Eventually, it does help to get acquainted with ideas about musical time - beats, temp (how fast the beats go by), and more.

I often teach students who pick up the harmonica, having never engaged in musical activities. You learn new ways to understand sounds and time.

It helps to have some pointers. I write the book Harmonica For Dummies, and of course I'd appreciate it if you'd buy a copy. It covers everything you need to know from beginner to intermediate level.

Check out the early chapters especially. Holding the harmonica, getting it in your mouth, and breathing are the foundations, and it's easy to overlook the things that can make a big difference.
