Hey, I JUST came off building a setup and it cost me $750 total. We have 3 plants in there right now. I have the entire list with amazon links or store suggestions.

Item| Price | Where To Buy
---|---|----
Tent| $95| We bought this one, I don't know if it's worth spending a lot on anything more expensive. For a smaller option I just got a second with good reviews but can't vouch for it yet.
Lights/Hood/Ballast| $140| I got the 600W set, but 400W would make cooling MUCH easier and still get a big yield. For LEDs at similar price, Viparspectra 300W x2 or a single 600W eliminates need for extra cooling potentially (not included here, we used fans from around the house)
ph Test+Control Kit | $25| GET THIS. The water must be pH'd properly for your babies' health.
Cloth Pots| $20 | These are better for aeration, water flow, training, etc. Cheap and reusable too.
Nutrients | $50 | I got the Fox Farms Trio, but there are many good options out there.
Fan + Filter | $150 | This is huge and might be overkill for you. Make sure whatever you get fits your tent vents (This one fits the Apollo tent above with 6" vents).
Ducting | $20 | Connect fan to filter, to tent, to wherever. Might want multiple sizes, check tent vent sizes.
Foil Tape, Metallic | $10 | Here. Metal Duct tape is best duct tape.
Fan Speed Controller | $20 | Useful for if you do get a fan that is slightly overkill!
Fox Farms Ocean Forest | $15 - $40 | You can buy it online and I did for my first 3 bags....then I found it in a local store for $15. There is some controversy with FF lately, it's not organic FYI. There are tutorials on making your own soil if you care, but I like this because I didn't have to use nutes for 3-4 weeks.
Humidifier | $30 | This is the exact one I have. We're in winter so I need it to keep humidity up, you may not.
Dehumidifier | $40 | There are plenty for this much. You may not need this either.
Cal-Mag | $20 | I haven't needed it yet but it's best to have on hand if you do!
Seeds | $75 | I bought from Attitude, chose stealth, and bought like 15 seeds?, so it was expensive. You can get seeds for less.
Jiffy Pellets | $10 | Used to start seeds. There are other options.
Total | $745 | If you buy all this stuff, you have potentially even more than you need to get started, with room for 3-4x more plants than these boxes, and with nutrients to last you for a long long time!

Hope this helps! I'd hate to see you drop so much on it when you don't need to at all.

Beginners mistake, very common. Don't use miracle grow. Use something like the FoxFarms Trio https://www.amazon.com/Fox-Farm-FX14049-Nutrient-Formula/dp/B00572026S

For now you just need Grow Big for veg, when you get to flowering time start feeding it Tiger bloom, the difference between the bottles is the ratio of each nutrient, bloom nutes are higher in P and K while veg is higher in N.

And watering is easy. After you water it, feel how heavy it is. Get a gauge for that, and check it every day as the plant consumes water, eventually it will be as light as it will get and the plant may get to the point of dehydration where the leaves will tuck inward, don't let it get that dry, water a day before that. Soon enough you'll totally get it. Also stick your finger in the top of the soil for about 1-2" down and feel how the dryness changes and use that and weight of the pot.

You may also need a bottle of Calmag at some point https://www.amazon.com/Advanced-Nutrients-Sensi-Cal-Mag-250mL/dp/B01D1Y9QAQ

Good to have handy.

You also need to make sure your water PH is in the acceptable range, probably by adding a weak acid to lower the PH https://www.amazon.com/General-Hydroponics-Liquid-Fertilizer-1-Quart/dp/B00CJID1I4

Also a PH testing kit like this https://www.amazon.com/General-Hydroponics/dp/B000BT32UA

Here's the basics https://www.reddit.com/r/microgrowery/wiki/faq

I've gotten in to growing recently and really enjoy it :) I hop you do too stranger.

Thanks!

Sure... I just uploaded another image to the album showing each part of the irrigation system. http://i.imgur.com/kuTPh3C.png

The pot is inside a cut out bottom of a bucket about 2 inches tall to catch any runoff water. The plan is to leave it there to keep the humidity about 50-70% inside the bucket. If it goes higher then that water can be drained very easily.

So the irrigation system is very simple, it uses PVC pipes to go from the outside into the inside of the bucket and it contains a valve (2) that can be used to control the flow of the water. So, I pour the water into the bottle (1), it goes down the hose (3), and it's then evenly dispersed by the PVC pipes (4), these PVC pipes have holes in them (5) and it goes around the stem of the plant to get water everywhere.

