Assuming that most of your game consoles use HDMI input, I'd recommend buying a cheap 20-30" monitor that you can use. It might not be as good as what you had before, but at least it won't be too old and should have a decent resolution.
You might want to try looking at this one or this one.
The colors will not be your biggest worry on a calibrated TN, the viewing angles will. Sitting in the perfect position, vertical gamma shift will be visible from top to bottom. I would highly recommend a 75hz IPS for the stuff you do, I'll list a few good ones that I know of.
Dell SE2717H (very good color presets, and native 75hz)
HP Envy 24 (good color presets, and native 75hz. Beware of faint vertical lines over certain colors)
HP 25xw (good color presets, can overclock to 75hz)
HP 25er (great color presets, but can't do 75hz)
I was in a similar position as you, thinking of getting a 144hz. But instead I ended up with a 75hz IPS, and couldn't be happier.
Please check video reviews for the following monitors before purchasing them to get any idea of the actual bezel(product pictures lie) but here are a few with fairly thin bezels. There aren't really any out there with zero bezel but please keep in mind any bezel will be hard to notice during use.
AOC 27B1H
AOC 27V2H
HP 25er
VIOTEK H270

Really not sure how this compares to the previously popular 25xw or the Amazon version 25er - maybe a BestBuy exclusive model?

HP 25xw http://store.hp.com/us/en/pdp/hp-pavilion-25xw-25-inch-ips-led-backlit-monitor
It’s an hp 25f, link below

These are my specs, except my gpu is a gtx 970 with 4 gb vram. And I have 16 gigs of ram now. My price zone I'm looking at is anything below $300
Update:
I'm thinking of getting this with a dvi to vga adapter.

Do you think the change from dvi to vga is a big enough gap to bother me?
Do you happen to know anything about the HP 25er:
www.amazon.com/HP-25er-25-Backlit-Monitor/dp/B01F6V6QIM/ref=dp_ob_title_ce ?
Amazon lists it as the 'successor' to the HP 25xw.
Yeah that's true, it would be at a desk so I don't need it very big and how does this one look?

Something like this could probably work: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01F6V6QIM/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_TcoBybGP1AJCA
It has decent reviews for what you would like, but then there are some more intense monitors for those who are serious gamers and such, like this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01DHTWWTM/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_t4_api_oUgByb8FNEF5R
I believe you would need a Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter to hook up your MacBook to the monitor, but you have to use an older model adapter. I tried using an HDMI to HDMI cable for my monitor, but only the Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter worked
The BenQ uses a TN panel with dull and uneven colors, poor viewing angles and overshoot ghosting (AMA High=overdrive on) or slower pixel response times (AMA Off=overdrive off) versus similarly priced and much better looking 1080p IPS/PLS. You linked to the 27XW which is a 2015 model while the 27VX is an older panel with inferior image quality and LED PWM Dimming or Flicker which ruins motion clarity and makes some people suffer from health issues like headaches and/or eyestrain:

http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/articles/content/pulse_width_modulation.htm#side_effects
The 27XW is vastly superior compared to any 60hz TN panel, but one can buy the 2016 version, the 27er for 170$.

And the 25" version for 110$ from Best Buy. The 25" is slightly sharper.
