Have you tried a bagel guillotine, a bagel cutter, a bagel holder or a Bagelmate BAGLR (it looks kind of like a spaceship!)?
PS: They had to change the design of the guillotine because a lot of people put their thumb through the hole in the bagel, forgot to pull it out before they guillotined it, and ended up with a sliced-off thumb, a perfectly sliced bagel covered in blood and a trip to the ER..

If you slice bagels with any regularity at all, I highly recommend getting a Guillotine slicer. I bought one six months ago and every bagel is now sliced perfectly

Also, you should just get a bagel guillotine, they are only ~$15 and are great. Way easier/faster to cut a bagel and they always come out perfectly.

Flip the bagel sideways on cutting board or plate, pinch the top positioned part with your thumb and index finger, insert knife in space between fingers and carefully slice downwards through the bagel. Poof sliced bagel!🥯
You can always slice a bagel for him the night before to avoid any further issues.
