anything with an FTDI chipset is your best bet these days - I see one other person recommending prolific, I have had nothing but bad luck with those, at least if you need anything above 9600 baud. I keep one of these in my bag:

On the software side, there is an excellent app on the app store called, cleverly enough, Serial. It's not free, but it works very well, and shouldn't require you to install any drivers. If you'd rather skip paying, minicom is in brew, that works well too.

Crash Cart adapter is a must have for me in my laptop bag.

Also a Gearmo USB-Serial adapter. I used to insist on an onboard serial port, but these days you are better off getting a smaller, lighter laptop IMO. This serial adapter works fantastically on windows 10 64 and has lights to show you which pins are in use. I highly recommend it:

Also I always carry a Null modem serial cable, a cisco console cable, a fluke toner, a spare 15 ft patch cable, a wireless mouse, and perhaps most importantly, a screw driver.

I think I got the same one off amazon https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AHYJWWG/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1. Made by Gearmo B00AHYJWWG. Works great on my Lenovo Thinkpad running Windows 10. It came with a disk but the windows drivers worked without me needing the disk.

Just bought this one, it has lights for connection and data transmission as well as working with my windows 8 laptop. I tested it with putty and a old cisco 3550.

I have one of these and it works perfectly without drivers on Windows 8.1 over USB3.

RJ-45 console cables are often propitiatory and different pins depending on the device :(

You'll need to use a USB -> Serial adapter then the proper cable that came with the device.

This is the model I use, it works good even on Windows 10: http://smile.amazon.com/Sabrent-Serial-RS-232-Converter-CB-DB9P/dp/B00IDSM6BW/

I do not recommend the IO Gear one. I haven't used it in years but unless they've done a much better job in recent years it was extremely buggy. It would often crash my terminal application. This is the one: http://smile.amazon.com/IOGEAR-Serial-RS-232-Adapter-GUC232A/dp/B000067VB7/

This one seems to have great reviews and some serial troubleshooting features: http://smile.amazon.com/GearMo-Adapter-Indicators-Windows-Support/dp/B00AHYJWWG/
