Frankly having owned a droid I'm not sure what I'd use an iPad for that I don't have on my phone, but there are a LOT of early education apps there that Android simply doesn't have.

I would check out this website. They are a little more manageable when it comes to price. I would go with one 32 gb and buy a year protection. It is a good site that backs its products. There are also grants available that you can look at. I would go with this case. I would try this app with him. It is a brand new app on the market. I have four kids. All of them have dropped their iPads and cracked their screens.
We bought Otterboxes and Griffin Survivors to keep the glass from falling out. Those cases completely enclose the iPad, including a clear plastic front for the screen. Works beautifully, and no more cracks from dropped iPads.
My personal preference is the Griffin Survivor. The foam rubber on it makes it nicer to grip.
