Mostly read books on the subject. Oxford's Short History of Italy series is quite good and understandable for people without a deep knowledge of Italian nationalism. You'd want the 19th century one.

There's also a book called, The Failure of Italian Nationalism. It presents a very good definition of nationalism from the perspective of a historian rather than a political scientist.
