committing to much of anything until the Oculus peripheral is revealed. It looks great though, and I'm definitely going to be keeping an eye on them!

u/SpaceNavy · 1 pointr/Vive

I would argue that you could get away with using the Extreme 3D Pro for ED.

HOTAS really should only be used for flight sims like DCS imo. So if you are interested in those as well, I've personally had issues with the X52 Saitek, and even then you should only get that if you are SERIOUS about flight sim. But based on your post I'd wager you aren't, so I would go with the T-Flight Hotas X

u/SomeRandomGamer3 · 1 pointr/csgouk

Personally I use two joysticks like these: https://www.amazon.com/Extreme-3D-Pro-Joystick-Windows/dp/B00009OY9U You get so much control. You can get 360 noscopes across the map if you know how to use them!

u/Noctrin · 1 pointr/EliteDangerous

i picked up one of these on sale at NCIX for 30$

http://www.amazon.ca/Logitech-Extreme-Joystick-Silver-Black/dp/B00009OY9U

It's simple and not flashy, but works really well. I never owned an expensive controller to compare, but it feels solid, it has a wide base and is very stable, only real downside is the throttle is not full reverse-forward, but only forward. You can map it in game to make it do both, but it makes it awkward to use..

Controls are very accurate, with a bit of deadzone settings, you can easily negate the effects of how your hand rests on it. Overall, it's miles better than keyboard and mouse and much better than my xbox controller. For 30$ the price was also right.

u/mrtheman260 · 1 pointr/flightsim

> not looking for the complexity of FSX

FSX can be as simple or as complex as you'd like. You can load up the game, not touch any options, then hit the big "fly now" button and be up in the air within minutes. Or you can buy all the payware aircraft and addons and spend up to 30 minutes sitting on the ramp learning how to start up your bird.

My suggestion (since this is how I did it) start with all the default, free stuff and fly around some places you know in real life. Then if you've decided you're serious about this, slowly begin adding in some extra stuff. I suggest picking up the Logitech 3D Pro joystick and FSX: Steam Edition when it goes on sale.

u/WearingAStupidManSui · 1 pointr/AlienwareAlpha

Haven't used it but I've been basing my opinion based off videos on youtube
like this one for example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GKuO9M0WuMg

Plus I read A LOT of reviews on steam and the general consensus that I got was that it is great for anything other than FPS, unless you want that controller feel
Also, a lot of the reviews talk about how they break fairly easily and I'm not the best at holding my temper during PVP games

It is on sale for 35$ right now and that's couple dollars more for a brand new joystick so maybe you'll convince somebody else looking at this post but not me

I am really feeling (amazon.com/Extreme-3D-Pro-Joystick-Windows/dp/B00009OY9U/) + a mouse would be optimal for me if I knew it was going to work

u/airencracken · 1 pointr/gaming

I got a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro. Playing TIE-fighter all over again is fantastic. Tons of memories and the gameplay is still rock solid.

I don't know why they don't make space sims anymore. :/

u/KamikazeSexPilot · 1 pointr/battlefield3

I used to fly in BF2 & Project Reality with this badboy It did me well. But I'm not sure if there has been any confirmation on joystick support for the full release. But the beta currently does not support joysticks.

u/metalspork · 1 pointr/battlefield3

There's actually a smaller throttle on the single joystick that controls acceleration.
http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Extreme-Joystick-Silver-Black/dp/B00009OY9U/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1318403940&sr=8-1
It's the small black tab right under the joystick in the picture. The Logitech Attack 3 also has a throttle there. In games with proper joystick support, the acceleration is linear.

u/Draewa · 1 pointr/flightsim

What are you looking for in terms of flight control hardware? What kind of aircraft do you want to fly in? Also, what's your budged?

If you just want an inexpensive stick that covers all the basics, get a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro. Sets you back only ~$26 and will probably serve you well for a long time.

