For months I’d been trying to find some kind of shelving or rack or something that I could put in my deep freezer to protect meal containers from being buried, and damaged, under the avalanche of other items, but there just wasn’t anything out there. So I came up with this PVC plumbing cage, made from ½ inch tubing and joints. The hubby threw it together this afternoon, and I’m happy to say that it’s just what I needed!

We’ve got a 15.5 sq/ft (or thereabouts) deep freezer with those annoying pre-molded shelves in the rear corners, so we had to make it fit between those and work between the blue freezer baskets as well. In my search for the non-existent shelving, I purchased a wire basket several months back that I thought might help a little if it sat in the bottom, and it helped. A little. So, for the cage, the original plan was to make all the legs sit in the basket, but as you can see, that didn’t pan out due to my not specifying inner or outer measurements initially. Now the rear right leg of the new cage sits in the basket, and the other legs are outside it. (This gave my exacting hubby some glazed-over eyes and facial tics, but I assured him it didn’t need to be precise; it’s just to protect/keep the containers unburied. =) We decided to leave it unglued and kind of mashed it down a little as it’s flexible in the joints while unglued, and it sits just fine!)

Thankfully, I did manage to specify that the lowest horizontal bar should not be any lower than 7”, because of the bottom wire basket, so there’s that… Finished outer measurements are 16” wide, 13.25” deep, and 25” high in the rear, 22.5” in the front. And at 16” wide, it just fits between the top baskets. Any higher and the baskets wouldn’t seat (as you can also see in the pics). If anyone wants to know quantities of piping, T’s and L-joints, let me know.

The containers are these bento boxes from Amazon, which have held up very well over the last 6 months or so. I’ve lost a couple of lids and one container base from cracks; for the price, a pretty good record, I think. I make a week’s worth of food for 3, 50-60lb dogs, so I’ve got between 18-21 containers in a stack at the start of the week.

Hope this helps ya’ll with big full freezers!
