I also highly recommend Frenchmen, Desire, Good Children And Other Streets Of New Orleans. Super fascinating in that it relates history of different areas by street names and the sotries behind them.

I wasn't able to find your answer in the limited amount of free time I had tonight, but you may want to pick up a copy of John Churchill Chase's Frenchmen Desire Good Children And Other Streets Of New Orleans and see if it has some clues. If his book doesn't tell you, ask THNOC to see if they know. If you find out, post a reply to this comment so I can stop trying to dig the answer up and satisfy my own curiosity.

I can tell you that the street was originally named Jeanne St, after Jeanne Macarty (see also: Bartholomew Macarty's plantation - he wound up with Bartholomew St), and was renamed to Alvar in 1894.
