So the real problem now is that X99 boards are no longer made, so getting a new one from a place like amazon is difficult.

But I've also gotten a different friend of mine to confirm his Gigabyte X99 board has never had that issue because they don't have the PLX chip at all. Here's one on amazon, but it's not new. You might have better luck with other sites. He uses a Gigabyte X99 UD4, but any of thier X99 boards that fits your GPU config should be fine.
