One of the most reliable drives in the Backblaze reports.
HGST Touro S?
Here is the data sheet
This is what you're looking for [1TB 7200rpm portable] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00IVFDQFM/ref=mp_s_a_1_fkmr0_1?qid=1421546419&sr=8-1-fkmr0&pi=AC_SX110_SY165_QL70)
Picked up a HGST Touro S
Can confirm it loads faster than stock. Forza Horizon was faster loading and restarting races was basically instant instead of it pausing for 2 seconds.
Evolve alpha was also a lot faster. I know load times in that game were painfully bad to begin with and the devs are addressing it.
Even still, I was always the first one to load in and had to wait about 20+ seconds more until the rest of the team were in. Like I said, the gap probably won't be as wide when they fix the loading on that game, but I still think if you want shorter load times, it's def worth it to get an external drive.
The one I linked is cheaper depending on color and storage size. The silver 500gb is only $56.99 as I write this. It's the one I bought and works well.
I bought this - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IVFDQFM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Works great and is 7200 RPMs!
Buy a 1TB 7200rpm drive for around 70 bucks if the speed is that important to you. $140 for only 256GB is just a terrible money/space ratio for this generation. Here is a good one.

This is good. Don't listen to anyone else. Don't be a filthy seagate casual.
Edit: I hope people take that joke well.
There's a 7200rpm 1TB external HD on sale for $70 on Amazon.

I assume you mean this HDD? Click me!
Its a bit on the expensive side. I'd recommend the one below. Its just as fast and probably more reliable. Not to mention, $40 cheaper for the same size/capacity.

I actually own the 1T version of this for my college work and I can tell you that it is very quite. I also own a Touro external (1T) and it's at a reasonable price ($70-ish US). It's on Amazon -- http://www.amazon.com/HGST-High-Performance-Portable-Platinum-0S03694/dp/B00IVFDQFM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1464990589&sr=8-1&keywords=touro+external+hard+drive
Is this really that good of a deal, considering it's still 5400rpm? I know it's a decent amount of space but personally I'm still looking for a 7200rpm like this 1tb Touro http://amzn.com/B00IVFDQFM
Did that work for you?
Because I'm having the same issue with a Touro S hard drive: https://amzn.com/B00IVFDQFM
but no such problem with an older WD hard drive: https://amzn.com/B005HMKKH4
both are USB 3.0, work on my PC on USB 2.0 with less than 500 ma power, and formatted in NTFS.
with this TV: http://www.tclusa.com/products/home-theater/c-series/tcl-55-class-c-series-4k-uhd-hdr-roku-smart-tv-55c803
only the WD drive works.
Why would one drive work but the other wouldn't?
EDIT: tried two different USB 2.0 extension cables. One of them allowed the Touro drive to work!! but why was that an issue in the first place, and why would an extension cable fix it?
This is the one that I got.
It is easy as hell to use and runs off of the USB connection to the XB1, doesn't need any external power source.
I got it and plugged it into my XB1. It asked me if I wanted to format it, I selected yes, and a couple seconds later it was ready to go. You can also set it to your main drive after formatting so everything you download will go to it instead of your XB1 HDD.
Saw this https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IVFDQFM/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER and didn't know if there were any in the same price range. Thanks though.
I just bought this one a few day ago. 1TB, 7200 RPM. It was 70 dollars when I bought it a few days ago. 1 TB External Hard Drive.
+1, I got this and it works great, moved all my games onto it and it speeds up load times in addition to giving me more space! This is the one I bought [Link] (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IVFDQFM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) which the price bot will probably match too. One of the reviews on amazon said the included cable doesn't work with X1, but that's not true, it worked fine for me (so don't buy an extra).

Would that one work? There's an option for waiting 4-6 weeks and getting it for 70 bucks, which doesn't seem too bad.

Is snapping apps faster with an external HDD? I have a 7200 RPM drive and snapping doesn't seem that slow to me. If loading apps is really slow for you, you could try this high speed Touro drive: http://www.amazon.com/HGST-High-Performance-Portable-Platinum-0S03694/dp/B00IVFDQFM/
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00IVFDQFM/ref=pe_385040_127541850_TE_item
Assuming he meant this one. I just ordered it a few days ago.
Nope the internal is stock 5400rpm. First thing I did was plug in one of these.
People have done tests and the price to speed increase on SSDs is probably not worth it for many. If you don't need a ton of space I use this external drive and it's absolutely perfect. If you need more space I recommend something like this.
http://www.amazon.com/HGST-High-Performance-Portable-Platinum-0S03694/dp/B00IVFDQFM/ref=pd_bxgy_pc_img_y
Currently on sale but the only issue the cord that comes with it doesn't work on xb1 so you would need another usb3 cord. But other than that it work great highly redeemed.

Works flawlessly and insanely fast on the X1.

Faster write speed does show a noticeable improvement in load times for some games, notably in Fallout 4 and Skyrim (Fallout loaded about 30% faster than when it was on my internal HDD).

Specs: Touro S 1 TB 7200 RPM USB 3.0 drive

I got this a few years back specifically for the 7200 RPM and USB 3.0 powered (no need for external power.) Have about 300GB free.
This is hardly a brick and still uses only on cable and is 7200RPM
https://www.amazon.com/HGST-High-Performance-Portable-Platinum-0S03694/dp/B00IVFDQFM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1473792466&sr=8-1&keywords=touro+external+hard+drive

This would be the fastest portable non SSD you could find. There are desktop drives with larger capacities too http://www.amazon.com/HGST-High-Performance-Portable-Platinum-0S03694/dp/B00IVFDQFM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1427137844&sr=8-1&keywords=touro+2tb
