More than 8GB does make a difference in just a couple of games, like Just Cause 3 (I'd heard about the issue before I bought it, and assumed it was people playing it with loads of Chrome tabs open or something, as 8GB should be more than enough - but, nope, very occasional out-of-memory crashes to desktop here too).

So I wouldn't settle for 8GB for a new gaming build intended to last years, personally. And unless you can find some 6GB DIMMs, that means 16GB.

Memory speed absolutely does make a difference in some games. Do not get DDR4-2133. Take a look at Ryse running on 2133 memory here, where the frame rate nearly halves compared with 2666: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2015-intel-core-i3-6100-review

Personally, as we've seen RAM speed start to make significant differences in several titles since about 2015, I wouldn't go lower than 3200 (again, in a system intended to be used for years). My opinion is that we'll start to see the faster speeds of RAM make even more of a difference, or we'll see more and more titles perform better on faster RAM, or both.

The only problem is, RAM prices absolutely suck at the moment. :(

You could import RAM from another country if there's a better deal. Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.de will both remove their local sales tax at the checkout for you.

Here, just for a test, use your Amazon account to take these items all the way to checkout (but don't buy) :
https://www.amazon.de/G-Skill-Ripjaws-F4-3200C16D-16GVK-Arbeitsspeicher-DDR4-RAM/dp/B013J7FLO0
https://www.amazon.co.uk/G-SKILL-Ripjaws-F4-3200C15D-16GVR-DDR4-Memory/dp/B01ACOB4AI/

You'll see the list price drop, and they'll add on shipping and import fees at checkout (nothing else to pay on delivery). (Oh, and pay in £ for UK and let your card do the conversion - use xe.com to see the price in euros at checkout)

That should give you faster RAM for significantly less than 200e..?

Purchased an ASUS Z170-A mobo. Plan to put the following RAM in it:

G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series F4-3200C16D-16GVR 16 GB (8 GBx2) DDR4 3200 MHz C16 1.35 V

I've heard that you shouldn't update your BIOS unless you really need to. However, I've seen that some people have reported issues with getting their systems to boot once they enable the XMP profiles for their overclocked RAM without updating the BIOS beforehand. Not sure what I should do because I'm scared of bricking my board but I would like to utilise the faster RAM.

huh that's weird, because when I was able to boot back in I was still on F9d and then I attempted to do the same thing (force into the second BIOS) again, the PC refused to post, until I did it again. So I'm assuming that means I have one fuck up left. I also did remove the CMOS battery and reinsert it before attempting to boot into the backup BIOS and it did pretty much nothing (in the past that would solve all my problems)

I'm using G.Skill 3200mhz (8gbx2) 16gb kit and the Ryzen 5 1600x.

I also previously had the exact same RAM kit but in the 8gb version (4gbx2) and was able to run at 3200mhz perfectly
