Dude, Mayday is right down your alley. It just wrapped its first 5-issue arc a week or two ago, but the trade should be coming in a month or so. It's a 60's-era Cold War espionage thriller (plenty of counter-intelligence, covert ops, etc.). I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Also -- trust me here -- G.I. Joe: Cobra is REALLY good. It's a serious take on the franchise. Chuckles is on a covert ops mission to infiltrate Cobra, but it's grounded in realism (i.e. a rendezvous at a shady opium den in Afghanistan goes sideways and devolves into a small-arms shootout). I picked up with low expectations and got much more than I bargained for. It deals with some heavy subject matter, like PTSD, the emotional strain of warfare, etc.

Lastly, the Brubaker-era Captain America stuff is very good. Based on the Marvel titles you enjoyed, I think you would like this as well. There's plenty of intrigue, covert missions, rogue players, etc.

Everyone's making great suggestions. Sounds like we're about the same age, and if there's any chance you used to play GI Joes as a kid, I'd highly recommend COBRA by Gage, Costa, and Fuso. It's amazing. You'll want to pick up Vol. 1, 2, and 4. You can skip Vol. 3.

Btw, how's your son liking the Star Wars comics?

I don't know what is or isn't canon, but I can't recommend this highly enough. Great comics, GI Joe or otherwise. There's multiple volumes and they're all so good.
