I also want to second the suave naturals conditioner. It's cheap and effective -- I've found the coconut one (for me at least) is the best at getting out knots.
I would only comb her hair (wide tooth comb) when it is sopping wet.
I had a lot of tears with my hair as a kid and one thing that really helped was a spray called "no more tangles". I think it's mean for kids and might just be a spray conditioner (not sure). I don't know if it's Curly girl, but it was the only thing that my mom could put in my hair to get me to let her brush it.
