You may want to google personality disorders. It sounds like your mother may have one. It won't cause you to excuse her behavior, but it might let you understand it. And understanding is a huge step along the way to forgiveness. And realize this: forgiveness isn't about her; it's about you. It's about letting go of pain so you can move on with your life.

I don't think you're under any obligation to love anyone. You either do or you don't. Coming to terms with that realization is one of the big signposts in adulthood. So many, so many, think that love is some form of slavery. It's just not.

To answer your question: you should talk to a therapist.

I'm not being dismissive. Therapy helps in so many ways; it helps you learn to process such important feelings, helps you deal with cathartic loss, which it sounds like you never have (the loss of your love/trust of your mother, which may have happened when you were very young), helps you on your path to self awareness.

Try reading It's Easier Than You Think, which is a terrific intro to Buddhism.

Listen, life is complicated. There are no rule books. But there are a lot of resources in the world which can help, if you just find them.

Wishing you peace.
