Supply and demand. There is a lot of demand for cars. There is not a lot of demand for a machine that inserts coils into books that have already been punched. The parts needed for cars are made in the bajillions. The parts needed for this are made in the thousands (at most) or machined individually, even.

You might be surprised at what some of the machines in your print center cost. I remember looking up some when I first started working for the company.

  • Countertop laminator - $1200
  • Binding punch - $2400 (dies sold separately, and we have 2 dies)
  • Comb spreader - $975
  • Paper folder - (the one my store has is discontinued, the one recommended for people looking for that one is $5400)
  • Employee-use rotary cutter - $500
  • Customer-use rotary cutter - $375
  • WF laminator - $3300
  • Ream cutter - $5200
  • Electric business card slitter - $5200
  • Manual business card slitter - $88
  • Tape binding machine - $3400
  • Coverbind machine - (has been discontinued, the closest one recommended which looks the same except for color and branding is $600)
  • Foam core cutter - (I could not find the GBC pro-cut 40, but this one is similar for Depot stores at $600 and the Max stores annoying Image Edge system is $145)
  • Stamp creator - $1000
  • Padding press - $300

I think I got everything but the copiers/printers, but let me know if I missed anything.

I still can't believe the price of that comb spreader. How is it worth almost $1000?? And I have a hard time believing the stamp machine is only $1000.
