I got it for $400 on sale at BB but $500 is a decent price. Comes with 2 years of 100GB storage on Google and some paid drawing apps. Comes with pen and keyboard, essentially a surface pro running ChromeOS with Linux and Android app support. Headphone jack and SD card slot included.

I am not very experienced with chromebooks, but from my quick search i can say that this could be a good option:

You can honestly just get the cheapest chromebook. Order an old samsung chromebook on ebay for $60. I honestly like the mediatek ones the best. My niece is still using a chromebook that was $179 new in 2016. Sorry I can't access best buy with my VPN.

Id either get the first to use for fun or the cheapest. Consider the last windows alternative as it has free Microsoft office for 1 year.

My sister bought this instead of a Samsung android tablet it's honestly amazing for daily tablet use for $400 my favorite.
We also have the windows version of this that my niece uses

Devils advocate. $162 windows 10 in s mode (only Windows store downloads, almost no viruses similar to a chromebook but better tbh, can remove s mode. It has USB C for a portable HDD This is what I'd get my child because it comes with office free for a year and you get free cloud storage for you for a year.
