Here's the ultimate strat: find grid paper that's kept in a roll (like so) and roll it out on your kitchen table. You can draw on it if you want, but what I think is better is buying a giant piece of clear laminate and putting it on top of the grid paper which you can then draw/erase over easily. The paper and laminate can then be rolled up and thrown in a closet or corner when not in use.

It's basically the easiest way I've found to turn a whole table into a grid.
