>I really find it a weird approach. Why would we suddenly throw up our hands and start talking hazy religious talk.

I read a book recently about the big creative-genius psychological theorists like Jung and Reich: " the structure of a theorist's metapsychology will duplicate the structure of his subjective world, laid down mainly by the critical formative events of his life.", to quote a reviewer. Put another way, these guys tended to reify their grounding metaphors and, for defensive reasons, not realise that was what they were doing.

I think what happened was they then developed groups of esoteric or even cultish followers, who were predisposed to agree with their grounding assumptions - hence the factionalism of early psychoanalysis.

Esotericism was a big influence on Jung.

Wilhelm Reich's story is a terrible one. (Reich's theories are behind the article /u/tomsonreddit linked to).
Reich's preoccupation with sexual liberation vs societal death forces can be traced back to his childhood. As a kid he was indirectly implicated in his mother's suicide after he blabbed to his abusive father about her infidelity . Her first suicide attempt happened in the next room before Reich had even finished blabbing.
As an adult, Reich had some interesting insights about character armour, then went on to develop increasingly psychotic, L. Ron. Hubbard-level crackpot systems complete with alien conspiracy theories.

I guess the intersubjective perspective is not to completely write off all of the theorists' insights, but to acknowledge that our interpretive lenses themselves require interpretation.
How much these guys are worth paying attention to at all, is an open question. Suffice to say I wouldn't take Reich's 'life force' schtick too seriously. I can see already in the comments to that article, people's thinking veering in potentially damaging directions.
As I've suggested before, I think on the internet it's generally safer to aim at a cosmopolitan audience rather than cultivate an esoteric one.
