As far as I am aware there is only the novelization of the movie, no other official novels. A couple novels were initially proposed I believe but Joss shot them down as he didn't have the time to be involved creatively. There are a couple short stories in the companion books like Still Flying (https://www.amazon.com/Firefly-Flying-Celebration-Whedons-Acclaimed/dp/1848565062) but that may not tickle your itch.
Outside of that there are plenty of fan-fic but I am not familiar with that community at all so I have no suggestions there.
You could also try the fan podcasts if you haven't already, the major ones are: The Signal, Firefly Talk and Sending a Wave. Only Sending a Wave is still being made, but The Signal especially had many great sections that I think stand the test of time. They include discussions about different aspects of the show, some audio drama fan-fic and interviews with cast members (mainly in the first season which was the run up to the movie). Firefly Talk was more fan run, featuring fan submitted essays. Sending a Wave is more focused on the fan community, they include interviews with the organisers for some of the fan run events and discussions about cons and screenings that the podcast hosts have been to.
Well even though it isn't space I do recommend Red Dead Redemption. It's got a more serious tone than Firefly, but it's still on the level.
Stargate: Universe, from what I've seen, has been pretty good. My dad loves watching it - it's an ensemble in space - might be up your alley?
Definitely check out the comic books on amazon of Firefly/Serenity, though to fight off the depression just a little bit longer.
If you're a bookworm with a deep pocket, here's a list of books on Amazon:
Serenity Vol 1
Serenity Vol 2
Serenity Vol 3
Serenity: Leaves on the Wind
Firefly The Official Companion Volumes One and Two
Firefly: Still Flying
Firefly: A Celebration
Don't forget about Still Flying. Which has short stories in the Fireflyverse, written by the writers of the show.
