Excellent post! I love the raspberry pi idea! Thanks for your research. I was too busy detecting to find all the stuff you found.

In my theory of this concept, FOSS would make up for the initial lack of profitability. Meaning that people like us would contribute time and effort with nothing in return, and a standard control box and pcb kit would be made available, for the really low cost. We could have the option of plugging the rasberry pi with a display into it like the LCD meters that are still used with minelab sovereigns.

As I mentioned above, I am definitely thinking that it should use the cheap 8" Fisher CC coil that the F2 uses, (http://www.amazon.com/Fisher-Search-Coil-Metal-Detectors/dp/B00938WWVA) with the option of putting the 11" DD on there...

The first generation model would be an enthusiast model, but cheaper pi and improvements could eventually lead to a FOSS competitor.

Think of Linux, basically it is a open source version of code written for Unix for AT&T 30-40+ years ago, developers compiled it, improved it, get it to run on everything, and distribute it for just the prestige of saying they did it. Same thing with the schematics and designs on geotech!

I get a charge out of daydreaming this stuff up. I am not an implementer. I am more of an idea architect.
