Upavasa, the Sanskrit word for fasting has etymology 'upa' (close) + 'vasa' residing nearby. The point being that reducing food consumption allows your mind to more clearly focus on the divine. This is usually done by repeating the divine name, singing songs or listening to stories about the devata, visiting a temple. All these lead to bhava( the divine mood/inspiration).

However, if the body is feeling weak due to the fast, this focus might be lost, so many people eat a fruit or drink some fruit juice. So, try to optimize your ability to focus on rather than being strict on the body. Of course, there are people who fast without drinking water too, which can have its own justification(discomfort burning bad karmas).

Among the Chaturthis, Angarki Chaturthi(Tuesday) is considered special. Also, the main festival of Ganesh is coming up on September 2. You can see all this on the Drik Panchang app.

For people who dont know Indian languages, most of the bhajans(which are a great for bhava) might be incomprehensible(but still have a good effect on listening). Still, there are some resources in English.

The Amar Chitra Katha comic on Ganesha for kids (but also an introduction for adults) is one of the best illustrated in the series. Of course, Ganesha isnt just a cute figure, but has a lot of deep inner insight associated with all his pastimes, which takes quite a bit of meditation and reading to uncover.

Some more resource links in an older comment. Note that doing a homa is somewhat difficult, but you can still go to a Ganesha temple and ask for a puja or homa to be done for you for some amount - this is what Hindus usually do.