If you want to go for a realistic experience, I'd recommend getting the following hardware (ordered by importance, obviously subjective):

  • A proper controller: Depending on what you want to fly there are several high-end control systems that will allow you to control your aircraft in a more realistic way. For military aircraft, you should take a look at the CH Fighterstick and throttle, the Saitek X52 Pro or, if you're rich, the Thrustmaster Warthog. I have no experience with the CH stuff, but I've owned several X52s over the years. It's true that you will probably not find a similarly featured controller for that price, but you should know that the X52 has some serious issues. More info here. Long story short, Saitek has some serious problems with quality control and your mileage with the X52 will pretty much depend on whether you get a good unit or not.
The Warthog is insanely good, but also insanely expensive.
If you want to fly general aviation aircraft, I recommend looking at the CH Yoke or the Saitek Pro Flight Yoke. Both are solid, affordable yokes that will make for a pretty good experience. If you want to get serious, keep an eye on the Iris Dynamics Force Feedback Yoke. It's not out yet, but it promises to be an affordable simulation-grade yoke with realistic force feedback - Keep in mind that "affordable" means ~$800 in this case.

  • Head tracker: Head tracking is an absolute game changer. It will make your sim experience magnitudes more immersive and enjoyable. TrackIR 5 is probably the easiest way to get head tracking going, but it's pretty damn expensive. Also, NaturalPoint, the company making TrackIR, is frequently coming under fire for iffy business practices and anti-consumer behavior. Read more here. If you want an alternative, take a look at FreeTrack or FaceTrackNoir.

  • Rudder pedals: A twisty stick is okay, but to get precise input you will definitely need proper pedals. I own Saitek Pro Flight Rudder Pedals and I'm very happy with them. They are pretty comfortable and adjustable. If you want to go for realism, I'd recommend the CH Pedals - they have a much steeper angle and are closer to what you'd find in a real aircraft.

  • Multiple monitors: Having three monitors is a definite plus. The wider field of view will definitely help you on the immersion front (having peripheral vision in your sim is pretty great) and in combination with a head tracker you'll get an awesome visual experience from them. If you want to go crazy, add a touchscreen to your setup like this guy. Keep in mind that running a multi-monitor setup requires a beefy GPU.

As far as addons go, I unfortunately only have experience with FSX. For FSX there are some addons that I consider essentials:

  • Accu-Feel: An amazing addon that adds lots of dynamic sounds and physics. Accu-Feel makes your sim feel much more authentic and fun.
  • EZCA: A camera plugin that adds dynamic head movements and snap views. Works very well with TrackIR. EZCA will make turbulences, g-forces and ground movements feel much better.
  • FTX Global: A graphics addon that gives FSX good ground textures, buildings, trees and more. Makes FSX look pretty nice even without tons of scenery/shader/texture packs.
  • Active Sky Next: A weather addon that adds realistic weather systems, cloud textures and even friggin' tornadoes! Looks and feels much better than FSX's default weather.

Sorry for not being able to recommend any X-Plane addons. I haven't tried that sim and have absolutely no experience with it.

I hope you found something useful in this wall of text. Anyways, welcome back to the hobby, have fun! :)

Edit: Swapped out the video with one that fits better.

To this day the X-Wing series are some of my all time favorite games. You may be interested to know that the series is for sale at Good Old Games and works on modern PCs.

https://www.gog.com/game/star_wars_xwing_special_edition

Having purchased them when they came out, I have to say... the graphics are as bad as you think, but the gameplay is still as sweet as you remember.

Edit: And if you can't find your old joystick, they're still sold on Amazon... I have this one. Edit2: lol, out of stock. >< Here's some others.

u/GSlayerBrian · 1 pointr/spaceengineers

That is a shame, and all the more reason I eagerly await Star Citizen. I know it won't be the perfect space game for me, but I feel that it will come closer than anything since Star Wars Galaxies. (Although while I have high hopes for it, I doubt it will surpass SWG's breadth, at least in my mind.)

And I agree about flying with a controller. It's better than a keyboard, but it certainly isn't a joystick.

In my day, I used a trusty Logitech Extreme 3D Pro as my daily driver, an upgrade from the very awesome but somewhat lower build quality Saitek ST290.

u/M0b1u5 · 1 pointr/EliteDangerous

Better than that even!

A GREAT stick, for just $34.99 This is the best stick on the market for ED - bar none. You'll note I said it's the best for ED - it's not the best for flight simulation, which ED isn't!

Then, when you have become accustomed to using a stick, which can take a while (think "gentle", and "subtle") you will have saved enough to buy the best throttle ever made.

Thanks!
