Reading about Cousins' personality reminded me of when I read Fouth and One by Joe Gibbs book many years ago; I've misplaced my hard copy, but he constantly preached that character was more important than talent....

I couldn't find the particular quote I was looking for, but I did find this...

>Recently on the “Mike and Mike” ESPN morning show, Mark Schlereth, a former NFL player, said when he played for the Washington Redskins, Coach Joe Gibbs had two mantras:

>• Lose “yourself”; and

>• Great talent makes plays the first three quarters; great character makes plays in the fourth quarter.

>In my forty-four years of coaching, I found both of these statements to be absolutely true. In fact, I wish I had been aware of them when I was coaching. I certainly would have quoted Coach Gibbs to our players.

Something else that many of you may find much more interesting: while I couldn't find Fourth and One on Amazon, I did find a more recent book by Gibbs, and the kindle version happens to be on sale for $2.99. Game Plan for Life: Your Personal Playbook for Success

And this is how the book begins...

Chapter 1: No Game Plan, No Victory

>“Joe, I’ve got awful news. Sean Taylor was shot early this morning. He’s at Jackson Memorial in Miami.” It was 6:00 a.m. on a Monday, and I’d just been awakened by a call from my boss, Dan Snyder, the owner of the Washington Redskins.

>Sean Taylor was our superstar safety. He’d played in the Pro Bowl in 2006, and now in 2007 he was tied for most interceptions in the NFC, even though he’d missed the last two games. Some in the media said Sean had the talent to become one of the greatest NFL safeties of all time.

Gibbs, Joe (2009-07-08). Game Plan for Life: Your Personal Playbook for Success (p. 1). Tyndale House Publishers. Kindle Edition.

Oh yeah, and in case you guys didn't hear, Gibbs Racing just won its 4th title. Joe's history of success is simply amazing.
