Thanks Keith... I try not to err too far in the direction of Wandism, and I'm glad the discussion moved into talking about likelihood/unlikelihood rather than impossibility.

One important shortcoming with probability-talk (including impossiblity-talk) is that it can hide the reflexivity of political thought - the facts are altered by our belief about the facts. Also, it reminds me of the important distinction between a decision and a prediction, which is often what we should be talking about when we talk about the existence or not of selves etc.

Sorry if that doesn't make sense, my brain's a little fried right now. I've been reading the book Frame Reflection: Toward the Resolution of Intractable Policy Controversies which advocates 'design rationality' in policy design...so the Chris Alexander connection is likely to be on point. Thanks.