Regarding nutrients. I bought the these ones that I'm planning to use depending on the stage I'm in (vegetative vs flowering). With these nutrients you just prepare the mix with water and then you irrigate. You just need to control the pH before adding any nutrients (it should be between 6.5 and 6.8) and once the nutrients are added you have to control the EC (electrical conductivity), this one depends on the stage again (it should be around 0.9 during the vegetative stage and between 1.5 and 2.0 during flowering). Remember that you don't add any nutrients during the germination and seedling stages and during these stages the pH should be between 6.5 and 6.8 and the EC should be around 0.4.

u/Combative_Douche · 5 pointsr/microgrowery

For veg/clones you should be using 6500k lights or T5 lights, not 2700k. 2700k is for flowering.

That soil says "feeds up to 4 months". In general, you don't want soil with built-in fertilizer. Get the FF soil and some perlite. You're going to want 25-40% of the mix to be perlite.

Don't use Miracle Grow. Go with Fox Farms Trio or GH GO Box. If you really want to save money on nutes (you don't), grab some fish fertilizer ($8 at Home Depot) for veg and Morebloom ($6 at Home Depot) for flowering. If you go with the cheap nutrient options, it'll show, but it's better than nothing.

HID isn't complicated. You don't need to be smart to set it up. A system like this comes with everything you need. Any real light system (including LED) is going to require ventilation (inline fan and duct).

Good luck! Keep us updated.

I believe the plants can feed off of what is in the soil. But then you can also add nutients to the water to feed them.

That yellowing is because she is hungry. Go spend $36 on Amazon and order a nutrient kit. Use half the recommended label amount and she'll grow big. Fox Farm Liquid Nutrient Trio Soil Formula https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00572026S/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_PgGIzbS5S8E0V

u/Justintime233 · 2 pointsr/microgrowery

I'm using the Fox Farms Trio, it works great so far. Easy to use and has everything you need. It's not tooo expensive either.

A lot of people use General Organics too.

u/UsogosU · 2 pointsr/microgrowery

Thanks! I thought the same thing when i saw those leaves develop!
The younger ones "wriggle" so much as they're growing in, it's awesome to look at.

I'm using 2 of these lights they were cheap but had pretty great reviews. so far so good.

Standard Fox Farm Nutes with Cal mag too.

Soil is just organic stuff from amazon

I went pretty cheap on the supplies, but so far so good.

edit: just adding quantity of lights.

I replied to your title but now see your post.

When you say “room temperature” what’s the actual temperatures? I know people in cold climates tend to have cooler homes than the average “room temperature” where I am in San Diego. Our homes tend to be about 22c. Which is ideal. If your home is around 16c the plant is not going to do well.

You’re growing in soil. So you’ll need good soil like this

If I were going to start growing with my current knowledge I’d start with no less than this light in 3000k. which is good for one medium size plant. Which is all I’d recommend you start with. Pick your best/biggest/strongest plant after 2.5 weeks. Kill the rest. Fortunately you don’t need to feed the plant until it’s about 4” tall.

You’ll need a simple light timer.

Good nutrients

An oscillating fan

and a pot

If you’re worried about smell(and it will make your whole home reek at the end) then you’ve got a whole new can of worms. Grow tent, filtration, ventilation etc..

And a lot of reading

Grab these and use as directed every other watering. You will have a bountiful harvest

u/pwnytailjoe · 2 pointsr/microgrowery

I use Floranova Grow/Bloom. Before that nothing really. I'm anxiously interested in trying Kushman's Veganics line...probably next year sometime, it looks like bank from what I've seen so far and I think it might be available only in gallons at this point.

My local hydro store matches or beats any price I can find, even online.

u/coleingular · 2 pointsr/malelivingspace

Definitely re-pot into a bigger pot, and probably move it away from the window a little bit. Some plants don't like direct sunlight and it burns them out (brown tips).

