They were very close in dates. Late 1984 for the start of hfcs use, and new coke came out April (I think) 1985.

However, it's more a coincidence than a plan. New coke was developed to combat the rising sales of Pepsi, as the cola wars seemed to slipping more and more into pepsi's favour. So Coke did a series of tests and found that the new coke flavour was testing more favourably in blind tests than both coke and pepsi.

So they pushed it to market. Of course, history tells us that people hated that they had changed coke and they resented new coke for it.

It's actually very interesting.
