I would encourage you to check out a book called Just Do Something. It will help you with those very questions, from a well respected Bible teacher.
>Where is the promise that he has a plan for your life?
I know what I’m doing. I have it all planned out—plans to take care of you, not abandon you, plans to give you the future you hope for. (Jeremiah 29:11)
> ...he isn't a micromanager.
Isn't He?
It seems that God has worked out everything - from the big picture and the little details; Gods will of decree (as it's called in the book mlbontbs87 recommended): Matthew 10:29-30, Psalm 139:1, Ephesians 1:11, Acts 4:27-28, Isaiah 46:9-10
Then there's also Gods will of desire; what God desires from his creation.
Gods will of decree is how things are - Gods will of desire are the ways things ought to be. Both are found in the bible.
All this stuff is paraphrased from this book:

I haven't read it - just looked briefly at page 18-20 and gave a small summarize.
