The first year we moved to Idaho (in fall) I thought the flies were because we’d had the doors open from moving. The second fall we moved again, so I thought it was moving. The third fall, a houseguest accidentally burnt something in the kitchen and opened all the windows to air things out...
By the fourth fall, I’d noticed a pattern, and realized fly season is a span of a couple weeks between summer and fall.
My best defense is a zapper like this one
I set it up in the problem area at night - sometimes in my garage, sometimes the kitchen, sometimes the laundry room (central location in my house), sometimes outside the front door.
It makes a pretty sharp pop sound that scares the daylights out of my dog, so I only put it out when it’s particularly bad. In between, I’ve had luck with fly tape.
