Oh! One thing that helps me, but that I've always felt guilty about:

I own a light board, that I use to trace things... kinda:

> I'll try to draw something exactly like the reference picture that I use

> I'll then place the original on the board

> Turn on the board and place my copy over it

> Then I can see exactly where I missed the proportions and where my lines went wonky...

> Then I correct them in a red pen(cil)

So essentially, I'm freehanding something, and then using the light board (...thing. I dunno what it actually is called) to see where I screwed up.

I can draw Rick and Morty (from Rick and Morty) in a couple of different poses, at this point, mostly from memory.

I don't know how helpful this will be for you, but, it helped me.

I'm going to get this so I can embroider whatever. Maybe get a light box or transfer paper and an adult coloring book?

It's not that hard, you get one of those hobby boxes used to hold coin collections and put LED lights under it. Then, you put a map created on a computer under it. Finally, you put your parchment paper over that and trace it with a calligraphy pen.

Some people buy actual "light boxes" but they are so easy to make yourself.

This is how I make maps for roleplaying games. I'm sure he does it too.

We recently acquired an LED light table, which is a modern alternative to a full lightbox. It's affordable, very compact, and extremely bright, even lighting. This one from Huion has served us well.

A light pad works best. They can be had for pretty cheap. This is the one I have. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00J3NRAV2/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1415550650&sr=8-1&pi=SY200_QL40
It distributes the light perfectly. I find dslr scans so much clearer and actually prefer it over a devoted scanner! Just take your time and get a system down.

That is correct. Ideally flats are taken at the end of an imaging session, so the focus and imaging train is untouched. You can use a LED board like this, depending on the size of your OTA. And add a layer or two of translucent sheet to diffuse the light evenly.

This is the one I got and it works great for tracing my sketches onto watercolor paper.

I like it because it is really thin, easy and quick to use, and doesn't take up a lot of space. You power it by plugging it into USB so you just need to make sure you have a computer or charger relatively nearby. They have it in different sizes. Hope that helps.

Also I just noticed that the different sizes have a little different configurations, it looks like the A4 has to be plugged into a wall for example so if you get a larger one it may vary a little from what I described.

> making a DIY lightbox out of LEDs

I got something like this.