You could consider getting a bottle of nutrient mix and adding that in with your water every so often as well. I use Fox Farms Big Bloom & Grow Big on my plants every couple of weeks and sometimes see a noticeable difference in their growth.

u/pigs_have_flown · 1 pointr/SpaceBuckets

How's this?

u/snowmanjc · 1 pointr/GrowingMarijuana

They need a bigger pot to start with, they have outgrown that one (unless you are staying small). The leaves in the back look like they have mold (the white dusty spots) as it is in veg mode and growing a lot I would start with more nitrogen. Get your self this fox farm 3 pack of nute: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00572026S/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The Grow Big has 6% Nitrogen that really helps during veg. If that does not work post some more pics. What ever it is should get a bit worse and easier to diagnose.

u/Bossmanduu · 1 pointr/microgrowery

Thanks, I'll definitely look into better lighting. Of course i will be getting a pH pen but i plan on using Fox Farm since I've heard very good things.

u/MachineGum_throwaway · 1 pointr/microgrowery

You'll only get away with a couple of plants with that budget

400W HPS ballast

A timer for the 12/12 schedule

Nutrients

And the rest of the budget on as many 5 gallon buckets in which you'd drill drain holes and a proper quantity of organic soil.

Considering you don't mention if you already have seeds or clones, that can $30-$50.

Note that you will be missing on essentials:

  • pH testing equipment and pH balancing solutions

  • Smell control

  • Ventilation
u/tjandearl · 1 pointr/trees

fans create moving air so that will work, it just has to rustle the plant some which makes it bukl it's trunk up.

Feeding and watering, Water it daily to keep the soil moist and feed it once every few days while watering. Don't over water it you are correct, but you don't want to let the soil dry out. I use fox farm nutrients to feed my plants http://www.amazon.com/Fox-Farm-FX14049-Nutrient-Formula/dp/B00572026S/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1342701653&sr=8-1&keywords=fox+farms. It comes with a feeding schedule and you will want to mix it a 1/4 strength. You have some time to save up as potting soil generally has about a month worth of nutrients in it already.

You should grow it in the pot it will remain in it's whole life, I don't advise moving it but if you need to i'd do it now before it's root system becomes too complex. 1-2.5 gallons should be good for your first plant.

u/captaindaylight · 1 pointr/microgrowery

Ok so I looked up the prices for Sensi A and B grow, and at this point getting started I can't justify spending that amount at this time.

If I bought this Fox Farm Trio would it be all the different kinds of nutrients for a complete grow cycle? Keeping in mind I have already purchased a Ph tester kit that will arrive from amazon on Saturday.

Edit: Also, I compared the germinated seed that had been soaking with the rest of the seeds, and it has definitely increased in size so I went ahead and placed it in the Fox Farm Soil. When should I switch on the lights? Now or when their is some visible sign of the plant poking through the soil? Probably a dumb a question I realize...

u/mitch_feaster · 1 pointr/microgrowery

More info:

I have this LED grow light about 1 foot above. ~14 hours per day.

Outdoor (southern California).

Soil is Fox Farms' Strawberry Fields. I actually have half a dozen other plants in other soil that are much smaller than this lady, so apparently Strawberry Fields really is the good stuff!

Just started using this Fox Farms food on it last week.

u/Mitten_Punch · 1 pointr/microgrowery

FF Happy Frog is the potting soil, right? It won't be "hot" (lots of slow-release nutes) as you are being warned about.

Are your seeds feminized? I'm going to assume so and say: Go with five 3-gallon smart pots. Build a simple ScrOG net, grow them up through it, training them sideways as they grow tall. When you have tops in 80% of squares flip to 12/12.

Are the FF nutrients the Fox Farm Trio? If so, start using them at 1/4 strength after week three or so. Along with some CalMg. Use the schedule on their site, not what the bottles say. I use FF's Trio, less is more!

Here’s the full view. Sgt. Peppers
I also have another question if you have the time. I currently only have the Fox Farm Trio so would I just the Big Bloom or do I need to get something more specific for N?

Thanks

u/queen_greenthumbs · 1 pointr/trees

I know I don't have the most ideal conditions. I know my temps fluctuate too much, but this is the best I can do at the moment.

The bottle labeled "Plant Noms" is old. They're fed from three different containers, using Fox Farms' Liquid Nutrient Trio Soil Formula.

ETA: I use a 400W metal halide bulb for light, and they're in this tent.

Thanks for looking! :D

u/projhex · 1 pointr/Homebrewing

To add to what everyone else is saying... do you add any nutrients to your water or soil? My wife does a fair bit of gardening and has all kinds of liquid nutrient or fish fertilizer for her plants. The numbers X-X-X are the nutrient breakdown.

It does sound like nitrogen deficiency.

u/JuulJunkey · 1 pointr/microgrowery

Can’t believe anybody hasn’t mentioned feeding yet!! Proper nutrients are a key factor into making sure your plant develops to your standard. I’ll link a basic nutrient pack on amazon for you. This is a must! Click Me For Nutrients :)
