I have a Fiskars reel mower and it works great for my small (600 sq.ft.), flat Bermuda lawn. Bermuda likes to be kept cut short which is convenient because reel mowers don't do well with grass longer than about 4 inches.

I like how this mower throws the clippings out the front. I've had it for 2 seasons now and haven't sharpened the blades. Still cuts fine, but I'll probably sharpen them over the winter.

I recently added a 20'x20' patch of grass to my lawn. I got a mechanical lawn mower (link). It's great.

I too bought a reel mower, though I was a bit fancier, and bought one of these Fiskar's Momentum mowers. From past experience using reel mowers, I knew that easy adjustability was important, and I felt that the added benefit of the flywheel mechanism would make mowing easier.

I love the thing so far. And I especially love not having to buy gas. I also got a cordless electric weed eater, and so far my lawn care regimen is gasoline free.

Gas is even worse than electric. It causes you to break out. Instead you want this

I used the Fiskars reel mower (marketed back then as the "Momentum") on my quarter-acre yeard for a while. Supposedly it works "better" than traditional reel mowers, something about providing additional torque for the reel or some-such.

As for performance, I found it gave a nice, clean and even cut provided that I didn't let the grass get too tall before hand, or let too many thick-stemmed weeds shoot up, like dandelions and such. Those tend to just bow over underneath the reel and pop back up again once you're past. That might not be such a problem for me now, as I prefer to pull those bastards out by the root nowadays, but at the time it was a beastly incentive to mow frequently.

Also, a reel mower is going to work best on relatively smooth terrain - bumps, dips and large tree roots make it a pain to get an even cut.

To be perfectly honest, though, I lost the battle after a year or so of use and decided to go with an electric (cordless) mower. It gave the the flexibility to miss a weekend without feeling like I had to go back over the lawn with a trimmer. I honestly prefer the look/feel of a reel-mowed lawn, though, and supposedly its healthier for the grass as well.

Depending on your yard size and your lazy level, these are an awesome option. No gas, can play music on your outdoor speakers, its quiet so u can wait till 9 pm in July to mow. Blades only need proffessional re-sharpening every 4 years. And its a nice little work out, however this model specifically is much easier to push than other models.

I've been using that 20 inch Scotts mower for the last 3 years. Works great, but extra long grass and twigs are a pain (which is true for all reel mowers). Reel mowers tend to "skip" the long grass, especially if it's laying down, and small twigs will bring the mower to an abrupt halt. I kind of wish I paid a bit more for the Fiskars 6201... not that it would solve any of those problems.

I'll stick with reel mowers unless I ever get an extremely large yard. Super quiet, lightweight, and relatively maintenance free.

I bought this fiskars real mower last year. First time I've ever used one and its a breeze! Its fun actually, and the best part its completely quite. I go out on cool summer nights and cut my lawn with the flood lights on and no one hears it but me.

I use it on a 1/4 acre and it takes about 30 minutes, not hard but a nice little workout for those of us who sit around too much.

I have the Fiskars push reel mower and it works well and has really great reviews. I have had it for 6 months and I have a fairly large yard. It has worked well for me, though it does not work well cutting weeds in the grass as they just bend, but this is true of all reel mowers

I bought this guy from amazon a few years ago and I liked it so much I used to look for vacant homes in my neighborhood to mow. It was so easy to use and you literally cannot find a more eco-friendly option. Old school push mower with modern technology, can't beat it.

Speaking of lawn service, I have a new, old school reel mower for our yard. Pretty convenient that I don't have to worry about gas, mechanical parts, or noise while I'm cutting the yard.

I have Fiskar's reel lawnmower. Extremely easy to set up and start mowing. Once you get the hang of it, mowing is a piece of cake. Keep in mind that you will face the usual reel mower hangups like too much grass in the blades causing it to jam, in which case, you'll have to back pedal a bit and remove the grass, etc. If you cut grass often and at smaller depths, you'll be more than happy.

I'm a big fan of old reel mowers ... Until I bought a new'ish Fiskars reel mover. What a delight! The new mechanical details on this push mower makes the old mowers I've used seem antiquated. I hope the Fiskars lasts me a lifetime.

I bought one and LOVE it. Seems a bit retarded to spend this much on a push mower... but if you’re going to buy a gas mower, you'll be close to that cost. Add the bennie of no gas and the con of needing to purchase the separate grass catcher (helps keep the thatch to a reasonable level). It pushes much easier than I expected.

I personally think the modern ones are better, because the technology has improved over time. I use this one. But I would recommend getting one of the 18" ones so that you don't have to make as many passes. My friend has this one and he really likes it. Just make sure that you keep the blades clean and oiled after you cut the lawn and they'll stay sharp for a really long time. Btw, reel mowers are best when your lawn is flat and smooth. If it's very lumpy, then you'll get really frustrated.

u/adamonline45 · 1 pointr/gardening

If you do go push-mowing, I have been doing some shopping for a push mower, and decided on the Fiskars 18" StaySharp. I would look at it before you go electric, as well.

I'm assuming you're relatively fit!

I've had a Fiskars reel mower for a year with 0 problems, 0 maintenance, 0 fuel.

I commented further up, but I may as well chime in here too:

I have a Fiskars Momentum (this one, now called the Staysharp) and I love it. Between how utterly quiet it is (your neighbors will sound like they are mowing with jets in comparison) and never having to gas up, I don't think I'd go back to a gas mower unless I had really difficult grass (this mower does not handle those round grass stalks well).

Go for a high quality reel mower. This one I have, and it works great on my slightly larger than 1/4 acre property. Takes me about an hour and a half (with a few breaks) to mow. Reel mowers don't require any gas or electricity, just powered by you.
