I also live in an apartment with a shared, coin laundry facility. Over four years of cloth diapering two kids I've experimented with what feels like hundreds of combos to wash and dry my diapers! Here is what currently works for us:

  • having a portable washer in our spare bathtub. For the longest time we had a twin tub portable washer but about 6 months ago I upgraded to this fully automatic portable washer. GAME CHANGER! I'm able to do back-to-back loads of diaper laundry at home and not have to worry about using the shared coin washing machine. (I've successfully cloth diapered with the twin tub model, in combination of the coin washing machines, but having the fully automatic portable has been so wonderful.)

  • For drying my diapers, half the time I dry in the coin laundry facilities ($1.50 for me), and the other half the time I dry the diapers on big folding drying racks and/or the ikea octopus-style drying racks. I have a tiny patio that barely fits the drying racks, most of the time I just have the drying rack set up in the house. Especially if the weather is cold or wet.

The one thing that stopped me from considering a diaper service is I knew my kiddos would start daycare at 4 months old and our daycare provider will only accommodate cloth diapers if they are pocket or all-in-one style diapers. The only diaper services in my area provide prefolds & covers only :( If that's not a concern for you then it sounds like a diaper service can be a great option for you!

I live in a tiny apartment without laundry hookups aswell and bought this portable washer in March of this year. I have nothing but good things to say about it as it does a pretty decent job of agitating the clothes and getting them clean. It has some useful custom settings so that you can select water levels, wash cycles, etc.. pretty useful, imo. I use it almost daily, often times, 2 - 3 times a day and it's still going strong after 7 months. It has an automatic pump to drain the washer and automatic fill which is super convenient. I just turn the faucet on, make sure the drain hose is in the tub, set it and forget it.

As for washing my gis and rash guards, I split them up into two separate washes to make sure each wash has enough room for proper water coverage and room for thorough agitation. Too full and your shit will have a hard time moving around in the washer. Don't get me wrong though, this washer is pretty powerful for it's size.

As for getting rid of your gear funk, this machine will get the job done as long as you use the right products. Try to stay away from normal clothing detergents and get yourself a specialized detergent made for sports gear like Tide Sports or Absolute detergent. They're a bit more expensive but it's worth it to know you won't be the one smelling like BO and ass-pants. I always throw in a little Oxy Clean and a quarter cup of Odoban in addition to the detergent to get rid of any and all stank, this includes using it for my rashguards. OxyClean for the extra clean and Odoban for that extra funk removal. Even if there isn't any funk I still use this method. If your shit is super funky like Ben Askren's stand-up game, drown your gear in that concoction for a few hours to a full day and it will come out. Odoban is an industrial odor remover and sanitizer used by professionals to get rid of the gnarliest of smells, including death. Homedepot carries a big jug for around $10; a little goes a long way.

TL;DR: Bought this washer on amazon for around $200. I've been using it daily since March of this year and it's still going strong.
Get rid of gear funk by using sports detergent, OxyClean, and a little bit of Odoban. The stronger the funk, the longer you should let your gear soak.
